Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 48 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by forceberry on 8/3/2023 & rated 90 points: 100% Riesling from the Paradiesgarten vineyard. Fermented and aged in stainless steel tanks and old oak barrels of various sizes. 12% alcohol.

Remarkably youthful and quite pale lime-green color. The nose feels youthful, somewhat sweet-toned and still slightly reductive with expressive aromas of ripe greengage and juicy citrus fruits, some creamy notes from the oak aging, a little bit of stony minerality, light spicy nuances, a hint of fresh nectarine and a faint reductive touch of smoke. The wine feels youthful, broad and fresh with a medium-to-moderately full body and dry, remarkably acid-driven flavors of lemony citrus fruits, some woody notes of savory oak spice, a little bit of stony minerality, light candied primary notes of gummi bear, sweeter hints of pineapple and greengage and a subtly bitter touch of pithy grapefruit. The bracing acidity lends great sense of intensity, focus and structure to the wine. The finish is clean, ripe and focused with a rather long aftertaste of ripe white fruits and youthful tropical fruits, some grapefruity tones, a little bit of creamy oak, light stony mineral notes, a hint of tangy salinity and a touch of borderline unripe red apple.

A nice, tasty and sleek Riesling that is not only surprisingly brisk for a Von Winning wine, but also shows surprisingly little oak influence - I guess these non-GG (ie. Erste Lage) wines are now slightly more oaked than how they used to be ten years ago. The wine feels super youthful even at the age of ten years - although the wine settles down in the glass and loses some of its most primary tones with air - which promises quite a lot of aging potential for this wine. It's hard to say whether the wine will just keep or will it actually evolve and improve from here, but whatever the case is, this wine is not going to fall apart anytime soon. Maybe not the most impressive wine in the von Winning range, but a lovely and wonderfully refreshing effort all the same. Recommended. (503 views)
Tasted by wino_tim on 2/5/2023 & rated 93 points: Medium gold. One of those wines I really wish I had more of, this seems to be comfortably and easily middle aged at the moment, offering pronounced aromas of green apple, honeydew melon rind, lemon curd, rhubarb, petrol, honeysuckle, vanilla blossom and crushed rock minerality. On the palate this enters super rich and almost sultry and decadent, but by the mid palate its nearly high acidity and high level of dry extract steps in and offers balance. Dry, nearly full bodied, and just flat out delicious with plenty of gas left in the tank. (466 views)
Tasted by wayfarer on 6/4/2022 & rated 92 points: Drank over three nights. Deep yellow in glass. Striking core of aged citrus acidity/minerality with amazing layers of apple, tangerine, lemon, yellow stone fruit shifting back and forth across the palate and lofting in nose with hints of resin. Rich on the tongue and long finish. What a dance of tart near sweetness. Age has worked some wonders with this last of three bottles. Outstanding across all tastings, best days 1 and 2. (823 views)
Tasted by Nanda on 7/25/2021 & rated 90 points: Bone dry with terrific energy, minerality and stone fruit. Still in a high energy, peak drinking window. (1465 views)
Tasted by mjf@ulkner on 6/19/2019 & rated 91 points: Golden yellow. Light petrol on nose. Crisp, with plenty of minerality. Juicy nectarine and tangerine notes. More open than previous tastings. A ridiculous value. Good now, but has potential to improve. (1860 views)
Tasted by Rieslingfan on 6/9/2019: Riesling on the rocks! Still plenty of crisp fruit, and also vibrant minerality. It tastes salty and chilling, as if an icicle is in the glass. It’s not the longest wine, but for about $25 on release it’s a heck of a value for dry Riesling. (2145 views)
Tasted by wayfarer on 7/5/2018 & rated 90 points: Drank over several days, best on day 1 and 2, flat on day 3. Quite nice, medium rich, dry but not bone dry as some notes observe. I'd add that the dryness decreased between day 1 and day 2, giving way to a richer, fuller body. Continue to be curious there is such variation across notes/bottles. Here the citrus, apple, hints of yellow stone fruit, light minerality, and very nice acid balance made for a lovely wine, echoing note by TUDZ,. Light nose, moderately long finish. (2029 views)
Tasted by mjf@ulkner on 2/6/2018 & rated 90 points: Bone dry, simple. Crisp, zesty, refreshing. Better on its own than with food. (2133 views)
Tasted by Tudz Drkl on 2/3/2018 & rated 90 points: An excellent wine. The nose was petrol, apples and citrus. The profile rode on a rail of crisp lemon while a richer apple line rode parallel. The balance was right on left the palate clean and refreshed. (1897 views)
Tasted by RolfT on 1/20/2018 & rated 87 points: Pnp. Pleasantly aromatic. Not as intense in flavour and finish, but very pure and high in acidity. Almost bone-dry and in a slightly under-ripe style, so not much to counter the acidity. Probably best with food, but I'll enjoy on its own. Save. Drink 2020-2025.

Tasted by Nanda on 5/15/2017 & rated 91 points: Beautiful racy, mineral-laden riesling. Tons of acidity and lean, crisp orchard and citrus fruit. Well done in a bone dry style. (2325 views)
Tasted by Tudz Drkl on 9/5/2016 & rated 89 points: Very nice. Dry with plenty of citrus (lime) and notes of diesel fuel. The acidic structure is bright and supportive. (2270 views)
Tasted by wayfarer on 4/16/2016 & rated 89 points: Mineral and fruit--pear, bit of apple, peach, and citrus, but overall somewhat muted in nose and palate. Clean, light sweetness and acid. Nicely done but subtle. Clearly some variation across tasting notes. Will see how other bottles show down the road. (2313 views)
Tasted by kfinsrud on 4/14/2016 & rated 88 points: Dobbeltdekantert. Preget av gul steinfrukt med fersken i førersetet. Pærer og epler også. Medium intens. Frisk og livlig i munnen. Tropisk. Munner ut i en mineralsk avslutning med god lengde. Balansert med 12 % abv. Ingen petro. Virker ung enda. (2552 views)
Tasted by mjf@ulkner on 3/14/2016 & rated 90 points: A touch of petrol on nose. Well balanced, overall dry in flavor, a bit of sweet orange on finish. Nice but a bit simple today. (2454 views)
Tasted by Puteljen! on 1/22/2016 & rated 92 points: Dry, fresh and lively with lemon and a hint of stonefruits. Zesty acids and lots of minerals. Great stuff! (1213 views)
Tasted by salil on 6/7/2015 & rated 90 points: Leo's Blind Tasting Group - June '15 edition (Amali, NYC): I liked this more on release a couple of years ago, though it's still very good now. The mineral character that stood out so much on release isn't as expressive here - it's much more about its fruit, with lots of bright pear and grapefruit flavours lifted by bright acids and a touch of youthful CO2 spritz on the palate. (3852 views)
Tasted by indiscriminate palate on 6/7/2015: LBTG blind - very very brief notes (Amali, NYC): Painfully young, with a bit of spritz and youthful exuberance. Nice, but not earth-shattering. (2879 views)
Tasted by Christoffer78 on 6/6/2015 & rated 91 points: Wonderful and very mineral driven. The 2012 Paradiesgarten delivers lovely fruit, citrus zest and a lot of minerals like wet slate and granite. An elegant and intricate effort for sure. The palate follows through nicely with a striking acidity, still there is a lovely balance. With enough structure to last for a number of years, this is for sure a wine worth tasting if given the chance. (1493 views)
Tasted by Puteljen! on 3/10/2015 & rated 91 points: On the nose intense combo of classic riesling fruit (pears, more pears, some apple, lots of citrus) intense minerals (chalk, iron) and some gunpowder smoke. No rubber! On the palate it's basically the same story. Medium + to high acidity. Very generous but also very clean in that 2012 way i really like. Not much funk, an virtually crystalline compared to the 2011 version. Still fairly young but has lost some of that peardrop pop really young riesling often exhibit. Lovely! (2368 views)
Tasted by alr6767 on 12/8/2014 & rated 92 points: Light golden color. Intoxicating floral nose, great depth. Palate is dominated at this stage by lime, rocks, and bracing acidity. Finish is dry yet expansive, doubling back on the acidity with a bit of mousse. Really great pure stuff, not for the citrus adverse. (2520 views)
Tasted by RolfT on 9/10/2014: Very young and closed. High acidity. Very dry. Has not opened up even after 24h. (2841 views)
Tasted by kdsipe on 8/27/2014 & rated 91 points: Very good wine. Ripe yet structured and delicate. Lots of tropical notes with peach, papaya and guava coming to the fore with herbs, petrol and a mineral saline note in the background. On the palate, medium to light bodied, fine, a little reserved, the rs is noticeable but well judged, and the overall impression is one of balance. And once again the German Riesling is drained before it has a chance to really open up and show itself. Not as fine as a Mosel, this was a bit more chunky. The wine and the package don't seem to be in accordance, big heavy bottle, fancy script. (2332 views)
Tasted by ekenneth on 8/19/2014 & rated 89 points: Nice dry riesling, drank over a few nights. It's crisp, dry and juicy; green apple, apricot, and peach pit. (2177 views)
Tasted by danielbleier on 8/11/2014 & rated 88 points: flavors of green apple, vanilla, and wet stone. (2111 views)

#2014 Vintage Notes:
2014 Vintage Report by Terry Theise
2014 Vintage Report by Wine Spectator
"My gut still tells me the Saar (and to some extent) the Ruwer are better overall in 2014 than the more storied areas of the Mosel proper, but those that spent the requisite time living in their middle-Mosel vineyards made some of the most electric and "feathery" Riesling in a long time (maybe the finest in 20 years - yes, it's true!)" - Jon Rimmerman (Of course only a very short historical memory would call the Saar and Ruwer less 'storied' than the middle Mosel - jht)
