Tasted by Derek Darth Taster on 3/5/2024 & rated 98 points: Epic night at Capasso. Drank in Grassl Cru. Cork soaked 3 quarter way up, but otherwise in great condition, removed using Durand. Reasonably high ullage.
Appearance is murky, deep intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose pronounced intensity, absolutely captivating with intoxicating scents of smoky meat, sexy ripe brown stemmy spices, black cherries, dark red cherries, incense, hawthorn. Developed.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium alcohol, medium tannins, medium+ body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of smoky incense, lovely ripe brown stems, black cherries, dark red cherries, hawthorn. Very long elegant yet spicy finish.
Top notch wine. A nose to die for. Palate constantly begging you for another sip to draw out all its elements. Just a Clos Vougeot (some very much more special than others) and not even a hallowed Musigny, but I do get a feel of some "iron fist in a velvet glove" here. Simply fantastic. Just when I was in a bit of a funk struggling to discover more special wines (not necessarily expensive ones) to feel excited about, along comes my first experience of Domaine Leroy to steamroll all that and bring the mojo back!
Absolutely worth it to open my Rousseau Chambertin 07 as tribute, to have a taste of this. (481 views)
Tasted by hprphf on 10/7/2023 & rated 94 points: Off-Track Leroy BYO (Manhatta): 3351/7752, next to and arguably so different from the 97 Pommard. Much cleaner, red and dark fruit, spice, lightly medicinal, pure, lifted, great power. 94 (929 views)
Tasted by Vini Ciclismo on 8/5/2023 & rated 98 points: 1996 Rhone and Burgundy (Bronte): pure red with a faded rim
essence of cherries, damson, refined spice, lifted floral perfume
a simply beautiful wine. Elegant and refined yet also with flavour intensity, fruit and a gentle dark spice define it, there is great length and a long peacocks tail of a finish with silky but persistent tannins. seems ageless, and hard to fault in any way. (815 views)
Tasted by fcxj on 7/9/2021 & rated 92 points: Floral aromatics, but bit muddied on palate. Good not great Leroy. (2232 views)
Tasted by vetty on 7/5/2021 & rated 93 points: We gave it too much aeration, the acidity, tannin, intensity and structure were still there. But flavor became monotonous。 Served as blind, I even guess it's a Leroy Maison new release mature vintage. It's too matured as a 1996. Don't think it has upside for further aging. (1746 views)
Tasted by Sonoma Duck on 7/5/2020 & rated 94 points: Musty cork but an Ah-So did the extraction. Cork fully soaked. Light red color but no browning. Nice nose that opened up right away. The wine was in fine shape. Tannins appear to be fully resolved. Excellent with a long finish. Not as good as a special bottle five years ago but fine and the last one of three so bye bye. By the way for my taste, this was fully mature and I would drink up. (2278 views)
Tasted by marcellonegro on 12/18/2019 & rated 97 points: Medium garnet. Predominantly primary fruit on the nose, but more cooked and dried. Strawberry and black fruit, plum on nose. Some hints of forest floor, woody, stems and wood spice. Moderate acidity, still quite well structured for the age. More red fruit on palate with dried floral notes, spices and hint of leather. Still firm tannins, especially for age. Amazing length and complexity. Elegant. (1850 views)
Tasted by Vini Ciclismo on 12/17/2019 & rated 96 points: Rusty colour, soft rim.
Earthy, underbrush,
Red and black berries, cherries and damsons. Lots of fine tannins, good acidity. Still mainly fruit but with nice background spice and gentle earth.
Still has a decade in it. (2257 views)
Tasted by dcwino on 6/21/2019 & rated 95 points: 1996 Burgundy Retrospective - The Third Session (Clarity - Vienna, Virginia): Beautifully mature expressive nose displaying ripe slightly dry red fruit, cherry, strawberry jam, dry cherry, sous bois, grilled cep, roasted coffee bean, stem, sap, cinnamon and limestone mineral. Fully integrated palate, nicely layered concentrated red fruit, unctuous and rich, bright acidity, good mineral presence, a hint of fine tannins and a long sweet red fruit driven finish with a hint of roasted coffee bean and sous bois at the end. Drinking beautifully. (2784 views)
Tasted by Xavier Auerbach on 3/24/2019 & rated 93 points: Winefields Pre-Sale Tasting and Lunch (Wijnkasteel Genoels-Elderen, Riemst, Belgium): From the Wijnmakelaarsunie Museum Collection. Fully mature colour, almost no red left; complete, mature and warm nose, glowing, vinous and slightly nutty, opens up to macerated red berries; masculine, firm and spicy palate, fresh and lively, quite tannic, vestiges of fresh fruit; excellent length. (2212 views)
Tasted by fcxj on 12/21/2018 & rated 94 points: Leroy night. Floral, classic nose. Very integrated and nice sweetness. Right in the drinking window. (3930/7752) (1824 views)
Tasted by DAN BAILEY on 7/18/2017: Richer, smoother and deeper than the 95 served alongside. Really classy, elegant and persistent. Plenty of focus but no unbalanced 96 acidity here. Clear WOTN for me and most others present. (2883 views)
Tasted by johnh1001 on 9/28/2016: This was much more restrained than the last bottle (3311 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 9/24/2015: La Paulée Meets Chicago - Dinner (Blackbird - Chicago IL): Late night, brief note. Floral and spice start with red fruit. moderate weight and intensity. Not quite a much fun as the 1998 opened even later in the evening. (4692 views)
Tasted by johnh1001 on 6/27/2015: This was excellent to start, but got crazy tannic after 4 hours. I hadn't left the prior bottles go that long. (3885 views)
Tasted by johnh1001 on 6/10/2015 & rated 95 points: Another outstanding bottle. Dark fruit, meaty notes and beautiful spice on the nose. This carried through to the palate. A very forward 1996 (3858 views)
Tasted by Sonoma Duck on 2/27/2015 & rated 96 points: Decanted for 45 minutes. Medium ruby, nice floral nose, mouth coating fruit, very elegant with a long, long finish. Prime time and at least another five years at this level. (2811 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 8/5/2014 & rated 92 points: Birthday Celebration (Paris Club - Chicago IL): Open and decanted approximately 30 minutes before serving, which really helped. Floral, nicely perfumed start with great spice. Alluring start with red berry and forest floor hints. Also exciting flavors, just slightly more exciting and enticing start vs middle and finish. Like other times I've had this wine, it doesn't quite show the power and structure of the best 1996s, but is very accessible and enjoyable today. Others liked this more than I did tonight. (3701 views)
Tasted by Pacalet on 8/3/2014 & rated 93 points: At a great place to drink now, the usual Leroy red flowers, ripe dark red fruit with spices and damp earth. Medium plus palate with great balance and energy. A very well made 96, not so lean like many others. (2520 views)
Tasted by JonnyG on 4/17/2014 & rated 95 points: Doing Well by Doing Good: A Private Dinner for a Wonderful Cause (A Private Home in Bel Air): In a beautiful place, youthful but balanced. Spiced cherry on the nose, and maybe some forest floor notes. Concentrated layers of ripe, dark berries on the palate, and well-integrated oak. Firm grippiness on the lengthy finish. (3314 views)
Tasted by johnh1001 on 9/23/2013 & rated 96 points: Another outstanding bottle. Love the completeness, energy and the spice. (3019 views)
Tasted by KenK on 8/30/2013 & rated 93 points: Sun Wah: Great showing and one of the best wines of the night. Dark rich brooding black and red cherry fruit with nice earthy quality. Good density and verve. Still seems somewhat young, but so enjoyable. Nutmeg, cinnamon, and allspice add complexity. (2962 views)
Tasted by johnh1001 on 7/23/2013 & rated 94 points: Dinner at Cory's. Drank over 6 hours. Bold nose of dark fruit, lots of spice, meat, red fruit and minerals. Vibrant, young and fresh on the palate. Became sweeter and creamier with more time in the glass. Outstanding, not quite as bold as usual from Leroy, but in keeping with the vintage this needs more time. Long finish with great grip. Excellent. (2452 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 6/6/2013: Leroy Dinner (Grace - Chicago IL): Lots of black fruit, moderate spice, seemingly restrained for right now. Energy and concentration really show through on finish. (3542 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 3/9/2013: La Paulée de New York Gala Dinner (New York, NY): Brief Paulee tasting note. Reticent aromatic start, unusual for Leroy. Red and black cherry flavors, good spice, also seemingly a little backward right now, certainly slightly more sedated than I'd expect from a Leroy 1996 Grand Cru. (3561 views)

Domaine Leroy

Producer website

Domaine Leroy is a negociant/wine producer based in the Côte de Nuits region of Burgundy. It makes a range of wines from Pinot Noir that comes from some of the most iconic vineyards in the world, including Le Chambertin, Musigny, Clos de Vougeot and Romanée-Saint-Vivant, and is second only to Domaine de la Romanée-Conti in terms of price and quality. Those wines made from estate grown fruit are sold under the Domaine Leroy label.

The domaine was founded by Francois Leroy, a wine merchant based in Auxey-Duresses, in 1868. It was expanded under his son Joseph and grandson Henri throughout the early 1900s, and in 1942, Henri Leroy was involved with the purchase of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti alongside Edmond Gaudin de Villaine. Leroy and Villaine saw massive potential in the plots and vines DRC already held and, rather than see the domaine split up among various proprietors, decided to buy it together.

In 1974, Henri's daughter Lalou Leroy took over this co-management of DRC alongside Aubert de Villaine; she had also inherited Maison Leroy from her father after his death in 1980. Leroy left Domaine de la Romanée-Conti in 1991 following a dispute with Villaine, and began to focus on her own domaine.

Domaine Leroy was expanded in 1988 with the purchase of estates in Vosne-Romanée and Gevrey-Chambertin, and with 21 hectares (52 acres) of vineyards, became a domaine. These holdings include plots in several grand cru sites in the Côte de Nuit, as well as in Corton, plots in eight premier cru vineyards, and vineyards that fall under both village and regional appellations. While most of Domaine Leroy's wines are red, there are a few white wines made from Chardonnay and Aligoté as well.

Lalou Bize-Leroy also owns and directs Domaine d'Auvenay.

Pinot Noir

Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia)
Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Jura, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Romania, Switzerland, Austria, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.

Pinot Noir is one of the world's most prestigious grapes. It is very difficult to grow and thrives well in France, especially in Champagne and Burgundy. Pinot Noir thrives less in hot areas, is picky on soil, and deserves some oak storage.

Pinot Noir, or Blauburgunder / Spätburgunder in German, is a blue grapevine - and, as the German name suggests, the grape comes originally from Burgundy in France.

The grape, which thrives in calcareous soils, is used primarily for the production of red wine, and it is widely regarded as producing some of the best wines in the world. The wine style is often medium-bodied with high fruit acidity and soft tannins. It can be quite peculiar in fragrance and taste, and not least in structure - which may be why it is referred to as "The Grapes Ballerina".
Pinot Noir is also an important ingredient in sparkling wines, not least in champagne since it is fruity, has good acidity and contains relatively little tannins.
The grape is considered quite demanding to grow. The class itself consists of tightly packed grapes, which makes it more sensitive to rot and other diseases.

Pinot Noir changes quite easily and is genetically unstable. It buds and matures early which results in it often being well ripened. Climate is important for this type of grape. It likes best in cool climates - in warm climates the wines can be relaxed and slightly pickled.
In cooler climates, the wine can get a hint of cabbage and wet leaves, while in slightly warmer regions we often find notes of red berries (cherries, strawberries, raspberries, currants), roses and slightly green notes when the wine is young. With age, more complex aromas of forest floor, fungi and meat emerge.

In Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Hungary, it often produces light wines with less character. However, it has produced very good results in California, Oregon and New Zealand.

With its soft tannins and delicate aroma, it is excellent for white fish, chicken and light meat. For the stored wines you can serve small game. Classic duck breast is a matter of course, a Boeuf Burgundy and Pinot Noir are pure happiness.

Pinot Noir loses quality by over-harvesting.
Pinot Noir is prone to diseases, especially rot and mildew. Viruses cause major problems especially in Burgundy.
Pinot Noir are large round grapes with thin skins. Relatively high in alcohol content. Medium rich tannins and good with acid.
As a young person, Pinot Noir has a distinctly fruity character such as raspberries, cherries and strawberries.
A mature Pinot Noir, the taste is different. Cherry goes into plum and prune flavors. It smells of rotten leaves, coffee, moist forest floor and animal wine. This must be experienced.
In warm climates you find boiled plum, some rustic, little acid.
If the grapes are over-grown, the wine will be thin, with little color and flavor.

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio
