Bør nok ligge noen år til. Trøkk. Nesten svart. (2761 views) | | Tasted by Angle Gold on 9/20/2018 & rated 92 points: Very dark and rich. Not as stemmy as I had expected. Some licorice tones to it. (2629 views) | | Tasted by galewskj on 6/12/2018 & rated 92 points: Now, more than 1 month later, it occurs to me that we drank this. And we loved it. However, my memory is limited. I do recall that it was big, and fruity, and it had structure. My wife, who normally struggles with "big" wines, only struggled a small amount with this one. And in the end, she may have liked it more than me. For Ravenswood, this has some sophistication. My interest has been triggered.
My expectation was: 1) Ravenswood = fruit forward, but they kind of know what they are doing. 2) Icon Mixed blacks, should be about the best wine they can bring forward. 3) 2011 is not the best year. This wine met my expectation from those 3 premises and exceeded it. (3017 views) | | Tasted by kevrob822 on 8/21/2017 & rated 88 points: Color is very dark, not clear, but not cloudy... just not transparent. Strongly aerated before tasting. Big strong aroma. Taste is also very dark, rich with pepper spice and lots of blackberry/dark cherry. Also some oak... this is a big dense wine. Very much of a "field blend" taste to it. A big melting pot which makes sense since it's 47% Carignane, 26% Zinfandel, 22% Petite Sirah and 5% Alicante Bouschet. Still fairly tannic, almost like it needed another 3-4+ years. Surprising how briary this was considering it's 6 years old, but still a very nice wine.
Fairly price at $30/WTSO. Overpriced at Ravenswood' price of $75. I'd give this 88 Points and a Good QPR. (3701 views) | | Tasted by JeremyBernton on 8/20/2017 & rated 91 points: Tasted from Coravin. Very nice blend with black fruit, a bit of spice, and lots of structure. Could still use a bit more time but lots of potential. (3608 views) | | Tasted by Nsc70 on 7/24/2017 & rated 90 points: Powerhorse (1647 views) | | Tasted by The Beldens on 3/30/2017 & rated 91 points: Strong performance from Ravenswood. Drinking well now but certainly will be enjoyable for years to come. (1946 views) | | Tasted by Kathygrat on 7/21/2016 & rated 92 points: Terrific wine from start to finish. $30 via WTSO and absolutely worth it. Buy and enjoy! (2522 views) | | Tasted by NutmegNative on 6/25/2016 & rated 91 points: Deep purple color. Blackberry and dark cherry notes, with a bit of smoke, tar and eucalyptus. There's also a unique but pleasant candy spice (fireball candy?) that comes out in the nose after opening up. A nice top-flight effort from Ravenswood. Priced about right at $30/btl at WTSO. (1869 views) | | Tasted by redbrix on 5/26/2016 & rated 90 points: Opaque black red color. A fruit full nose of cherry and black berry. A medium to full body red that is dry with good tannins. After a small pucker, you can taste cherry, eucalyptus, chocolate and what one would expect from a strawberry field. While good, I did expect more at this price point. (1846 views) | | Tasted by isaacjamesbaker on 12/25/2013 & rated 91 points: A purple-magenta color. Smells of blueberries and raspberries, charcoal smoke, sweet black licorice. I’m surprised by the tangy acid, which checks the juicy black cherry and wild blueberry fruit. Firm tannic power, lots of loam, red clay and granite flavors. Full and fleshy but quite easy to drink. I love the pepper and soy sauce notes on the finish. An old school Sonoma blend of 47% Carignan, 26% Zinfandel, 22% Petite Sirah and 5% Alicante Bouschet. 19 months in 40% new French oak. Vineyard Notes In the early 1850’s the first significant vineyards were planted in Sonoma. Over the next half century, the components of “California claret” were narrowed to four distinct varieties - Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Carignane, and Alicante Bouschet - each demonstrating extraordinary quality. Ravenswood’s ICON is a revival of this traditional native Sonoma Mixed Blacks blend produced from old, low-production vineyards planted before Prohibition, and is a tribute to Sonoma County’s incredible ancient vines.
Tasting Notes The 2011 ICON is very dark and dense. It is fully aromatic with sweet black fruit scents, Bing cherries, and plums, accented by toast, vanilla, dark chocolate, espresso, and black pepper. It is big and rich on the palate, with dark fruit flavors, subtle harmonious oak notes, and a long, structured finish. Built for the ages, this wine has classic Sonoma Mixed Blacks flavors. There is nothing else like it in the world.Red Blend.USAAmerican wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.California2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson Sonoma CountyMendocino CountySonoma CountySonoma Coast |
