Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.5 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 99 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Michigan Mostberg on 6/19/2021 & rated 90 points: An excellent zinfandel eventually morphs into very nice mid-weight, middle-aged cabernet. Dark plum and black raspberry with nice grip and a long, slightly drying finish. All said, a delicious wine. (657 views)
Tasted by psundberg on 5/5/2019 & rated 90 points: Regrettably a disappointment with very muted dark red fruit, an abundance or licorice and non-existent finish. Hoping it was just a bad bottle, or perhaps the suspect '11 vintage, since Home Ranch is normally stellar. Bummed....
UPDATED New Years Eve 2020: I take back what I said! This was a very nice, well structured Zin and what we expect from Home Ranch. Consistent bing cherry with licorice notes, well managed acidity and a pleasant, but not lengthy, white pepper finish. (1318 views)
Tasted by Polindz on 1/27/2019 & rated 90 points: Full and fruity. A dark rich zin. A delightful way to end the weekend. (1321 views)
Tasted by dalemosier on 12/16/2018 & rated 93 points: I again rate this wine much higher than the average. It has an excellent balance of fruit tannin and taste. The taste lingers nicely. Did a side by side with Seghesio Old Vine 2011. Gave the Home Ranch higher marks. I think this would very good for several years. Unfortunately this was my last 2011 - will compare to 2012 next. (1334 views)
Tasted by pgm on 10/15/2018 & rated 91 points: Seemed to show the slightest bit of browning, but it doesn’t taste old, it’s probably at peak. Mature notes of piney leafy forest floor, but the cherry aromas are bright and powerful. Nice licorice and cigar box spices on the finish. Excellent for the vintage. (1676 views)
Tasted by e-r.portzline on 10/30/2017 flawed bottle: Musty with sunken cork. (2342 views)
Tasted by dalemosier on 7/20/2017 & rated 93 points: Did a bottle of the 2011 Cortina in the afternoon with friends and the 2011 Home Ranch in the evening with a little Cortina for side by side. Cortina was very pleasant, good balance, but too fruity on the front end. Loved the Home Ranch less fruity, strong flavor more earth less cherry. Gave Cortina 90 and Home Ranch 93 (1953 views)
Tasted by Winiac on 6/12/2017 & rated 90 points: Spicy and delicious. At its peak. Do not keep any more. (1851 views)
Tasted by williamswhine on 4/16/2017 & rated 93 points: Dark purple hue. Blueberry nose, touch of white pepper, spice. Dark fruit, soft oak, white pepper on the palate. Full bodied, long finish. Drinking perfectly. Paired excellently with Chinese food. (1892 views)
Tasted by kcp on 4/12/2017: My last 2 bottles were corked. (1757 views)
Tasted by BradboBaggins on 3/26/2017 & rated 92 points: Rich nose of warm apple, raspberry, bramble and pie spice.

Solidly structured palate of brambles, berries and fresh berry jam. This is a great wine with years ahead. As good as zin gets. (1240 views)
Tasted by Winiac on 2/6/2017 & rated 88 points: Oaky with lack of focus, but still good' drinkable wine. (800 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 7/17/2016 & rated 90 points: 38th Annual Zinfandel Retrospective - the 2011s (R&D's): Florals and showy black fruit. Pepper, bramble and black raspberry on the palate. Good finish. (1992 views)
Tasted by Jay_R on 3/12/2016 & rated 91 points: Big bold zin, complex and smooth. Delicious!! (1554 views)
Tasted by sbove103182 on 3/9/2016 & rated 93 points: Absolutely excellent. Subtle yet delivers intense flavor. Wish I had more!! (1521 views)
Tasted by williamswhine on 11/26/2015 & rated 96 points: Absolutely loved this wine. In fact, not sure if I've had a zinfandel that was so memorable/delicious. Dark berry and spicy nose. Mature grapes, smooth, well structured/balanced, dark fruit, little spice but not too much. Drink up-- not sure how this thing can improve. BTW, Seghesio has been putting out stellar product for years-- seems like it is always on the down low. (1962 views)
Tasted by mischwine on 11/14/2015 & rated 91 points: a great drink...really enjoyed the "weight" of this wine. very smooth - decanted for 2 hours. (1629 views)
Tasted by ebert on 10/4/2015 & rated 91 points: Nice deep fruit and clean finish -- drinking great. Didn't hold up well overnight but could be a storage issue. (1397 views)
Tasted by ecola on 5/29/2015 & rated 91 points: Juicy dark fruit with subtle spice. Moderate acidity and a silky smooth mouthfeel. Drink now. (1531 views)
Tasted by Guy Des Rosiers on 2/26/2015 & rated 91 points: Beautiful, balanced and complex Zin. Blackberry and raspberry on the nose, with a cool, mineral-earthy element at work in both the nose and palate,as well as a good tannic backbone. Tasted side by side with the 2012 Old Vine, this was slightly less ripe, but overall more elegant and complex. Excellent. (1739 views)
Tasted by CJM on 2/23/2015 & rated 86 points: Clear deep garnet. Anise, clove, prune. Low acids, very low tannins. Barnyard, hay. Short balanced finish (1467 views)
Tasted by BoulderWine on 1/6/2015 & rated 91 points: Beautiful muted berry and spice nose. Gobs of fruit with a long, lingering finish. But I wouldn't sit on this much longer. (1657 views)
Tasted by Kayaklady on 11/28/2014 & rated 93 points: This wine is consistently my favorite Seghesio year after year. Had with Thanksgiving dinner and it was just lovely. Did not take too long to open and had lush, juicy fruit, well balanced acidity and tannins, long velvet finish, with a touch of earthiness and a hint of eucalyptus. (1617 views)
Tasted by wirelesswine on 11/25/2014 & rated 93 points: Very dark color and a lot on the nose as well. Great berry flavors that seem to run the gamut, as well as chocolate notes. Mouthfeel is super creamy, very good acidity and there's great length. Top notch Zin. (1376 views)
Tasted by smokeandmirrors on 10/18/2014 & rated 96 points: The best Seghesio has to offer (1402 views)

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
