Community Tasting Notes (average 91.7 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 170 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Zinlady on 4/13/2024 & rated 91 points: Great finish. Enjoyed with pot roast. Smoky. Good color. Ready to be enjoyed (729 views)
Tasted by Jamieson12o on 2/7/2024 & rated 93 points: 2010 Barolos at Terra Rossa with NLWTS (Terra Rossa, Upper Street): Darker nose than others… cassis?! Very sweet, pretty opulent. Super pronounced nose. Very generous… but not exactly textbook barolo - slightly on steroids! Really fun (and tasty) regardless of any atypicality. (834 views)
Tasted by Joshvoulters on 2/7/2024 & rated 90 points: 2010 Barolo (Terra Rossa, N1): This wine sparked the thought that we need to have a genuinely middle of the road wine at these tastings just to remind ourselves how good everything else is. Because this - which on another night would have given a lot of pleasure - suffered by comparison.

Savoury and beefy with notes of soy and red plum, shiso and a touch of rubber. Sweet and velvety on the palate with a fine grip at the end and latent power which sustains a long finish. Very pleasant but lacks poise. (1326 views)
Tasted by rs666 on 11/28/2023 & rated 91 points: Pretty nice, classic Barolo with all what that means. Pretty acidic and still a bit of bite. Good now but also has a few more years to mellow. (1631 views)
Tasted by Wine Diplomats on 11/20/2023 & rated 91 points: 100% Nebbiolo. The grapes are sourced from Serralunga d’Alba (Ornato, La Serra and Briccolina), Grinzane Cavour (Gustava and Garretti), La Morra (Roncaglie), and Novello (Ravera). Vinification takes place in stainless steel with a 25-30 day maceration. It’s aged 30 months in large French oak botti with a bit of barriques.

Typical nose of rose and smokey tar. Some zest. Some sign of age in the color although Nebbiolo after a few years tends to look orange, brickish. Some citrus, orange peel. Starting to get secondary and tertiary notes too. Some spice and mushroom. A little warm on the backend. Still feels like it needs to integrate a little more. Others wanted more fruit and had a hard time identifying where this was from, so maybe it's an awkward stage or is past its prime a bit. My guess is the former given the producer, region, vintage and variety. Maybe it’s a little darker than some with a little more oak influence, and the tannins have rounded out, but it’s still Piedmont Nebbiolo to me. 91+

Tasted by mvande21 on 10/13/2023 & rated 94 points: Very fragrant. Black fruits, cherries, ash, old leather and dried spices. Savory. Full bodied with structure and balance. Grippy tannins and a long, long finish. Classic Barolo. Delightful with meat sauce spaghetti. (1635 views)
Tasted by Tony T on 9/29/2023 & rated 92 points: This wine has a lot of power. Should match perfectly with meaty Italian dishes. (1459 views)
Tasted by MikaK on 9/25/2023 & rated 92 points: Great powerful wine. Light color. Good spot to drink, maybe on peak at the moment. Nice tannins and aftertaste (1325 views)
Tasted by A&C on 8/21/2023 & rated 93 points: This was great. It is the right time to drink. It paired great with fantastic food and great company tonight at one of the best Italian restaurants in Utah. A wonderful treat. (1589 views)
Tasted by VinhoVerde on 8/19/2023 & rated 92 points: Medium red color. Tar, floral, licorice bouquet. Smooth entry, it immediately displays some tannins. Powerful wine without being heavy. Nice long finish.
This has all of the elements to become an excellent wine. Just needs another 5 years to develop additional complexity and drop tannins.
Decanted for 3 hours. (1378 views)
Tasted by CWilliam on 8/6/2023 & rated 92 points: improved from last tasting 2 years ago. Medium red color. On nose, sandalwood, rose petals, sour cherry, sweet cherry and pipe tobacco. Medium body, medium+ acidity/tannins and long finish. Very balanced wine with great structure. 92+/- Enjoyed this. (1521 views)
Tasted by wineshaman on 7/29/2023 & rated 94 points: Decanted and tasted, with no discernible sediment.
Very nice Barolo, fully mature, with plum, raspberry, dried orange, tea, truffles, long smooth finish. At peak but should hold well for several more years, four bottles left. (1422 views)
(1476 views)
Tasted by wineordeath on 6/7/2023 & rated 92 points: Good. Some characteristic tar and rose. Both are present on the palate at the start, then some dark cherry, acidity creates a high on the finish. Showing some mature oxidative character. A little short though. (1772 views)
Tasted by Seafoam Manor on 1/28/2023: I think this still needs a bit more time. Even with a 2+ hour decant, this was still leaning more on the structure than the fruit, making this slightly bitter. It was still quite good, but I think there's a lot of room for the fruit to emerge, hopefully to the point that the 2004 did at about the same age.

I don't think anyone will be truly disappointed drinking this now, but I would think most would be happier in 2025+. (2236 views)
Tasted by VoVo on 12/25/2022 & rated 94 points: This is a gorgeous wine perfectly aged. Sturdy, well structured, well balanced flavors. Very smooth. Decant for two hours for a delightful drinking experience. (2193 views)
Tasted by DCHawkeye on 11/8/2022 & rated 94 points: I clearly drank the first bottles of this too young. The nose was stunning, the tannins resolved, the fruit lovely. This was a really good Tuesday night wine! (2505 views)
Tasted by Zinlady on 11/6/2022 & rated 89 points: Had in ablind tasting with 7 hour lamb Lightest in body. Color was reddish but transparent Improved over tasting Not balanced (2375 views)
Tasted by steveed on 8/21/2022 & rated 94 points: Brownish red like an old tawny port. Still seems to be a very young wine with many years of life left. Detected very little on the nose. Over a five-hour period the tannins remained exceptionally strong; So strong in fact we feared they might suck our eyes out of their sockets into our mouths, but we loved it. We were not able to discern flavors due to the powerful tannins. But it worked amazingly well with my wife’s homemade pizza sauce and also with her homemade pesto sauce. Gave it a nice rating because Of how well it worked with the meal and because experience suggests that a wine with tannins this strong given long enough time will evolve into something special.  Tasted by Mhbeaune on 5/5/2022 & rated 89 points: I’ve been following this wine ever since buying 6 bottles upon release. Back in the 70’s and early 80’s Barolo was amazing value and generally 10-15 years in the bottle. Today it seems to me a product that is overpriced in the market and modern Barolo’s simply don’t pack the punch. No real body or length.
This is no exception. Pleasant enough but nothing special. I know it is an entry level Barolo from a well renowned producer but really £25 10 years ago from a supposedly very good vintage.
Technically a correct wine But nothing remarkable certainly not to persuade me to part with £100 to buy a top notch example. (3454 views)

Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is a red grape indigenous to the Piedmont region of Italy in the Northwest. The grape can also be found in other parts of the world, though they are not as respected.

Nebbiolo is often considered the "king of red wines," as it is the grape of the famed wines of Barolo DOCG, Barbaresco DOCG, and Roero DOCG. It is known for high tannins and acidity, but with a distinct finesse. When grown on clay, Nebbiolo can be very powerful, tannic, and require long aging periods to reach its full potential. When grown on sand, the grape exhibits a more approachable body with more elegant fruit and less tannins, but still has high aging potential.

"Nebbiolo" is named for the Italian word, "nebbia", which means "fog", in Italian and rightfully so since there is generally a lot of fog in the foothills of Piedmont during harvest.

Nebbiolo is a late-ripening variety that does best in a continental climate that boasts moderate summers and long autumns. In Piedmont, Nebbiolo is normally harvested in October.

Barolo

Regional History:
The wines of Piedmont are noted as far back as Pliny's Natural History. Due to geographic and political isolation, Piedmont was without a natural port for most of its history, which made exportation treacherous and expensive. This left the Piedmontese with little incentive to expand production. Sixteenth-century records show a mere 14% of the Bassa Langa under vine -- most of that low-lying and farmed polyculturally. In the nineteenth century the Marchesa Falletti, a frenchwoman by birth, brought eonologist Louis Oudart from Champagne to create the first dry wines in Piemonte. Along with work in experimental vineyards at Castello Grinzane conducted by Camilo Cavour -- later Conte di Cavour, leader of the Risorgimento and first Prime Minister of Italy -- this was the birth of modern wine in the Piedmont. At the heart of the region and her reputation are Alba and the Langhe Hills. This series of weathered outcroppings south of the Tanaro River is of maritime origin and composed mainly of limestone, sand and clay, known as terra bianca. In these soils -located mainly around the towns of Barolo and Barbaresco -- the ancient allobrogica, now Nebbiolo, achieves its renowned fineness and power.
