Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.4 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 54 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by redz on 2/24/2023 & rated 92 points: upgraded from last magnum, giving it a few hours decant this time. Still young. (406 views)
Tasted by sswine on 12/27/2022 & rated 85 points: Fills the senses with dark fruits and darker leaves. Opened the bottle on Christmas Day and decanted for 2 hours. Fruits filled the vessel. On tasting it was sweet, intense and lasting. Fabulous - just as I hoped. Went perfect with our Crown Roast of lamb! (428 views)
Tasted by redz on 6/18/2022 & rated 91 points: Still tight from magnum, needed a few hrs decant. Great, rich nose. (569 views)
Tasted by Hover low 64 on 11/7/2021 & rated 89 points: A reasonably good cab that we drank on my 57th birthday. Didn’t deliver the epic experience I hoped for from a wine from a strong vintage and a high price. Fairly mild tannins and a short finish atop a flavor profile of currant, black cherry, oak and vanilla. Nothing complex here - flavors lacked depth or interest. Drank over two nights and the wine showed no improvement. (919 views)
Tasted by ZVigneto on 7/17/2021 & rated 91 points: Consumed at 11 years old. The wine showed beautiful bottle bouquet. The fruit was still present but not a dominant aspect of the wine. The tannins have softened dramatically and were very fine and in balance. Drink now. (997 views)
Tasted by wconnolly on 12/18/2020 & rated 90 points: Almost exactly a year since I last tasted this and it was significantly improved this evening. I do not know whether the previous bottle was in a resting stage or whether bottle variation was the cause. Tonight's bottle was full of black cherry, raspberry, coffee and eucalyptus. Still silky tannins provided backbone. Full bodied with a lingering finish. (842 views)
Tasted by sswine on 11/26/2020: This one was not great - previous bottle was a solid 93 pts. So much so I bought another one, but in this case it seemed a little off. brown tinges on the swirl and chewy in the taste. like the tannins didnt do as they were told. Will go back to RC on this one and look for a replacement. No score given as I hope this is a one off. (780 views)
Tasted by MichielV on 4/26/2020 & rated 91 points: W COVID take out from Petit Bistro: venison chop. The meat cut was bad but the little bit of meat that ws on it tasted really well. Good combo with the wine. Dark red color but clearly could see it has some age. On nose a very elegant mix of fruit an spice. Palate a medium bodied wine that actually has some bordeaux qualities; still very fresh. Good length. I hope I wont touch the next bottle until 2025 at least. Yummy wine. (819 views)
Tasted by wconnolly on 12/14/2019 & rated 88 points: Think I must have caught this in a “resting phase”. Let this breathe for about 90 minutes. At first taste, this was a bit muddled. Some bright red fruit on the front palate but not as bold or layered as my last experience. At the three hour mark it began to reveal some mossy, herbal notes but still missing the richness of the bottle 2 years ago. Fortunately I have another bottle. (916 views)
Tasted by Mapleglo330 on 10/21/2019 & rated 92 points: This is in a great place for drinking. 1/2 hour decant and ready to go, raspberry, cocoa, vanilla. Smooth tannins. Could keep or hold. (970 views)
Tasted by MarkMich on 11/4/2018 & rated 92 points: Eight years old and still needs a little air. Really good wine. First time having the Mt Veeder. I would buy again. (1316 views)
Tasted by D3S on 7/17/2018 & rated 92 points: Nice nose, bright red and blue fruit, tobacco, eucalyptus, spice and medium finish. Drinking well now. (1106 views)
Tasted by madalyn on 5/25/2017 & rated 91 points: I like it but there is a lot of sediment at this point. my recommendation is drink up:) (2187 views)
Tasted by wconnolly on 4/20/2017 & rated 90 points: This was a spectacular surprise. I buy all the Craig Cabs and the Veeder has typically been my least favorite as it has been lighter and brighter than the more brooding Howell Mtn and Spring Mtn offerings. This 2010 however is big and bold. Yes it does have red fruit predominant on the palate but there are additional savory layers of coffee, tobacco box and a hint of eucalyptus. This is complex, layered an interesting. A real treat given I thought I was pulling out a bottle of Affinity. (1750 views)
Tasted by Trolson on 9/22/2016 & rated 93 points: Wow. What a graceful bottle of wine: body, nose and lingering taste. Great now and has time to age. (2157 views)
Tasted by theoz on 4/22/2016 & rated 93 points: On an early pour this had pretty biting tannins. After 2-3 hours decant it mellowed out and was great. On night 2 it was even better. Big black licorice upfront, with saddle leather and cedar box. (2256 views)
Tasted by MichielV on 3/7/2016 & rated 89 points: W flanksteak. This bottle was not speaking to us. It appeared well structured but lacks oomph. Had an hour decant. Later in the evening it was a bit more talkative. Is this closed at 6 yrs? (2127 views)
Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 1/14/2016: Just opened, some of that green dessitcated menthoal fruit thing going on.

From the Robin Williams property sight. '16 is a huge question mark if the new owners will sell the fruit to do this thing. (1540 views)
Tasted by Kent Cooper on 11/1/2015 & rated 88 points: Good but not great. Not worth the price. Drinks like a $30 bottle. (1507 views)
Tasted by Geaux Tigers on 10/11/2015 & rated 91 points: Decanted for 5 hours. This was a good wine, just not my preference. Heavy on the licorice and some red fruit on the palate, nose was similar. (1464 views)
Tasted by flydcjets on 5/29/2015 & rated 91 points: I opened this and let it air for about 30 minutes, and than decanted in my glass. The aroma was of dark chocolate and the dark fruit on the palate was incredible. Truly will be wonderful in a couple of years, but wanted to taste.
Cheers! (1605 views)
Tasted by Big Joe on 12/20/2014 & rated 91 points: Love the dark fruit appearance. Clearly not fruit forward but layered and complex. This is going to be good! (1680 views)
Tasted by kingboo on 10/20/2014 & rated 90 points: Very good, not great. Not a good qpr. (1647 views)
Tasted by bestdamncab on 9/21/2013 & rated 94 points: Mt. Veeder Tasting. Lovely red cherry fruit with hints of mocha, cassis, and spices on the nose, more of the same on the palate, big body, medium/long finish, demands cellar time at least three years. (2838 views)
Tasted by theoz on 6/16/2013 & rated 94 points: Excellent! What more can you ask for? (2631 views)

2010 Robert Craig Cabernet Sauvignon Mt. Veeder

94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
