Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 30 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Neurowine1 on 2/25/2020: Agreed, this is nice. Cool restrained fruit, tar, and cocoa. I really dig the finish, persistent and unctuous. Cornas ringer here. I dont know anything about this, but would keep my eye on this domaine. (957 views)
Tasted by bhouk on 11/7/2019: Smoked meat and sea sea spray with apricot and pits. Interesting, complex, savory — pretty much what I am looking for and very fairly priced. (990 views)
Tasted by RussK on 5/3/2018 & rated 91 points: Russk. My WOTN at CDC. Andrea brought. Can be found on Wtso. Black olive. Gammy, juicy, savory. Reminded me of a 2012 Builly. Nice low alcohol 12%. Mige, reviewer below, is right. The wine does transform a bit after being open for a while taking on more nail polish notes. Get some, but don't decant or keep open to long. (1735 views)
Tasted by Mige on 11/18/2017: Man this was wierd one. Tasted half of it on Friday with some chinese take away and it was all that I was looking for. Really aromatic Syrah on the nose. A bit of co2 left so a hint of frizzante on the palate but anyways easy going and vibrant stuff. I though I leave the rest for next day. Boy was I wrong. 24h killed it. Nose was bearable but the palate. My gosh haven't tasted anything this foul in ages. It was like couple of weeks old band-aid soaked in water with dead mouse. (2038 views)
Tasted by hutch on 10/21/2017 & rated 91 points: Was super wonderful with lots of peppercorn and a little game. I tend to prefer these when it comes to price vs. the St. Joseph. (2004 views)
Tasted by ews3 on 3/5/2017 & rated 91 points: impressive. lots of black olive and herbal character on this, sitting on top of a surprising amount of black fruit. black pepper. nice finish. well balanced. (2155 views)
Tasted by brinko99 on 10/27/2016 & rated 93 points: Everything I love about Syrah was captured in this bottle. The perfume of fresh ripe fruits along with cured black olives and menthol. The taste matched the nose along with a juicy structure. The wine was vibrant and youthful; perhaps due to the very black synthetic cork. Aerated by whisk for a few mins before returning to bottle and drinking an hour later. (2300 views)
Tasted by wgmccallum on 10/2/2016 & rated 87 points: Intense aromas of violets, ash, blueberries. Lively palate of red plums with a bit of spritz, floral afternotes, moving into a smooth tannic finish of medium length. Well put together, good with steak, chanterelles, and parmesan roasted cauliflower. 50 + 16 + 15 + 6. (1785 views)
Tasted by MartyL on 6/19/2015 & rated 90 points: Dumb, reductive, and overly acidic on the first day, this wine blossomed aromatically after the bottle was open about 24 hours. At that point classic syrah aromas emerged---black fruits, a little gameyness, faint florals, and it was a pretty thing---really a different bottle than it was when I opened it the day before. (3183 views)
Tasted by Phredd on 3/12/2015 & rated 88 points: Somewhat translucent purple-red, the nose on this is oddly sour. It's not funky, exactly, but it almost smells like something is spoiling. Forturnately, there are some positive elements of forest floor and spice, with just the barest hint of some blackberry and vanilla. The palate is mild in flavor, but with a sharp edge to it. Under-ripe strawberries, with tart blackberry and some lemon, the mid-palate has enough tannin to dry the mouth, but not enough to completely overpower the mild flavor, tending towards herbs and tree bark, with a bit of white pepper. The finish is medium in length with just a bit of somewhat distracting bitterness. It a decent, somewhat interesting weeknight wine. It isn't really worth the $24 price paid, unfortunately. It's a Garagiste Mystery Case miss in my book, though clearly others disagree. (3139 views)
Tasted by Finare Vinare on 1/29/2015 & rated 89 points: Fresh, juicy and slightly spicy, with semi-carbonic syrah aromatics such as white pepper, salmiak, herbs and violets. A bit short but that's easily fixed with another sip. Lovely! (3382 views)
Tasted by RedderTheBetter on 1/18/2015 & rated 91 points: Lovely, light earthy tones with hint of pepper. (2490 views)
Tasted by Gooka on 10/27/2014 & rated 89 points: Light, earthty and elegant. Good acidity and low tannins. Very enjoyable if you like fresh and feminine style. (1916 views)
Tasted by Michael Davidson on 10/27/2014: Savory, earthy syrah. A little low on acid, but otherwise very pleasant. (2731 views)
Tasted by BCharlieG on 7/30/2014 & rated 91 points: See prior tasting notes. Lots of BBQ and grilled lamb on the nose on this one. a little more gamey than previous bottles. Light and natural. Beautiful wine. Very herbal. (2926 views)
Tasted by jcha24 on 5/20/2014: really like this wine....lots of pepper on the nose and noticeably lighter than the other US syrahs at the dinner. very gulpable. (2645 views)
Tasted by BCharlieG on 5/19/2014 & rated 92 points: Not much more to say about this one...i keep buying them and drinking them. great herbal elegant. finessed. (2355 views)
Tasted by BCharlieG on 4/4/2014 & rated 91 points: perfectly consistent with prior notes. This is such a good weeknight wine. 12% alcohol, super herbal and cool. overwhelming lavender. paired with crab cakes last night. (2285 views)
Tasted by BCharlieG on 4/3/2014 & rated 91 points: consistant w prior tasting notes (2197 views)
Tasted by moonmountain on 3/27/2014 & rated 83 points: Hmmm. Accept it for what it is. A thin low-alcohol wine from clearly modest fruit in an region known for as much. Even at $25 a bottle, a very poor value for the money. The nose out performs but ultimately tastes like a wine that would cost at best half the price. Fine for half a glass over dinner but don't get your hopes up on this. Personally, I dumped it after that half glass. Another of the massively over-hyped Garagiste wines at this price range. (2235 views)
Tasted by BCharlieG on 3/1/2014 & rated 91 points: This bottle showing amazing. Beautiful cooked strawberry, tart raspberry, pomegranite and cool minty, herbal thing going on. What a wonderful bottle of wine for the price. Finessed and elegant. Paired with blue fish salad and it was wonderful. Have to find more of this... (1903 views)
Tasted by Xavier Auerbach on 3/1/2014 & rated 89 points: A private dinner (Restaurant Ekstedt *, Stockholm, Sweden): No sulphur. Very youthful and primary, incredibly floral (violet), the purest sweet cherries, there is a slight feel of grape juice but it does come across as the finished product, silky, ripe acidity, nice hint of tannic grip; nice flavours and length. (2366 views)
Tasted by BCharlieG on 1/19/2014 & rated 90 points: This wine is delicate and sophisticated. Very austere nose at first with a nose fragrant of baked strawberry, rubarb and tart raspberry. The cherry fruit here is subtle and the nose is highly perfumed with lavender and roses. This is a beautiful country wine. At only 12% it's easy to drink with good acid balance to keep it fresh on the palate. Very little game notes as would be expected with northern syrah but elements of cool herbs like bay leaf and rosemary and a touch of taragon to keep it clearly old world. Pretty bottle. Probably drink this with pork, chicken, and something not too fatty given the very delicate tannin structure of this wine. (1907 views)
Tasted by markfitz on 9/6/2013: Nose is wild and dark, maybe bordering on reduced but it draws me in. Gentle fruits on the palate with some length and tannins if you go searching. Opens out after about two hours. Maybe lacks acidity but that doesn't stop my enjoyment. Will probably be better in a year or two. Beyond that is more of a gamble as the plastic cork (solid black, in the style of nomacorc) doesn't inspire confidence, which may be a totally unfounded prejudice on my part. However, i'll stock up with a few more bottles for early-ish drinking. (2113 views)

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

Guide to the wines and appellations of the Northern Rhone Valley -

The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)

Regional History:
Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.

Ardèche

Côteaux de l'Ardèche
Maison Louis Latour has been using its winemaking know-how in the Côteaux de l'Ardèche since the late 1970s. After a 12-year research project we selected the terroirs best suited to the Chardonnay variety, the grape also used in the white Grand Cru wines of Burgundy. Here Chardonnay benefits from the Ardèche's Mediterranean climate and its geographical location, which can be considered a meeting point between northern and southern France. Unlike in Burgundy, the vines are not subject to uncertain weather conditions and the grapes are able to attain full ripeness each year. These factors, when combined with the region's high altitude of around 270 metres and its clay-limestone soils, are the reasons behind the remarkably consistent quality, and balance of our Ardèche wines. They are characterised by southern fruit ripeness combined with a freshness and acidity more akin to the wines of Burgundy.
