Tasted by guitarguy on 4/14/2024 & rated 89 points: I think this one’s time has come, viscous, almost sweet but baked back notes. Must have been ripe fruit and I think this producer has added a more subtle hand to more recent vintages. I wouldn’t hold, this risks sliding into cough syrup territory. Baked fig, raisin and oak notes with wet leather in the nez. (343 views)
Tasted by guitarguy on 2/14/2024 & rated 90 points: Not tired but ready to go, the Wight shows good aromatic lift in the nose with currant and sour cherry in the palate. (480 views)
Tasted by guitarguy on 10/18/2023 & rated 88 points: Nez is very herbal, not a lot of fruit. Red berry and green leaf, bitter notes with pepper and a sourish finish. This feels like it may have a bit of some type of low level contaminant organism. I’d keep a close eye on it and may say finish within 6 months. (520 views)
Tasted by Whine-oh on 5/6/2023 & rated 93 points: Decanted tableside at Restaurant. Lots of fine sed, w/no real bricking. Lovely expression of Napa Valley Cabernet. A bit restrained, but still plenty of wonderful fruit and as always some chocolate notes with soft tannins. Good on own and with our meal. Thank you Lewelling family! (713 views)
Tasted by guitarguy on 1/25/2023 & rated 91 points: Ripe and ready to go, sweet berry, some oak and vanilla notes. Drink any time (736 views)
Tasted by Mneumeier on 5/1/2021 & rated 90 points: Drinking great. (1539 views)
Tasted by ledocq on 2/22/2021 & rated 93 points: Ready! (1794 views)
Tasted by pkouchu on 1/26/2021 & rated 94 points: licorice, cassis, blackberries, tobacco, mocha, oak spice, black raspberries and a hint of savory herbs

tasted blind against some of the napa greats and it came in top three. lost against VHR and Caubad 2010.

Really nice overall texture, everything is well balanced and smoothed out. In it's peak probably, tannins are smoothed out and the fruit is ripe just about to mature. lovely stuff, great QPR in a sense. (1476 views)
Tasted by guitarguy on 6/24/2020 & rated 91 points: I thought this was a solid example of valley fruit with oak influence. Nose includes berry brush notes. Flavors are just about right with balanced purple berry, caressing tannins balanced by acidity and cracked pepper. Could lack a bit on exit. (1729 views)
Tasted by Arcturus on 4/22/2020 & rated 92 points: 92. Black licorice, plum and pepper on the nose. Opulent, thick, jammy midpalate with a tannic tail. A little on the aggressive side but enjoyable. (1723 views)
Tasted by iamandyc on 12/19/2019 & rated 91 points: Second cab in a row that held lots of promise but didn't quite blossom. Deep fruit with good expression but had a steely bitter element on the finish. Didn't go well with venison with a blueberry port sauce -- how is that possible? Hmmm. More giving than the 2012 Relic Corona but the finish made me sad given how nice the entry and mid palate were. (1568 views)
Tasted by Decanting Queen on 6/9/2019 & rated 92 points: Excellent Cali cab drinking much younger than its years. Big ripe fruit and spice but everything so well integrated. I have been sensitive to high alcohol lately but it didn’t stand out in this at all despite 15.3% abv on the label. Good on opening, even better with an hour of air. (2818 views)
Tasted by davidandrose on 9/16/2018 & rated 90 points: It’s about the right time to finish these up. As a pop and pour these needed about 35 minutes to come to room temperature and open up, however this lax the depth or structure one typically fines and a Lewelling. Yes, some of this is due to the vintage but this is my last of three bottles of the standard vintage in the bottle I had a year ago Definitely had more layering and structure. There is a nice polish to the finish but unfortunately it doesn’t have much longevity to it. (1829 views)
Tasted by SMHalps on 9/16/2018 & rated 95 points: Opened but not decanted, and allowed to sit for 45 minutes before pouring. One of three Cabernet wines we had. The 2010 Lewelling Wight, the 2005 Realm Absurd and the 2010 Paul Hobbs Beckstoffer Dr. Crane. Of the 6 of us, this was WOTN for 3 of us. Structured, with a nose of dark fruit and spice, the tannins were nicely balanced with the fruit. As a bonus, it had a long finish. As the least expensive wine of the night, it also had a big QPR. (1941 views)
Tasted by SMHalps on 1/12/2018 & rated 93 points: Part of a Cabernet night with my wine group, were we had, in order, a 2010 Lewelling Cabernet Sauvignon Wight, 2012 Anderson's Conn Valley Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Reserve, 2012 2012 Pride Mountain Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon, and a 2012 Avennia Sestina. All the wines were opened 30 minutes before we started drinking them, we had them one at a time, and only the Lewelling was decanted.

The Lewelling was a big hit. It was probably the group favorite. It tasted very young, and was a big black fruit driven wine. On this night, I probably liked it better on its own, instead of with food. Seems like it has a lot of life left in it. (2211 views)
Tasted by ews3 on 11/9/2017 & rated 93 points: Rich nose of black cherry, licorice, perfume, black pepper, and meat. Palate is still quite youthful with nicely balanced oak and tannins. The rich/sweet fruit is countered by nice spice and herbal elements. Great value for the price and can hang with Napa cabs at twice the price. (2281 views)
Tasted by MD.Gibson on 10/31/2017 & rated 93 points: Lush dark fruit, cassis, and mild vanilla. Front palatte of cherry cola. Nice finish with mild spice on the back. (2102 views)
Tasted by Yack Man on 8/21/2017 & rated 93 points: A rather tasty, full bodied Cabernet. Nice nose and on the palate, prominent, sweet dark cherry and dark berry fruit with some acidity. With the passing of time, the wine did seem to show more character as it did open up. There's half a bottle left, so more notes to come perhaps. (2865 views)
Tasted by heidoanddave on 8/12/2017: Outstanding. (1898 views)
Tasted by iamandyc on 4/8/2017: Rich wine with strong cassis, black raspberry supported by fine tannins. Fragrant nose. Chocolate, caramel, pepper and cedar. (1917 views)
Tasted by SMHalps on 2/22/2017 & rated 95 points: 2010 Napa Valley Night (Lincoln Square Steaks, NYC): Opened and allowed to sit in the bottle for about 50 minutes before we poured it. Big nose, long finish. Tasted the vanilla/oak and the heaviness of wine led most of my group to ID as a 15+% alcohol. But it wasn't hot. Probably the group favorite. (2165 views)
Tasted by davidandrose on 9/23/2016 & rated 93 points: Uncorked and followed over the course of 2.5 hours without decanting. Far better than my previous tasting via coravin. Nose of ripe black fruit that continues onto the palate. As in my prior note, the weight and brevity of the finish reflect the vintage, but the flavors are solid on their own - and outstanding for '10. Stand by my 2020 drinking window, but I don't see how this adds weight (its primary shortcoming) with age. If you enjoy dark fruit wines, this pairs as well (or better) with fish or poultry than with beef. (2113 views)
Tasted by davidandrose on 6/12/2016: Coravin'd a glass which sat for an hour and was followed over 45 mins. Some green notes upfront that are consistent with valley-floor fruit from the vintage. Raspberry as well. While it has some weight it is noticeably leaner than other Lewelling's with an accompanying sweetness; the aroma notes carry into the palate, over a bed of old cedar. Will pop the balance of this bottle later in the year to better gauge its depth and longevity. (2254 views)
Tasted by pakabear on 11/29/2015 & rated 93 points: Tasted blind, guessed the exact wine and year, very obvious lewelling fruit, Black and Blue fruits, toasted oak, very good balance. Average complexity and length, but very good overall. It's drinking great right now so I wouldn't wait, however I don't see it declining in the next 3-5 years. (2600 views)
Tasted by ChrisRCarroll7@gmail.com on 7/25/2015: Breathtaking wine. Best in long time. Made me smile and nod my head. Blackberry, spice on nose. Dark Cherry, Balanced and full bodied. Complex, long finish (1080 views)

Lewelling Vineyards

Producer website

The vineyards of the historic Lewelling estate were established in 1864 near the western foothills in St. Helena by pioneer winegrower and horticulturist John Lewelling. Janice Lewelling Wight, John Lewelling's great-granddaughter, and her husband Russ, together with their three sons, Alan, Doug and Dave, operate a 28-acre vineyard on a portion of the original estate, one of the oldest continuously-owned family vineyards in the Napa Valley.

Over the years Lewelling Vineyards has consistently harvested exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes that have been sold to such fine Napa Valley wineries as Caymus, Galleron, Markham, Viader and Beaulieu Vineyards. With encouragement and assistance from some of these producers, the Wight family began production in 1992 of their own vineyard-designated wine. Each member of the family plays a role in crafting Lewelling Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon.

The Wight family is committed to making wines that showcase the exceptional fruit from this unique vineyard site. Crop size, irrigation, trellising and vine nutrition are managed for optimum grape quality. The wines are carefully hand-crafted using traditional winemaking methods and aged in French and American oak barrels from a selection of coopers. Gentle winemaking and minimal handling are emphasized to preserve the natural richness of the grapes. A program of experimentation with root stocks, clones, trellising and winemaking techniques seeks to enhance the texture, complexity and elegant natural balance of the wines.

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
