Tasted by MC2 Wines on 4/24/2014: This was a really lovely surprise. Very good wine and excellent for the price point. Has some nice rich fruit (lots of plum coming through) but a great balancing earthiness that keeps it together. Maybe some mocha and cinnamon contributing as well. A WineBerserkers purchase and wish we'd gotten more. (2453 views)
Tasted by Michael Davidson on 3/11/2014: Frank's note below really nails it for me. This is a ripe, full-bodied syrah. The focus here is on dark berry flavors. It's definitely not over-the-top, though. A lick of acidity at the end keeps it interesting. There's some meatiness on the nose, but overall this stays away from the savory side of syrah. This definitely fit my mood, and I enjoyed it quite a bit. (2016 views)
Tasted by Frank Murray III on 3/3/2014: Not quite a year since the last bottle but it's getting close. I decided I wanted a syrah tonight to go with some chicken sausage. A heartier, dark red. This fit well. Has aromatics of white flower, syrah funk, some riper tones. Pours dark, almost black. Delicous blackberry, cresosote, some garrigue and sweet leather. Inky in tone. There is some acid on this wine, laying in the finish. Will look to see if air adds some grip to the total as I will enjoy this over 3 nights. I suspect it will stay as is, be a good near-term drinker.....with a day of slow-ox, I've got the feel for this syrah now. This is about the fruit--plush, good density, dark, delicious. Brimming with complexity? Well, no. Mineral? No. Fruit, texture, a bit hedonistic and berry centric, yes. And in that respect, I enjoy the wine. Some nights it's a Wind Gap or Copain, some nights it's a wine like this: all syrah, just different expressions. In the end, what this resembles are the dark, fruit driven Carlisle Russian River syrahs that I also enjoy so much. Drink window? I'd say now, as it really does well out of the chute, and with some of the light acidity, it can go for another few years, through 2016. (2292 views)
Tasted by BobMilton on 2/10/2014 & rated 93 points: Very dark color, full mouthfeel. Good fruit, though not overbearing, with notes of leather and spice. May integrate a bit more with age, but drinking very well right now. (2074 views)
Tasted by isaacjamesbaker on 10/26/2013 & rated 91 points: Siduri & Novy Tasting (Santa Rosa, CA): Looks like squid ink. Dark and brooding on the nose, with blueberries, charcoal and pepper. Inky and full on the palate, the black fruit tastes pure and delicious. I dig the smoke and pepper (whole lotta pepper), and the notes of bacon fat and granite. This is really beautiful stuff that I'd love to taste again in a year from now. (2682 views)
Tasted by leadpencil on 6/11/2013 & rated 94 points: Full bodied. Blackberry, black pepper, bacon. Excellent value. (728 views)
Tasted by Russ P on 6/2/2013 & rated 92 points: Just fabulous juice right from the open, I think my fav syrah from Novy and Adam makes some great ones (658 views)
Tasted by Frank Murray III on 5/29/2013: 2011 Novy SLH Syrahs--A Test Drive Through The Big 5; 5/15/2013-6/8/2013: This follows the 2011 SLH syrah blend I finished over the last few nights. As I work through the entire SLH syrah lineup for 2011, I settled on the Sierra Mar next. This drinks more open textured right out of the chute as opposed to the SLH I did a few nights ago. While that wine came together nicely on Day 2, this one shows better without really much air. Aromatic of metal shavings. Pours darker, has a plusher texture than that wine and is more sexy in tone, too. Similar tar note to the SLH but more black fruit here, this is all about the texture, a 'look at me' syrah. Citrus note in the palate, black licorice (which stays with the wine into the last glass on the 4th day), charcoal and an opulent but balanced dark-toned finish. Structure wise, oddly enough, the 2011 SLH has better structure and this is akin more to short-term pleasure. As with the SLH bottle, I'll do this over 2-3 nights and add notes along the way but in terms of sensory attraction, this shines more flashy than the SLH blend cuvee....so for night 2, I really notice the color today--it stains the side of the glass, reminding me of the 2007 Carlisle RRV syrah that was that same pitch black stainer. Overall, this is terrific. As I commented yesterday, this is plush, fruit driven, although I will say that I get some whole cluster in the aromatic tonight, and in the palate, which comes through as some black olive that I missed yesterday, adding some contrast to the dark-edged fruit. Overall, I see this like the 2010, as a near term drinker: front end intensity, color, plushness and tarry, inky profile with dark fruit that is very compelling. I really enjoy the way this shows and like the 2010 last year, I will buy 3-4 of these to keep for the near team drinking. FWIW--this wine held up just fine into the 4th day and showed no fade. Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
