Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.3 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 26 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by varun01 on 2/7/2024 & rated 93 points: Deep garnet. Decanted while drinking over 2 hours. Took about 30 minutes to wake up. Really wonderful minerality and elegance. No signs of the ripeness of the vintage. (474 views)
Tasted by burgcamel on 11/28/2023 & rated 91 points: Very nice wine and accessible today. For me, it lacks the complexity to merit a higher score. (607 views)
Tasted by Lanzelot on 10/28/2023 & rated 94 points: The color of the wine ist pale ruby with garnet reflexes. On the nose there are pronounced aromas of dark cherries, strawberries, balsamic notes, tobacco, smoked bacon. The acidity is high. The tannins are low and very silky. The body is medium. On the the palate the flavors are also pronounced and similar to the nose but the red fruit aromas are dominating. The finish is very long. This wine is at the beginning of its drinking window. The fruit aromas are still very present. This wine has a huge potential for aging. Straight from the bottle, the wine was rather closed. Therefore, I decanted it for 2 hours. It made a big step and opened up. A really beautiful wine. I like it. Glass I used: Zalto Burgundy (677 views)
Tasted by Pancreatitis on 9/10/2023: Fairly reticent and inexpressive initially, with several hours an intriguing nose of blood and wormwood, undergrowth with a herbal/medicinal quality. The palate is quite saline and secondary, soy, BBQ meats, Asian spice, tobacco, a sturdy, masculine Nuits, best at about the 5 hour mark. Tannin very fine but somewhat prominent oak. (763 views)
Tasted by Orange Tsian on 11/18/2022 & rated 91 points: 相比起新酒,经过陈年,香气中的黑樱桃、黑莓之类的果味舒展和通透不少,不会结成一团,中后段出现些许粉尘、旧皮革和一点干花香。口感中单宁较多,但是舒展,带着细粉质叠在一起,口感中的果味集中度不错,黑果为主,带着些许干花,后段有些许香料粉、泥土和黝黑的矿物感,余韵中长。91/100 (1540 views)
Tasted by Pinot_Geek on 11/14/2021 & rated 93 points: After 45 minutes airtime-has that NSG tannic snap I like, tamed a bit by time to balance dark berry fruit and earth. Somehow delicate and powerful like a ballet dancer on pirouette this is very good and has years to go. (2142 views)
Tasted by Pancreatitis on 9/13/2021: Dark ruby.
Initially reticent nose develops with time into a melange of red fruits, citrus, florals, dark earth, minerals.
Closed initially, with an hour of air such a beautiful, feminine, weightless palate of raspberries, violets, black cardamom spice, anise, hoisin and beef stock. (2019 views)
Tasted by Roland67 on 2/27/2021 & rated 93 points: Very consistent with my notes from last time I had this (5 month ago) but this time maybe even more expressive. The nose is almost hypnotic right from PnP. On the palate the acidity still has a firm grip but leads the fruit complexity nicely toward a long finish. Love this wine. I´ve never had a disappointment from L´Arlot. 93-94+ P (2317 views)
Tasted by SussexSB on 1/20/2021 & rated 92 points: Just sneaked into 92 as it has just entered a window. PnP into large red Burg Zalto glass. Crimson, sharp glistening, beautiful hues of summer fruit. No sous bois. This is get up and go. It may develop +1/2 points but it really is all there now. Crack on and enjoy. It is most certainly not a (70 typo previous score - a shame (unless you’re buying) as it brings the punter scores down) poor performer. Crack on. Superdoops. (2381 views)
Tasted by Roland67 on 9/7/2020 & rated 92 points: Amazing complexity in the nose (almost right from PnP), stony minerality, gunpowder, earl grey tea, gooseberry, cherrystone. On the palate a concentrated fruit with cherry and blackberries and a firm acidity grip toward the end. This tight acidity softens up after an hour, but still a good grip on the backend. Very good balance. The finish is medium/long with herbal notes but in complexity not fully up to the complexity in the nose and the palate. I believe this wine will only improve next 5-8+ years, yet it Is irresistible now. Lovely wine. I very seldom find a disappointment from this Domaine. 92-93P (2291 views)
Tasted by Pancreatitis on 5/16/2020: Initially quite reticent, following a hour this opened up beautifully.
Detailed, concentrated nose, spice, complex floral perfumes, truffle, animale, dark humus earth and sois bois.
Graceful mineral palate, subtle hints of dark fruits, violets, high acidity and unobtrusive tannin. Best clearly still to come, but quite lovely now. Straddles masculine and feminine quite nicely. (1676 views)
Tasted by Jammy Wine on 5/10/2020 & rated 70 points: Domaine de l’Arlot reds historically have been very rich and rigid, needs time to bring balance to the wine. I personally preferred their recent vintages from 2015 onwards, their NSG whites are also very interesting. Tasted blind – Rich and heavy red berries, slight greenness but grippy tannins, not well integrated. 2013? Nuits Saint Georges? (70/100) (2165 views)
Tasted by Waedi on 3/18/2017 & rated 88 points: In the beginning very disappointing, then slowly improved. Will need 5+ years to get rid of wood/coal and bitter aromas. Alternatively decant at least 3+ h. Potential to get 92 points. (3416 views)
Tasted by TheUsualSuspects on 11/4/2016 & rated 93 points: Precise Cherry and woody notes on the nose. Touch of smoke. Nice weight, cool mouthfeel, tannins present. Rich dark and cherry flavours, with a spicy/dry finish. Very appealing, polished. Will definitely come back to this in the future. (3453 views)
Tasted by Javachip on 10/15/2016 & rated 88 points: Dull ruby red color. Notes of tart red fruit, musk, animal fur, earth, some bitter herbs. (3221 views)
Tasted by VinCapitan on 4/19/2016 & rated 90 points: Cherry mushrooms mulch sweet riper fruit (3719 views)
Tasted by chatters on 9/15/2015: United Cellars Grand Cru Burgundy tasting (Harbour 220/L15 131 Macquarie Street): polished oak, cream, vanilla, caramel, over biscuit and cherry, the coffee, toast and some slightly stalky notes. More of the same on the palate, juicy, balanced, complex, lots going on , too young though, still quite puppy fat on the nose and palate, carries long with spice notes and slightly cherry stone, silky tannins. Difficult to spit. Very good. Second taste more than reinforces this. Superb in fact. (4375 views)
Tasted by Jeremy Holmes on 7/14/2015: Has quite a bit of aniseed and licorice on the nose along with dark cherries. It is plush and velvety with good volume and some floral nuance. There's structure buried beneath the flesh and the wine just flexes its minerally muscle towards the end of the palate. A very pretty Nuits. (2602 views)
Tasted by Frijole on 11/2/2014: medium plum red, lots of clarity, silvery hue
Nose: cherry, raspberry, black pepper, clove, bay leaf, wet wood, stem, tannins
Pal: raspberry, cinnamon, earth, black pepper, bay leaf, orange rind, clove, leather, touch swine, tannins
Feel: full, acidic
Finish: long

Tasted by Gargantua on 6/8/2014: Grands Jours de Bourgogne 2014 Day 2: Côte de Nuits 3-18-13: Very reductive; not yet in bottle (4215 views)
Tasted by PC73 on 5/13/2014 & rated 90 points: A very big, powerful wine.
Don't dream of approaching for 10 years (2193 views)
Tasted by peternelson on 11/17/2012 & rated 92 points: Palais de Congres: Des Grands Vins de Bourgogne (Beaune): ***Dense color, soft, ripe fruit of blackberry and blueberry; rich with a little spicy picque at the end. Great future for this. (3649 views)

Pinot Noir

Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia)
Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Jura, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Romania, Switzerland, Austria, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.

Pinot Noir is one of the world's most prestigious grapes. It is very difficult to grow and thrives well in France, especially in Champagne and Burgundy. Pinot Noir thrives less in hot areas, is picky on soil, and deserves some oak storage.

Pinot Noir, or Blauburgunder / Spätburgunder in German, is a blue grapevine - and, as the German name suggests, the grape comes originally from Burgundy in France.

The grape, which thrives in calcareous soils, is used primarily for the production of red wine, and it is widely regarded as producing some of the best wines in the world. The wine style is often medium-bodied with high fruit acidity and soft tannins. It can be quite peculiar in fragrance and taste, and not least in structure - which may be why it is referred to as "The Grapes Ballerina".
Pinot Noir is also an important ingredient in sparkling wines, not least in champagne since it is fruity, has good acidity and contains relatively little tannins.
The grape is considered quite demanding to grow. The class itself consists of tightly packed grapes, which makes it more sensitive to rot and other diseases.

Pinot Noir changes quite easily and is genetically unstable. It buds and matures early which results in it often being well ripened. Climate is important for this type of grape. It likes best in cool climates - in warm climates the wines can be relaxed and slightly pickled.
In cooler climates, the wine can get a hint of cabbage and wet leaves, while in slightly warmer regions we often find notes of red berries (cherries, strawberries, raspberries, currants), roses and slightly green notes when the wine is young. With age, more complex aromas of forest floor, fungi and meat emerge.

In Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Hungary, it often produces light wines with less character. However, it has produced very good results in California, Oregon and New Zealand.

With its soft tannins and delicate aroma, it is excellent for white fish, chicken and light meat. For the stored wines you can serve small game. Classic duck breast is a matter of course, a Boeuf Burgundy and Pinot Noir are pure happiness.

Pinot Noir loses quality by over-harvesting.
Pinot Noir is prone to diseases, especially rot and mildew. Viruses cause major problems especially in Burgundy.
Pinot Noir are large round grapes with thin skins. Relatively high in alcohol content. Medium rich tannins and good with acid.
As a young person, Pinot Noir has a distinctly fruity character such as raspberries, cherries and strawberries.
A mature Pinot Noir, the taste is different. Cherry goes into plum and prune flavors. It smells of rotten leaves, coffee, moist forest floor and animal wine. This must be experienced.
In warm climates you find boiled plum, some rustic, little acid.
If the grapes are over-grown, the wine will be thin, with little color and flavor.

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio
