Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 86.8 pts. and median of 87 pts. in 33 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by ewindels on 12/10/2015 & rated 80 points: Nice, reliable, juicy, chewy, typical zin. For the price, a nifty buy, would repeat. (1703 views)
Tasted by chester100 on 2/19/2015 & rated 86 points: Good but not special (2160 views)
Tasted by Gretzelda on 1/3/2015 & rated 90 points: Nice dark garnet color with berries and some oak on the nose. Medium bodied with good fruit on the palate coupled with a medium to long finish. Has what I would expect for an old vine Zin from the
Dry Creek Valley. Tannins and dry body would make it good for medium to robust entrees or for the aged cheese course. For the price (Less than $13) I would consider it VERY GOOD value. Definitely would consider for repurchase. (2351 views)
Tasted by chester100 on 1/1/2015 & rated 84 points: Nothing special, lacks fruit and character (2189 views)
Tasted by chester100 on 11/8/2014 & rated 90 points: Good fruit forward Zin. Jammy and rich flavor. (2690 views)
Tasted by dsamuel on 4/7/2014 & rated 87 points: Pale garnet color, transparent and thin in appearance. Not much aromatics, mild jammy nose. Thin mouthfeel with mild silky tannins and short finish. Good enough for quaffing but not much here. Even at this price, I think there is much more out there. (2258 views)
Tasted by ewindels on 1/5/2014 & rated 70 points: Not bad, but ordinary, a littly jammy, plain, watery outer notes. Good reminder to avoid impulse purchasing from WTSO. (2364 views)
Tasted by jpleedy on 12/5/2013 & rated 85 points: This bottle seemed even worse than the first. Really not a pleasant wine. No redeeming qualities, honestly. Nothing offensive, horrible, or actively unpleasant. Just a weak, thin-bodied wine with nothing at all going on. Not the first time I've had a major divergence of opinion with JHN. (2546 views)
Tasted by jpleedy on 11/26/2013 & rated 86 points: No idea where the 90+ point ratings are coming from and I am usually fairly generous.

This is a pretty mediocre Zin. A little thin, just not a whole lot happening. I, too, am suspicious of motives on some notes-free ratings. (2512 views)
Tasted by Parnelli on 11/23/2013 & rated 89 points: Like previous bottles, delicious dark bramble fruit on the nose and palate with a little vanilla and spice. Enjoyable. (2157 views)
Tasted by mazik on 10/20/2013: I'm dubious about the ratings without tasting notes, looks like a troll at work, perhaps in the pay of Jonathan H. Newman of WTSO ratings fame. Tasting notes on the 2010 vintage don't suggest that this is 90+ wine. (1831 views)
Tasted by Parnelli on 9/28/2013 & rated 89 points: For the price, with was at wonderful zin. Lots of dark fruit, vanilla and spice ... had 2 bottles of it prior to leaving for Crescendo. (890 views)
Tasted by Parnelli on 9/28/2013 & rated 89 points: See first note for this date. (1100 views)

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
