| Community Tasting Notes | | Tasted by srh on 4/6/2019: Winebar [1 Rosé, 3 Whts, & 8 Reds] from 04/05/19 + 5 Shared Bottles (Vintage Wines Ltd., San Diego, CA): THANK you for expanding my (limited) experience with AU C.S., Dr. Tom! :)
Apparently "only released in top vintages;"
N: RIPE, poss jammy, dk frts, POSS with undertones of pyrazines? Intensity lurking?
P: Med, poss MF, body; RNDISH entry with NICE, ALMOST swtish frt firmed by some astringent pucker which fairly seamlessly morphs into quite a LONG, impeccably BALANCED finish with a tangy/swt/bitter trialectic to the FEW remaining tannins. At its peak (?), but showing NO signs of tiring, drink this gem now & through '21, POSS longer. VERY impressive! 14.0% ABV; My EXC/EXC+. 95 pts James Halliday, and 93 ea Jeremy Oliver, The Wine Front (Walsh), & WE @ $83! Right away the color was noticeable, almost purple in color showing no signs of the age, still very bright.
On the first sniff the eucalyptus nose was almost overwhelming. Just a ton of eucalyptus, I was worried it was going to hold on and we wouldn't be able to get past it, but after a few swirls it really mellowed out. Bright fruit flavors, red and black berries, plum, currants. The eucalyptus never went away, also signs of menthol, granite and a little graphite. Tannins are M+ but softened a little with the age. Acid M and M+ to high alcohol, but had enough going on to not be distracting.
A very nice example of a Aussie Cab, likely has another 10+ years of life, tasted much younger than 7 years, would be interested to try in 5-10 years... (1288 views) |

U.S. Importer (Addt'l Info)2010 Jim Barry Cabernet Sauvignon The BenbournieOnly released in top vintages, this is Jim Barry's luxury cuvée of Cabenet Sauvignon. It does see plenty of oak, so it shows impressive notes of baking spices, vanilla and brown sugar, but it backs those with ample dark fruit. It's elegant despite its size, with a fine-grained tannins lingering on the finish. Drink now–2025, and possibly beyond.Cabernet SauvignonCabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.
Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet SauvignonAustralia Wine Australia (Australian Wine and Brandy Corporation) | Australian Wines (Wikipedia)South Australia South Australian Wine Industry Association | South Australian Wines (Wikipedia)Mount Lofty Ranges Mount Lofty Ranges (wikipedia)Clare Valley Clare Valley (South Australian Tourism Comission) |
