Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 88.1 pts. and median of 88 pts. in 21 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by JerM on 4/18/2021 & rated 94 points: [Museum Release 1/1/08] Rich dark berries, kirsch, blackforest, savoury leather, mandarin peel, 5spice, juicy. Mocha. Tannins well resolve, soft and silky, opulent, concentrated and yet elegant. An absolute joy and stunner. Long eucalypt finish, black wet earth, smoke and savoury leather. Excellent, wished I had more. Drinking at a great place presently - power yet elegant. (1164 views)
Tasted by Peter Wine on 1/2/2016: This was still in great shape.
The body is medium. The wine has polished texture. The wine finishes medium. The wine has low acidity. (2684 views)
Tasted by Meridianus on 8/18/2015 & rated 90 points: Internationals vs. Hungarians - blind tasting with friends: Visible tartrate crystals, it was obvious that this wine wasn't new.
Sweet, sherry-like aroma. Complex and really well balanced taste with an exceptionally long finish. (3132 views)
Tasted by Dr AJ on 1/22/2013 & rated 82 points: Fully mature but still fresh. Medium-bodied. Raspberry, blackberry, dark cherry. Chocolate and leather. Pleasant, but a little flat on the palate. Lacking in vigour, vivacity, elegance. (4309 views)
Tasted by bacchus of knockholt on 1/19/2012 & rated 88 points: Dark core with light brick edge. Nose of spice, cedar, red fruit and eucalyptus. To taste the first impression was fresh red currant fruit with bright acidity, integrated tannins but some heat. Very good but alcohol quite prominent. (4683 views)
Tasted by Maestro on 5/17/2010 & rated 88 points: Still viable, but certainly over the hill. The tannins are completely broken down and the wine comes across a bit thin. The aromatics are still good, with eucalyptus, chocolate, wet earth and dark cherries. Better with food. Drink now. (5461 views)
Tasted by manga on 4/4/2010 & rated 91 points: Ruby, red. Fresh mint and menthol and cedar complex the nose. Dried red berry/cranberry nose. The palate leads with cedar and berry flavors and a touch of dried orange peel moving into milk chocolate. Very silky in the texture. The acid seems to stay in focus on the layered finish of black tea. Drink up! Paired extremely well with rack of lamb with a caramelized shallot crust. (4082 views)
Tasted by Jaynaisbitt on 3/31/2010 & rated 90 points: Eucalyptus, cherry tunes, mulberry, hints of coffee and good tannin. Lost some fruit and power in aging, but still a pleasant Shiraz. (3919 views)
Tasted by ed-d on 12/31/2009 & rated 92 points: New Year's Eve - Good spicy Aussie Shiraz without being over the top. (2741 views)
Tasted by Biggsy on 9/24/2009 & rated 88 points: Rich garnet colour. Softer nose than the 2005 tasted alongside it. Sweet fruits; raspberry and blackcurrant with cloves and a hint of sandalwood. Quite a lean body with good acidity and grippy tannins. More developed secondary flavours on the palate: wood, leather, spicy black pepper and soft sour blackcurrant on the finish. Good. (2137 views)
Tasted by jamieirving on 5/25/2009 & rated 90 points: With a deep purple core, and bricky red edges, this wine shows aged leather, capsicum, earth and white pepper on the nose. The palate is dry and full bodied. It shows baked plum, liquorice and spice characters. Soft tannins on the finish. Good balance. Still has some years left in it! (2513 views)
Tasted by Florida on 1/25/2009 & rated 85 points: Overall, I enjoyed this wine. While I would agree it is a bit thin, there are still aromas and flavors of berries and cherries. However, if I would have tasted this blind, I would have never have guessed it to be a shiraz as it tends to taste more like a cab.
Very light tannins. Quick finish. Certainly not a disagreeable wine, but, for the price, would expect a little more.
Purchased at auction, so I guess I should be happy it was drinkable. (2373 views)
Tasted by jrf on 10/12/2008 & rated 82 points: Disappointing, both as there's nothing left and i would have expected this wine to still be viable, and because of what it is now for the original price point paid. (2404 views)
Tasted by jrf on 4/27/2008 & rated 85 points: Past it's prime. Black cherry fruit on the finish. Not much of a noise, fruit has faded overall. (2509 views)
Tasted by otisabdul on 5/11/2006 & rated 81 points: Purchased on release for $30. A spicy shiraz with green flavors of pickling spices and bell pepper. Thin and angular in the mouth, almost emaciated. Disappointing. Drink up. (3106 views)

Jim Barry Shiraz The McRae Wood

In 1964 Jim Barry, and his wife Nancy, purchased 70 acres of prime farm land from their friend and neighbour, Duncan McRae Wood. On this special site they planted their first Shiraz vineyard.

The McRae Wood Shiraz is made from grapes declassified from The Armagh and blended with fruit from special parcels from the family’s other Clare Valley vineyards.

Rich and intense, it was considered a modern and innovative style of wine, when it was first released in 1992.

Made using the ‘Jim Barry’ method and as such can be enjoyed upon release, but would equally benefit from cellaring to allow the wine to show some mature characteristics that come with age.
