Community Tasting Notes (average 88.3 pts. and median of 89 pts. in 26 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Mahriah on 9/8/2019 & rated 80 points: It is a bit past in age for this wine. So getting more of the dried fruits, but still very smooth. Preferred this wine younger for my taste. (864 views)
Tasted by JCGuthrie on 1/29/2018 & rated 92 points: Really excellent. Usually drink Ehlers wine younger, but this showed there’s value in holding them longer. Would seek out more at the right price. (1232 views)
Tasted by oenophilemoose on 11/7/2017 & rated 89 points: Decanted for one hour and consumed over the next three. A good Merlot but nothing exceptional or memorable. Basically a "food" wine and not a "stand alone". (1411 views)
Tasted by WineGeek1989 on 5/26/2017 & rated 91 points: On the nose- Beautiful blueberry, strawberry, some nice earthy notes, dark chocolate, black cherry

On the palate- Beautiful blueberry, stawberry with some nice earthy notes, dark chocolate dipped black cherries, the finish is medium with a nice bit of acid from the cooler vintage that was 2011, I think this wine is in a sweet spot right now but I think it could hold for another 3-5 years in the cellar if you wanted (1504 views)
Tasted by bbcc66 on 2/14/2016 & rated 89 points: Decanted for 2 hrs. Dark fruit nose. Consistent tastes of dark fruits & cherries. Tastes were not as big as previous bottles. (1862 views)
Tasted by davidandrose on 10/27/2015 & rated 86 points: Agree w prior note. Reflective of the vintage, it improves somewhat w air. Winemaker tried to do well but off notes on the palate make me happy to put this in the rearview mirror. (1471 views)
Tasted by Rich S on 10/26/2015 & rated 90 points: Popped and poured. Dark ruby color. Dark red fruit aromas on the nose with a little dusty raspberry and black cherry along with some sweet oak spices. Similar flavors on the palate with a bit of chocolate covered cherries on the finish. Medium acid and tannins and medium bodied. Nice and juicy mouthfeel and smooth finish, likely due to lower abv and slightly less ripe fruit than usual but I found this to be quite tasty and very enjoyable overall. I disagree with the notion that the 2011 vintage negatively affected this wine, at least for my palate. Would gladly drink this again. (1100 views)
Tasted by bbcc66 on 10/9/2015 & rated 90 points: Consistent with Feb. 2015 note. (944 views)
Tasted by davidandrose on 9/11/2015 & rated 85 points: Coravin'd a glass and allowed it to sit for 90 mins. Pine needle on the nose, chocolate and dark fruit flavors mask underripe green pepper and spice. (986 views)
Tasted by davidandrose on 4/25/2015 & rated 85 points: Coravin'd a glass; soft, 1.5 dimensional in a manner consistent with the vintage. Muted fruit, not bad but not really good. (811 views)
Tasted by bbcc66 on 2/28/2015 & rated 91 points: Vinturi'ed & decanted for 2 hrs. Nice dark fruit nose with a hint of chocolate. Delicious smooth, well balanced dark fruit tastes. Consistent tastes throughout the bottles. (695 views)
Tasted by herbers on 2/19/2015 & rated 85 points: Black cherry on the nose smooth and bold for a merlot (846 views)
Tasted by Mrp2008 on 5/10/2014 & rated 86 points: The nose is all Cab Franc, which is 5%, but seems much more prominent. Nice herbal (sage?) and pepper notes. Palate is thin and lacking in structure. (1216 views)

Ehlers Estate

Producer website
Ehlers Estate, a historic vineyard property that dates back to 1886, continues today as a steward of the land, creating wines that are reflective of its unique terroir and the passion of its viticultural team headed by winemaker Kevin Morrisey. Certified 100% organic on July 1, 2008 by the California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF), Ehlers Estate crafts expressive and vibrant Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Sauvignon Blanc from vineyard to bottle.

Merlot

Merlot is a dark blue–colored wine grape variety, that is used as both a blending grape and for varietal wines. The name Merlot is thought to be a diminutive of merle, the French name for the blackbird, probably a reference to the color of the grape. Its softness and "fleshiness", combined with its earlier ripening, makes Merlot a popular grape for blending with the sterner, later-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon, which tends to be higher in tannin.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
