Tasted by Tim Heaton on 7/26/2023: Very good. Two years on since the last one, and my third of five cellared since release. Due to the nature of the get together, this was allowed an hour of air; it didn't need more, but two hours would not have hurt, either. Absolutely beautiful, and continued to unfold even into the next day. It's in its preferred zone, and will easily remain there for another decade before any decline. Some primary on the nose and palate, with a slightly more weighted concentration of secondary elements just now. Remains highly recommended.

Tasted by thesternowl on 2/17/2023 & rated 94 points: Opened a few hours before our meal; no formal notes. This is the second time I’ve had the good fortune to drink the 2012 Barolo in the last two years and it remains a beauty in her prime with gorgeous red fruits, roses, hot metal, mushrooms and orange zest. Fabulous structure. Finish is long and saline. No sign of letting up anytime soon and looking back at my previous notes, I can't say there has been too much in the way of evolution either. Stunning pairing with Morgan Ranch filet. Grazie Tim! (1063 views)
Tasted by 5laton on 7/12/2022 flawed bottle: Half bottle. I'm surprised to find a browning appearance with orange highlights, and maderized aromatics. Palate is gone. The cork is very clean, and this bottle was purchased on release directly from one of the US importers. I'm not sure what went wrong here. (1985 views)
Tasted by WineKnurd on 4/23/2022 & rated 94 points: Checking in at the 10 year mark, what can you really say that hasn't been said? All the berries- strawberry, raspberry, black cherries, some blackberries in there too with anise and cola undertones. Almost there in terms of perfect acid-tannin harmony, just slightly bitter on the transition from leather to mild tobacco leaf, adding in expected complexity of tree bark, black tea, and whole stone minerailty as it all comes together. Time in the decanter starts to bring out tertiary notes of dried cherry, unlit cigar (think CAO Gold Connecticut) and herbal tea. Unheralded vintage for sure, but Burlotto delivers the goods. It's stupid I got this for $32. Back up to that A (94) evaluation (see previous notes on the evolution of this wine through its decade lifespan). (1703 views)
Tasted by diggydan on 1/16/2022 & rated 94 points: Deliciously powerful wine packed with tobacco, leathery notes, savory earthiness, and a black cherry core. (2039 views)
Tasted by chablis28 on 6/8/2021 & rated 94 points: 4yrs since my last. Slow ox in btl & Riedel Burgs for 3 hrs prior to dinner. Semi translucent luminous red. Obviously, this sees no barrigues. Wow, this is such a classic & such an overachiever for its humble straight Barolo designation! Profusive aromas of roses, berries &, as Nita noted, citrus on the nose & palate both. Beguiling richness in spite of its energetic, mid wgt feel. Tannins just a touch sandy & drying but barely noticeable. Dark cherry, orange skin, tar, licorice & mineral w/ a long finish. Balanced, elegant & finessed. Like most Barolo, best in a Burg glass. 14% Alc but feels & taste more like 12%. Great tonight with Nita's marvelous stew! Viva las real Barolo! (2272 views)
Tasted by Tim Heaton on 3/30/2021: Very good; seven hour slow-ox. Lovely perfumes include fresh citrus to complement rose, truffle, cherry, etc. By the second glass, the wine's aromas were balanced between grape and place, and at this point, another level of elegance set in that would linger through the final pour. After, I was kicking myself for not getting six; this was fully on par with my highest expectation when tasted upon release. Lovely, will hold. 14,0% abv. highly recommended

Tasted by thesternowl on 3/27/2021 & rated 94 points: Showtime from the very first pour. Absolutely sensational aromatics with red cherry fruit, orange citrus, sandalwood, and roses. So much depth! On the palate, there is red fruits and porcini with a long and lovely, every so slightly saline finish. Gorgeous and now I want more…but this bottle was courtesy of a friend and I live in Nebraska where we don’t always get to have nice things. A fabulous pairing with duck frites and bison tartar.  Tasted by Richard P Howden on 3/4/2021 & rated 93 points: Wow, this is wide open, surprisingly dense and powerful. Rich beautiful nose with rose and other floral notes, strawberry, bright with an earthy undertone. Palate is mid-weight or lighter but remarkably dense with red fruit and earthy notes. Tart cherry on the med-long finish with a hint of tannins and nice balance. The combination of intensity and medium weight is marvelous, just a great great showing for this.

I like this a lot. Haven’t had it since the wine just came out and it is drinking well now. Great to have younger vintages that are ready now. (1594 views)
Tasted by WineKnurd on 8/1/2020: PNP. Beautiful florals right out of the gate- lilac and rosewater with aromas of fresh cut strawberry and cherry. In the glass you get a bit more of the earthy qualities- strawberry leaves and anise with some hints of soil. A few swirls opens up more bright black cherry notes as well.

As great and expressive as the nose was, I have to say that the palate was just as dull and closed down for this bottle, maybe because I didn't decant before serving, drank it faster than it needed to fully open up, or maybe it is in a "shut down" phase for a few years. This might explain the drop off in CT scores around 2018, as I drank this quite a bit 2016 - 2017 and decided I want to keep some to age.

Not rating this one as I do not feel it is truly representative, but will be getting into another bottle in the next 6 months or so to see whats going on here. Don't worry CT fanatics I am on the case! (1762 views)
Tasted by jrick on 2/11/2018 & rated 89 points: Pretty good entry level barolo with all the typical markers - roses, mint, violet, wild strawberry, a little raspberry and a tiny hibt of chocolate on the palate. A bit sweet on the fruit and a little warm in the finish on day one especially. My first Burlotto and I struggle to make out any distinctive house style in this wine. (3107 views)
Tasted by Jvanwinkle on 12/24/2017 & rated 91 points: Garnet to brick orange at rim. Lifted and tart red and purple fruit aromas. Medium plus acidity and tannins that were mostly resolved. With some time the wine developed additional pine, mint, and tar aromas but never strayed from its lithe personality. Not sure this will get a whole lot better from here--feel free to drink now as you wait on other, more structured bottles to develop. (2486 views)
Tasted by eluebchow on 11/20/2017 & rated 90 points: This is a beautiful young Barolo that opens up after about 90 minutes of air; Black cherry, tar, earth and floral notes on the elegant palate, which should continue to evolve for years but is quite pleasant to drink now with a short decant (2449 views)
Tasted by Jeanda on 11/13/2017 & rated 80 points: Nez complètement fermé, même après un long carafage. Bouche maigre et alcooleuse, tanins secs. C'est la 2e bouteille que j'ouvre pour obtenir ce résultat aussi décevant. Est-ce que les barolo 2012 se sont complètement refermés ? (2473 views)
Tasted by WineKnurd on 10/14/2017 & rated 94 points: Decant and go. Floral rose-cherry blossom notes, bright cherries and anise on the nose; similar palate with tobacco hints and a tarry finish. Tannins no longer quite as woody, more bittersweet chocolate and softer drinking. After time in the decanter the cherries go from tart to sweet with black plum, garden soil, tea leaves, and licorice notes developing on the palate. Notes of chocolate covered cherries, cherry cola, and sassafras reveal on the nose. Great development, still plenty of acidity; my opinion is that its close to it's ultimate drinking window. See previous notes. Overall Evaluation: A (94). (2258 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 8/19/2017 & rated 90 points: Tasting, brief note. Enticing aromas elegantly combine floral, spice and red fruit. Similar flavors with moderate weight and very good cherry notes to start, then a slightly austere/ drying finish that will need 5+ years in the cellar to soften. A great value entry-level Barolo. (1995 views)
Tasted by chablis28 on 8/15/2017 & rated 92 points: Slow ox in btl for 3 hours prior to dinner. Tanslucent luminous red color. Obviously, this wine sees no barrigues. Profusive floral aromas of roses and berries. Beguiling richness in spite of its energetic, at best, mid weight feel. Dark cherry, orange skin, tar, licorice and mineral with a long finish. Balanced, elegant and finessed. Perhaps a bit more tannin tonight absence food after dinner. Like most Barolo & Barbaresco, best in a Burg glass. 14% Alc but feels and taste like 12%. 92+ tonight. (1793 views)
Tasted by jonanator on 5/18/2017 & rated 91 points: Absolutely delicious right now. Open and approachable. So much elegance. Really like this. (1772 views)
Tasted by chablis28 on 4/8/2017 & rated 93 points: PnP in a Burg glass and slow ox the rest in btl over 2 hours prior to dinner worked, perfectly. I actually enjoyed this much more, right now, than a recent btl of the 2012 Monvigliero which still needs a lot more time than the basic Barolo to really strut its stuff. This has a translucent luminous red color and obviously sees no barrigue. Profusive floral aromas of roses and berries. Beguiling richness in spite of its energetic, at best mid weight feel. Dark cherry, strawberry, orange skin, licorice and mineral with a long finish make for such a complete wine out of the gates. Balanced, elegant and finessed. An occasional reminder of the underlying structure can be felt but its largely in check. I don't see this needing tons of air but rather, a couple slow ox hours like I gave it. Defintely, like most Barolo & Barbaresco, best in the Burg glass. 14% Alc but no sense of it here. I love this wine and placed an order for 4 more today. I have around 120 btls of assorted Barolo and Barbaresco and I'll keep adding more as I love Nebbiolo almost as much Pinot Noir. (2182 views)
Tasted by Mivvy on 3/2/2017: Drunk over a couple of nights. It was very light on its feet on night one, floral and delicate, some cherry, orange peel and a little grip on the tannins. Day two there was more structure, tannins had a lot more grip but the nose and palate had opened up a bit more. (2039 views)
Tasted by Seth Rosenberg on 2/2/2017 & rated 90 points: A Seminar on G.B. Burlotto with Winemaker Fabio Alessandria (Manhattan Wine Company (New York, NY)): Shy nose with tar, citrus peel. Elegant and cool, precise, touch of cherry. Finish is tar, peel, minerals, savory. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 4.5/6, Finish - 4.5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 15/20. (2813 views)
Tasted by jonanator on 1/4/2017 & rated 90 points: Great nose, very perfumed, fine tannins, grippy but still enjoyable at this stage. (1784 views)
Tasted by WineKnurd on 12/4/2016 & rated 94 points: Following Wine Strategies advice I poured into a decanter but couldn’t wait the full 90. Poured a glass at 30 minutes and was greeted with elegant, floral notes of rose water, cherries, and cherry blossoms; the palate was still a bit reticent so I let it breathe for another hour before going back.

Wins Strategies is right, after 90 minutes I got all of this as part of some excellent sip to sip development, in no particular order: tart red cherry, sweet strawberry, licorice, leathery tannins that add a bittering quality but no astringency, rustic hints of tree bark, black tea and forest floor, deep cherry kirsch with spicy cola and anise, a spicy leather and sandalwood finish that lasts, and some cacao hints sprinkled in for good measure.

All of the aromas are bright and clean with deep flavor but elegant and restrained (sophisticated even). Great structure and harmony between the acid, tannin, alcohol, and oak.

Style & Quality: A (94). Very clean and pure in style, classic Barolo, definite feminine style with some serious development right now. It’s definitely ready to drink now but I feel it still has time left; will be hard to keep in the cellar. One of the most impressive 2012 Piedmont wines I have tasted thus far.

Value: A (95). $39 and change from Vine2Home. Sold.

Overall: A (94). (1648 views)
Tasted by Sixchips600 on 11/12/2016 & rated 90 points: Had this with the 2011 which was more opulent on the nose and palate and rated a point higher. 2012 had a pretty floral, spicy nose. Palate showed bitterness and was austere. It improved with a couple hours of air and remained on day two. Short finish compared to 2011. Based on today's showing, would have been an extra point lower, but I feel the 2012 will develop positively with some age. (1571 views)
Tasted by king-bing on 10/18/2016 & rated 89 points: Decent stuff. V balanced. Still a little kick and some tannins. (1481 views)

Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is a red grape indigenous to the Piedmont region of Italy in the Northwest. The grape can also be found in other parts of the world, though they are not as respected.

Nebbiolo is often considered the "king of red wines," as it is the grape of the famed wines of Barolo DOCG, Barbaresco DOCG, and Roero DOCG. It is known for high tannins and acidity, but with a distinct finesse. When grown on clay, Nebbiolo can be very powerful, tannic, and require long aging periods to reach its full potential. When grown on sand, the grape exhibits a more approachable body with more elegant fruit and less tannins, but still has high aging potential.

"Nebbiolo" is named for the Italian word, "nebbia", which means "fog", in Italian and rightfully so since there is generally a lot of fog in the foothills of Piedmont during harvest.

Nebbiolo is a late-ripening variety that does best in a continental climate that boasts moderate summers and long autumns. In Piedmont, Nebbiolo is normally harvested in October.

Barolo

Regional History:
The wines of Piedmont are noted as far back as Pliny's Natural History. Due to geographic and political isolation, Piedmont was without a natural port for most of its history, which made exportation treacherous and expensive. This left the Piedmontese with little incentive to expand production. Sixteenth-century records show a mere 14% of the Bassa Langa under vine -- most of that low-lying and farmed polyculturally. In the nineteenth century the Marchesa Falletti, a frenchwoman by birth, brought eonologist Louis Oudart from Champagne to create the first dry wines in Piemonte. Along with work in experimental vineyards at Castello Grinzane conducted by Camilo Cavour -- later Conte di Cavour, leader of the Risorgimento and first Prime Minister of Italy -- this was the birth of modern wine in the Piedmont. At the heart of the region and her reputation are Alba and the Langhe Hills. This series of weathered outcroppings south of the Tanaro River is of maritime origin and composed mainly of limestone, sand and clay, known as terra bianca. In these soils -located mainly around the towns of Barolo and Barbaresco -- the ancient allobrogica, now Nebbiolo, achieves its renowned fineness and power.
