Tasted by Phylloxera63 on 6/2/2023 & rated 92 points: Pnp. Upon opening a stinky barnyard nose that somehow pleases me. Lots of iron and blood flavors mixed with tobacco leafs and a sweetish cocoa bean-chocolate mix. Quite intriguing nose, to go short. Good concentration and stuffing with melted tannins and a sweetish, funky mid palate. Reminiscent of right bank Bordeaux but then again quite different. Just love it because of its idiosyncrasies. One more bottle left of this vintage. (276 views)
Tasted by Joelene on 3/12/2022 & rated 91 points: Delicious for the price. Some funk and leather, drinking very nicely right now. (734 views)
Tasted by Phylloxera63 on 9/17/2021 & rated 93 points: Consistent with previous note. Very fruit forward and aromatic. Slight bitterness on aftertaste. Funky wine. In a perfect spot right now and will provide drinking pleasure for the next five years, I’m sure. Not one of the usual suspects! (1146 views)
Tasted by Thek on 9/16/2021 & rated 90 points: Deep ruby color. Aromatic nose of fresh hickory smoke, red licorice, pencil shavings, black fruit. Palate matches the nose with smokiness mingled with dark red and black fruit on the front, a bit of acidity on the middle and end, and a smoky finish. Acidity is medium plus, tannins are medium light and slightly coarse.

This is a nice, powerful, and rich wine that is driven by a smoke-centric profile with black and red fruits rounding out the palate. I don't know much about this winery or why the wine is so smoky, but it's an unusual wine (this is my second bottle of this vintage and both were consistent). It doesn't have the vanilla notes that I think of being associated with barrel toasting, it's more like pure campfire smoke. I enjoyed it, but you have to be ok with an aggressively overpowering wine to like this. 90-91 (1171 views)
Tasted by Bfinny00 on 9/5/2021 & rated 93 points: This wine is deep ruby in hue with more garnet color developing towards rim. It is very aromatic and its aromas include blackberry, cigar box, and meat. On the palate, it is more fruit forward with black and red fruits really coming out. It is dry with low-medium acidity, medium body, medium tannins, a plush mouthfeel, and a nice medium finish. It is drinking very well for 11 years old and is an incredible QPR ($22). Excellent!  Tasted by pgb67 on 4/5/2021 & rated 91 points: I think I need to be drinking more South African wines. Really enjoyed the smoky, earthiness of this wine, along with the aged notes of cherry on the palate. At the 10 year mark, it is absolutely in a great spot. I wouldn't liken it to a Bordeaux as it was uniquely South African - maybe a Cali syrah is the best comp? (1248 views)

Tasted by Brian Glas on 2/23/2021 & rated 88 points: Popped and poured. Medium/dark garnet color. Some volatile acidity on the nose. Burnt rubber. Some dark cherries and cinnamon notes on the palate. Nice balance. Plenty of lift and high toned fruits. Finish just drops out on the end. This wine is going in so many different directions it is hard to rate. (715 views)
Tasted by Phylloxera63 on 12/26/2020 & rated 93 points: This wine shows that a different terroir will significantly influence the end-product when using the same Bordeaux blend. Much more barnyard notes due to the Cabernet Franc, that gives this wine a distinct flavour, making it taste somehow like a Saint-Emilion. Good breeding. Liked this so much that I ordered an extra 6 bottles. At 19 euros you can't beat this quality in B'x. Paired perfectly with sirloin steak. (659 views)
Tasted by snarfglk on 7/3/2019 & rated 88 points: A claret style which got bigger day 2. Old school with muted fruit; not my style. (1285 views)
Tasted by snarfglk on 4/1/2019 & rated 89 points: Still young. Pretty flat day 1 but opened nicely day 2. (1349 views)
Tasted by Krassens on 6/23/2016 & rated 92 points: Dark brick red, sharp rim. Thick, deep bouquet with notes of dark cherries, leather, tobacco, grilled meat, soil, some oak - very typical Stellenbosch terroir I'd say.
On the palate great length, balanced tannins, dark berries, lots of heat, earth, elegant. 92-93 p (2316 views)
Tasted by jk@kttlaw.com on 5/21/2016 & rated 95 points: My favorite retailer really promoted this wine and I was impressed. "The Moregenster Lourens River Valley Red was vibrant and fresh, offering up aromas of blackcurrant and cherry with notes of clove, chive and anise.

Yet in my experience a truly outstanding wine explodes with intensity right from the middle. This red showed exactly that, with a palate of vanilla, cacao and caramel. So intense were the flavors that it was downright delicious, inviting one to take another taste. It was sheer ecstasy with a sweetness of fruit that was lip smacking and brought an immediate smile to my face. The intense fruit of this wine was balanced with good acidity and velvety, well integrated tannins. The spiciness of the Cabernet Franc balances this plush, crowd pleasing Bordeaux blend. I could have sworn that I was drinking a first rate St Emilion!

This wine drinks beautifully right now. Yet with its great acidity and well balanced tannins, I have no doubt that it will gracefully improve in the bottle for years to come. So delicious is it at this moment, I doubt I'll have the patience to cellar it. It simply tastes too good! " (2371 views)
Tasted by cab blends on 1/16/2016 & rated 90 points: Classic chalk nose was a give away for SA Cabernet. A nice light hint of chlorine on the nose too.

Dar red with a dry finish. Tannins are moderately heavy at (7.5/10) (2370 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

Stellenbosch Wine Routes

Stellenbosch

The historical town of Stellenbosch boasts a winemaking tradition which stretches back to the end of the 17th-century.

Stellenbosch is the educational and research centre of the winelands. Stellenbosch University is the only one in South Africa with a viticultural and oenological department, and many of the country's most successful winemakers studied there. The Nietvoorbij Institute of Viticulture and Oenology is also in Stellenbosch and this organisation has one of the most modern experimental wineries in the world and, at its experimental farms (situated in several wine growing districts), important research into new varietals, clones and rootstocks is undertaken.

The mountainous terrain, good rainfall, deep well-drained soils and diversity of terroirs make this a sought-after viticultural area. The rapidly increasing number of wine estates includes some of the most famous names in Cape wine. The district, with its mix of historic estates and contemporary wineries, produces excellent examples of almost all the noble grape varieties.

The intensively farmed Stellenbosch district has been divided up into several smaller viticultural pockets including Jonkershoek Valley, Papegaaiberg, Simonsberg-Stellenbosch, Bottelary, Devon Valley and Banghoek.
