Community Tasting Notes (average 94.2 pts. and median of 95 pts. in 46 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by NMIZ on 1/1/2024 & rated 95 points: Excellent cork condition. Very deep garnet. Almost Opaque, black colour with a glint. Decanted at 4.30 pm. Started drinking 2 hours later. I had a 375ml a year ago and it performed better much quicker. It was different this time. It was tight, lacking aroma and more tannic than usual. At first, I questioned the high price I paid for this well-rated first growth for the 2012 vintage in Bordeaux. It needed a lot of air and patience. It noticeably opened and became more perfumed over time, in incremental blocks of 15m. If finally became ready at the 4-hour mark. By then the wine has become very smooth, aromatic and balanced. Taste of black tea, vanilla, black fruits, cigar box, cream and liquorice. The finishing is long. A well-made full-bodied wine with good balance, length, concentration and complexity. The tannins suggest the wine can be aged for decades. Very blessed to enjoy this on the first day of 2024. We had the wine with prime Japanese A5 Kobe Wagyu, grilled prawns and a spread of cheese including camembert, truffle gouda, reypenaer V.S.O.P and aged cedar cheese. A really memorable dinner. Not the best PQR compared to other labels in Pauillac, e.g. Pichon Baron 2012 which I tried a year ago, but Mouton stood out as a better quality wine. (1603 views)
Tasted by JPF16 on 12/27/2023 & rated 95 points: 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc.
Color: Dark Ruby with some bricking on the edge, not as opaque as the Screaming Eagle... you could tell this was a Bdx (or blend) vs the pure Cab...
Nose: medium-high, this flew out of the glass and sang loud and clear "I am Bordeaux!" much more nuanced and layered with dark fruits, spices, maybe a little coffee, graphite ... not too much forest floor (I call it Bordeaux funk) kept opening up over the 2 hours... a clear distinction between this and the Screaming Eagle, both exceptional in their own way.
Palate: Precision, this is really clean and fresh. Medium dry, medium acidity and alcohol, not overwhelming and well integrated, nice fine silky tannins, does not coat the mouth like the SE did but keeps giving. Still on the younger side.
Finish: Super nice, 30 seconds... (1362 views)
Tasted by Château Merci-Beaucoup on 12/25/2023 & rated 90 points: We had it at Christmasday with a roasted duck.
It was the first bottle of a brand new case of 6.
Honestly, I was a bit disappointed. The best was the texture with silky, fully integrated tannins - really smooth high-class stuff! The nose was quite hidden, best after about 30 minutes after decanting, but not evolving after: cassis, some fruit. The palate was not overhelming either: Surely a very good wine, but neither young and fruity nor ripe and earthy. I am not able to give a more precise description - because there wasn‘t much more to describe.
A Clerc Milon 2009 a few weeks ago gave me much more pleasure.
I guess Mouton 2012 and I just met in a closed down window.
I will give it another 5 years before I will taste it again. (1258 views)
Tasted by Sean Tay on 11/3/2023 & rated 95 points: Mouton Rothschild Vertical: Youthful. Not ready for drinking yet. Medium nose intensity with notes of vanilla, violet, chocolate, coffee, cassis, toast and spices. Medium+ acidity and high tannin. Did not decant. Will improve with ageing. (2222 views)
Tasted by denisontb on 10/14/2023 & rated 95 points: Enjoyed with Yun and friends over dinner. Fantastic! (1977 views)
Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 9/30/2023: More complex, more depth, and more structure than Petit Mouton. Also not as open right now, but just opened. (1575 views)
Tasted by CobraCommander on 9/7/2023 & rated 94 points: Excellent wine and experience. Brought to a dinner at the Penthouse at Mastro's Steakhouse in Beverly Hills, CA. The sommelier on hand approved. We did a 2 hour decant. While engulfed in spirited conversation and in good cheer, actual tasting notes were not documented at the time. Nevertheless, when our 40oz Wagyu Tomahawk Chop arrived, a pleasureful whiff of the glass immediately took my focus, as I tuned out the noise around me and allowed myself to be enchanted by the deep and brooding aromas of cassis and leather. It was that profound, that I remember still. The initial taste confirmed what I smelled, while also allowing fruity notes to emerge. And then, I turned my attention back to the pleasurable company I had. Since I was not driving, I was fortunate to have 3 glasses. Cheers! (1538 views)
Tasted by Philippe_C on 6/17/2023 & rated 96 points: Beautiful nose of dark fruit, cassis, tobacco leaves and cedar box… Almost at maturity, beautiful ripe and silky tannin, Bbq meat, very delicious!! (2143 views)
Tasted by beatles on 2/9/2023 & rated 93 points: Double decanted two hours before. Why, too young of course, albeit with the vintage trademark of being quite open and sexy. The fruit is up front here, with being to obvious. Needs time to settle in and gain complexity. 93++

Tasted by Mark1npt on 8/13/2022 & rated 96 points: I had completely forgotten that we had this back at the Chateau in '17 while visiting there. Brought to the table last night by new friends D & H. Double decanted for 2 hours and boom! My notes on this are eerily similar to my last note from '17. This has the complexity and precision you would fully expect from a First Growth. The 'pedigree' is clearly evident. The same earth/black soil notes remain. The fruit is super silky. This is just now beginning its journey. Right up there with the '16 LBarton for WOTN tonight. I favor the Barton by 1 point at most and only because it seemed more together and prime time for a Napa cab drinker. This one is still evolving and probably not yet at its pinnacle. Oddly enough, I see I gave it the same score of 96 back in '17 with my thoughts being much the same back then. (4801 views)
Tasted by AGELVIS on 8/13/2022 & rated 94 points: Two hour double decant. Very very deep magenta color. Blueberry, plum, graphite, brown gravy, and subtle leather on the nose. Super smooth, dry palate, with satiny acidity. Plush tannins on the longish finish.

This was a pleasure to drink with friends who brought this over for an “expensive” wine night. It’s so well made, but not necessarily my style. Mark1NPT liked it more than I did.

Already fully integrated, although I know many will say it’s too young. I realize it’s sacrelige to say this, but if a wine is not ready to drink 10 years past vintage, it’s never going to be ready. I have a good palate and I expect fruit in a wine. This bottle is absolutely in it’s drinking window and will not get better for my palate.

OK, let me have it… ;) (4851 views)
Tasted by Psdycp on 8/9/2022 & rated 96 points: Reserved with savoury notes for the first half an hour. Elegant and balanced bouquet when it is fully opened up after an hour in the glass. Cassis, cedar, tobacco and gravel on the nose. Everything is in check, nothing is out of line. Smooth texture with layers of black stone fruits, dark chocolate, dried herbs, and leather. Medium to full-bodied structure which is polished and leathery. Seamless transition to a deep and lingering finish. Drink with an hour of gentle decanting. Will be ready for appreciation in 3-5 years. (3481 views)
Tasted by Sean Tay on 4/28/2022 & rated 96 points: Pronouced nose intensity with notes of blackcurrant, black fruits, toast, spices, pencil. Medium+ acidity and medium+ tannin. Tannin is velvety and integrated. Though a young vintage, its already drinking well without decanting. A well made wine. (3915 views)
Tasted by Cailles on 3/8/2022 & rated 96 points: Bordeaux 2012 - 10 Years On - 33 Reds: All wines tasted blind. Not decanted. A few observations: 1) 2012 is a good quality vintage without the depth/length of great vintages. Still, one of the better “off-vintages”. 2) Many but not all wines are drinking well today. They are generally open, round and fleshed out. 3) Further cellaring is advised as there are hardly any tertiary aromas yet and that extra complexity will render the wines more interesting. The wines generally have the structure and fruit to age gracefully. 4) The level of ripeness/alcohol are not a concern (09, 10, 15, 18 have more problems in that area). 5) Left bank (avg. 92.2 pts) beats right bank (91.0) (group has right bank a notch ahead). The overall group avg. score is at a good 92.1, but unsurprisingly below past retrospectives of better vintages (00, 09, 10). 6) There are highlights on both sides: my best wines today were Ausone (96 pts), Mouton (96), Cheval (95) and Margaux (95).

TN: Very expressive nose full of coffee, toasty notes, ripe dark fruit, blue fruit and minerality, so inviting, so round and complete, perfectly delinated. Wow. On the palate this is so creamy, round, sexy but still sophisticated with a potpourri of dark, blue and red fruit, coffee, toast , minerality, tobacco. Absolutely round tannins, perfectly integrated acidity, creamy texture, no weight at all and a very long and expanding finish. Slightly more masculine, of course, than the Margaux in the flight before, but nevertheless, this is exceptional. For me, the best left bank wine tonight. In its typical style, Mouton seduces already at a young age. Compared to the Latour and Lafite in the same flight, this has that extra openness, the typical sexy coffee/burnt sugar notes which lure you in. 96 pts.

Decanting: This didn’t need a lot of swirling. Good from the start.

Group rank: 2nd out of 33 reds
Group average score: 95.3

Tasted by NMIZ on 2/13/2022 & rated 96 points: 2012 Mouton. Decanted for 1 hour and enjoyed over 3 hours. medium+ body. Dark purple. Intense aroma. Very smooth and silky. Balance and complex. Great length. Awesome wine. (2775 views)
Tasted by sirpat00 on 2/7/2022 & rated 96 points: Bordeaux 2012 10 years on tasting: A 2012 Bordeaux vintage horizontal hosted by a private collector. Main observations were: 1/ Left bank beats right bank thanks to Paulliac, St Estèphe and Margaux, 2/ (over-)extraction was a frequent issue, making this a vintage where winemaking decisions and skill mattered, 3/ as such, unsurprisingly, first growths and right bank equivalents clearly outperformed the pack, 4/ highlights were Ausone (97) followed by Cheval Blanc, Mouton, Pichon Lalande (all 96), 5/ the lowlight was an over-extracted Pape Clement (88). Complete ranking and additional observations included in the tasting story.

Tasting note:
A refined and elegant wine offering aromas of roasted coffee beans, graphite and pencil shavings, black tea and some menthol. Boldly structured with a dense palate. Tannins have a lot of grip, but well balanced. Nice and juicy offering lots of drinking pleasure. (3409 views)
Tasted by Kim Gerner on 11/19/2021 & rated 93 points: 25 Old Bordeaux grand cru classe - vertical (1920->) and horizontal semi blind wine tasting dinner (Copenhagen (Private)): A semi blind tasting of 25 right and left bank Grand cru Classé wines ranging from Mouton Rothschild to Chateau Cheval Blanc. 2/3 from 1920-1990 and the rest younger.

This wine: Deep ruby color. Clearly gren pepper on the nose and palate. High tannin. (564 views)

Tasted by sung251 on 2/18/2020 & rated 91 points: relatively underwhelming given the pedigree.
Has a concentrated raw flavor that reminds me slightly of welches grape juice, slight graphite, slight herbacious notes, and black currant. The tannins are very smoothened out and have a nice seamless velvet coat.
Overall the wine was flavorful but at the same time inoffensive. I can only hope that with more time more interesting teritary flavors will appear but at this point the wine is not very interesting or characterful.
In scotch analogy reminds me more of the big name inoffensive style heavy hitters like Macallan or Blue Label rather than something more intellectual or facinating like Brora/Port Ellen. (5407 views)
Tasted by dvansteenderen on 9/15/2019 & rated 94 points: 90% Cabernet Sauvignon; 8% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc. Pretty open and semi-intense nose, structured middle pallet and medium-long finish! (5969 views)
Tasted by ckinv368 on 11/27/2018 & rated 94 points: Tasted blind along with three other wines. Tasted in a darkened room, so could not see color, or viscosity. Wine was opened at least one hour prior to tasting, but unsure whether the same was double-decanted.

This was big, rich, and absolutely delicious. Still very young, with overpowering notes of bacon, blood, green pepper, onion, and light notes of leather and earth. Black fruit as well, but the savory flavors really controlled. So big, I thought this could have been a young Hermitage. Delicious concentrated effort on this one. Hold for another 10 years at least. 94-95 points at this point. (7415 views)
Tasted by George C ATLANTA on 8/25/2018 & rated 96 points: Decanted 1 1/2 hours and then enjoyed for over an hour with steak, quite beautiful and representative of the Mouton terroir, deep garnet color and very substantial mouthfeel, long long finish, super smooth, and old world berries and seriousness. A great wine and drinking beautifully now, no tannins to speak of. Yet the fact that it breathed and we enjoyed over a 2 1/2 hour +window speaks of it's power. It kept evolving and we wished we had another bottle. Drink now and over the next 15 + years. (7108 views)
Tasted by LiteItOnFire on 7/11/2018 & rated 89 points: Trip of a lifetime- literally Bordeaux right/left and North/south Rhone: (Mouton, Cheval Blanc, Haut Brion, La Mission Haut Brion, Vieux Chateau Certan, Angelus, Pichon Baron, Smith Haut Lafitte, E.Guigal, M.Chapoutier, Château De Beaucastel, Stephane Montez, Jean Michael Stephan).

Amazing Mouton tour (museums and facilities state of the art, different than Cheval but beautiful layed out) and tasting:
First label: 2012, 2009, 2005
Clerc Milon: 2003
Chateau D’Armailhac: 2011

Anecdotal comments after the chateau tasting- 2005 & 2009 were some of the best Bordeaux wines I have ever had. Some of the best wines period. Amazing complexity, depth, fruit, mineral- has everything and so much more.

2012 unfortunately was not even in the same sphere as 2005 and 2009. Dry, herbs, not interesting and missing the great middle and ending one would expect. Not sure how much time would help move this in the right direction.

Could not emphasize enough to do a tour and tasting there if given the opportunity- homerun. (6656 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

Bordeaux Wine Guide

Vins Bordeaux (Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux)

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Médoc

Vins du Médoc (Conseil des Vins du Médoc) - Read More about the Medoc

VdB

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.

Pauillac

Read more detailed information about Pauillac Looking full onto the river from the earliest days, with an important port activity, traces of which go back to ancient times (shipment of bronze as long ago as 2000 B.C.), Pauillac's life has always been intimately linked to the history of wine. Although port activities were at the root of its prosperity, Pauillac had to wait until the eighteenth century when Bordeaux ceased to hold its privileged position to become a wine port. The town then became the natural outlet for the wine production of neighbouring cantons before reaching its zenith in a period when the vineyards were exceptionally prosperous.

The characteristic of the Pauillac terroir is its exceptional relief: the many undulating ridges make it unique morphologically speaking. Highly favourable conditions facilitate the dissection of the layer of gravel. This thin, Garonne gravel from whose very poverty springs great richness, has an extremely effective natural drainage.

With their velvet red colour with a hint of amber, the wines from the Pauillac appellation, full-bodied and rich in tannin, are vigorous. Powerful when young, their aromas of red fruits (black-currant, raspberry) or flowers (violets, roses, irises) melt with the passing of time into a bouquet which is long in the mouth.
Rich and complex, the wines of Pauillac deserve to be laid down for a little longer.

Production conditions (Decree dated November 14, 1936)

In order to have the right to the Pauillac appellation of controlled origin, red wines must:
- come from the commune of Pauillac and from precisely defined parcels in the communes of Cissac, Saint-Julien, Saint-Estèphe and Saint-Sauveur, "excluding the parcels situated on recent alluvium and sand on impermeable subsoils",
- satisfy precise production conditions : grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (178 grammes - 6.27 oz. - per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°5) base yield (45 hectolitres per hectare).
