Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.6 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 97 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Saxman1984 on 11/23/2023: Drank during Thanksgiving dinner. A beautiful wine exhibiting green apple notes on the nose, a lemon, apple, and mineral palate, with a minty lingering finish. I have one bottle left, a magnum. I recommend enjoying soon. (388 views)
Tasted by coremill on 4/7/2023: Magnum, cork with signs of seepage even though purchased on release. At first extremely affected by the poor cork, but breathes up to show impressive intensity and power for a Muscadet, although a little short and clipped from the oxidation. Pristine bottles should be excellent. (873 views)
Tasted by maxima on 3/4/2023 & rated 90 points: Muscadet de haute couture.
Hyper complexe et ample.
C'est hyper franc et bien accéré.
Sur le zeste, les citrons verts, le silex
et les herbes.
Super long en finale, laisse le palet bien net.
On en redemande.
EXCELLENT! (1278 views)
Tasted by Seth Rosenberg on 9/15/2022 & rated 89 points: Tasted double blind from a small capped bottle. Bell pepper, green peas, pepper, smokey, flinty, a bit of green apple. Very tight, tart green apple and tart lemon, salty minerals - long very focused tart green apple finish. I first guessed Chardonnay and would have guessed Gruner later but I knew it was French so that would have been unlikely. The weakest of the 3 (05, 07,10) IMO. Nose - 4.5/6, Palate - 4.5/6, Finish - 4.5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 14.5/20. (1452 views)
Tasted by winchester-xi on 7/5/2022: Outstanding. Lemon-lime sweet tarts and pulverized stone. Can easily go longer. (1393 views)
Tasted by ubercuvee on 2/14/2021: Really developing well. The palate is starting to round out a little but there's still great freshness, minerality and precision. I had the common sense to buy a 144bt pallet of this out of a merchant bankruptcy, but I’ve given a lot of it away as affordable white wine. Oups. This is a classic and a ludicrous bargain (2170 views)
Tasted by slanum on 2/9/2021: Ten+ year old Muscadet that has barely reached adolescence. No way I expected that. Some bottles appear to age faster than others, OK; this one's in close to the same condition it was upon release, but any difference is to the upside. I hope M. Ollivier is enjoying his retirement because he left behind an extraordinary legacy. If only white Burgundy was as reliable . . . . (1989 views)
Tasted by tbriggs on 11/22/2020: Creamy after a little time open, lemon curt, medium plus acid (1879 views)
Tasted by Tim Heaton on 10/5/2020: Ten years on, and a full six years since last tasted. A bright, lemon/hay yellow, with aromas of fresh oysters, sea spray, soil and lemony/citrus fruit notes. The palate is very fresh, light>medium bodied, with lots of energy, and structure. In a really nice place now (showed better on day 2, btw), this should continue to develop and drink well for the next 8-10 years. 13,0% abv., natural cork. Fill in vg condition; superb value. highly recommended+ (2859 views)
Tasted by Seth Rosenberg on 9/25/2020 & rated 90 points: Tasted double blind. Really austere - pulverized stone - quartz, wicked. laser like and brutally sharp - not much fruit but good. Probably a 15/20. (2316 views)
Tasted by dbkitc on 9/19/2020 & rated 91 points: Wonderful stuff. Color has deepened to straw. Saline / mineral / mild honey. Crisp, light bodied and refreshing. What I really like is the depth. There a lot going on but not showy at all. Drink up. (91) (1453 views)
Tasted by LW31 on 4/26/2020: The most striking nose of oysters and the sea. So intense and delicious. Great now but still bracing acidity and good structure here so this will go for another decade. (2061 views)
Tasted by rtewh on 4/12/2020 & rated 87 points: Maybe an off bottle but I found this astringent. Nice minerality lurking but overall not as good as I hoped. (1779 views)
Tasted by Madface35 on 4/1/2020 & rated 93 points: Could easily guess this was 3 years old tasting it blind. Fresh, bright character with nice stone and salty qualities. Perfect lunch white. Drank over 3 DAYS with no sign of fading. Very impressive. Seeking out more vintages. (1794 views)
Tasted by slanum on 12/21/2019: So impressive, seems more like nine months old as opposed to nine years. Bright, clean, fresh -- a welcome accompaniment to the first Dungeness crab of the season. This was a hit. (2070 views)
Tasted by BillBell73 on 11/29/2019: Excellent muscadet, still bright and steely and primary. (2161 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 11/22/2019: Light to medium yellow. Complex herb and citrus scents. Marvelous feel and depth for Muscadet. Rather mellow, composed, and long. The acidity is not that high but more than adequate to allow it to continue aging. Very enjoyable.

Two days later, just as lively but leaner, more lemony and stony. Defies expectations. (2250 views)
Tasted by ccn on 7/12/2019 & rated 89 points: Lovely concentration and length, good apero wine. (2279 views)
Tasted by dbkitc on 12/26/2018 flawed bottle: Unfortunately, corked. A real shame as there is some lovely fruit and minerality in the background. (2454 views)
Tasted by Lombardi on 9/11/2018 & rated 91 points: Gorgeous and starting to drink really well. (2724 views)
Tasted by wayfarer on 8/4/2018 & rated 91 points: Three years since last bottle. Very good. Tertiary flavor of light nuttiness complements fine aged lemon, mineral, floral qualities. Quite long finish, with a consistently clean and balanced palate, lovely nose. Acidity and minerality are less upfront. When first opened had a bit of old sherry note that blew off into the rich flavor profile described. Served with grilled marinated tuna, pasta, herb puree and greens. Perfect with the food. Interesting to have this with more age. (2429 views)
Tasted by Saxman1984 on 12/15/2017: A beautiful muscadet enjoyed with a dozen oysters. The age of this wine has contributed additional complexity adding a honeyed, white fruit character to the lovely salinity and beautifully balanced acidity. A wine you could drink today, but will surely become more interesting with time. (3482 views)
Tasted by dbkitc on 8/5/2017 & rated 91 points: terrific stuff. (3747 views)
Tasted by dbkitc on 6/15/2017 & rated 91 points: Clear color. Salty sea nose. Bright minerality and some light honeyed fruit depth. Great way to start the evening. (91) (3878 views)
Tasted by cubswinws on 2/18/2017 & rated 92 points: Lovely wine, really just now hitting its drinking window. Crisp and light and lots of verve and minerals. (3905 views)

Melon de Bourgogne

Melon de Bourgogne or Melon is a variety of white grape grown primarily in the Loire Valley region of France. It is also grown in North America. It is best known through its use in the white wine Muscadet.

In the U.S., Federal law prevents "Muscadet" from being used for American-produced wine; only the full name of the grape, or the shortened "Melon" can be used.

Muscadet de Sèvre-et-Maine

Muscadet (mus-ka-DAY) is a region in the western part of the Loire valley, near the city of Nantes. White wines from Muscadet are made from the Melon de Bourgogne grape. They tend to be light in color and body, and are intensely mineral driven. They are thought to be a perfect complement to raw oysters from the nearby coast. Muscadets are gleefully paired, though, with any fresh shellfish or other seafood.

There are a couple of appellations in Muscadet, the best of which is considered to be Muscadet de Sevre et Maine. And the best bottles from that appellation are aged sur-lie, or on the lees, the musty mix of yeasts and other post-fermentation solids. This aging provides flavor complexity that can be missing in other bottles.
