Tasted by SuperSomm on 8/4/2023: Deep ruby red colour. Sweet cherries and vanilla on the nose. Taste of sweet cherries and vanilla with hints of spices. Dry finish. Great with deer. (179 views)
Tasted by KVM on 6/26/2021: Better bottle than the last. Clean plummy fruit and ready now. (926 views)
Tasted by KVM on 6/4/2021: Small amount of leakage from cork has soiled the capsule. Cork is spongy and pulls out easily. Nose is red fruit, caramel and herb. Full bodied, sweetie and quite tannic. Some peanut skin. Seems over extracted and slightly oxidized. I have been unimpressed by this Domaine since the new ownership, around 2009. (832 views)
Tasted by Leto South on 5/22/2020 & rated 90 points: Decanted 2 hrs. Brick red, pale edges. Large bq w typical Nebbiolo traits of tar, flowers, some oak, sweet cherry/strawberry fruit, spices. Nice rounded tannins, plenty of acidity, fruit from fresh sour cherries. Fairly long, balanced aftertaste w lingering tannins, some alcohol. Feels a bit polished. While perhaps not a mainstream Barolo, it is not THAT atypical. Time to drink has arrived! (1068 views)
Tasted by Barbat on 11/2/2019 & rated 91 points: Excellent avec fondue chinoise (1363 views)
(4631 views)
Tasted by Bakka on 10/15/2015 & rated 89 points: Classic Nebbiolo. Likeable berries on the nose, but still very closed. Needs a lot of time. Significantly better the next day. Decant for hours or leave in cellar. Decent value for Money. (4558 views)
Tasted by LONGDIVISION on 9/29/2015 & rated 83 points: Nothing going on here, a big disappointment. Possibly flawed (4349 views)
Tasted by Tige on 6/5/2015 & rated 88 points: À carafer plusieurs heures. C'est bon, mais les tannins sont rudes. (4495 views)
Tasted by jasj on 1/9/2015 & rated 91 points: Very nice, obvioulsy needs more time in the cellar. Typical flowers and fruits. Clean, slim body, tanic, good potential. (5017 views)
Tasted by Shiaxonna on 1/3/2015 & rated 88 points: Initially right from the bottle a very flowery and soft wine with not a lot of tannins. After some time in the glass the tannins start to show up more and more, and the power and intensity of the wine increases. Very floral and expressive nose with red fruits and an impeccable balance. Palate is powerful and no-nonsense. This is a wine for ages to come, and I can't wait for my remaining bottles to age 5 years before trying this one again.

Tasted by FjordogFjell on 11/14/2014 & rated 83 points: : ! Nebbiolo-aften i fjorden med broderen. Marsipan og litt alkkoholstikk. Stramme sure kirsebær. 1 dag i åpen flaske, rester på kjøkkenet: Marsipan i dag også, tynn flat frukt. (281 views)
Tasted by Normann on 11/7/2014 & rated 88 points: It appears rather young. but seems to have potential. (2475 views)
Tasted by AudunG on 10/27/2014 & rated 88 points: A wine that did not pass the Barolo gate. Typical Nebbiolo on the nose. In the mouth it is very fruity and easygoing, but seems to have tightened up since last time I tasted it. Much better now. (2431 views)
Tasted by Puteljen! on 9/26/2014 & rated 89 points: Tight and sour to start with but after airing quite nice. Young of course but shows bright red fruit with lingonberrys and sour cherries. Good acidity and quite substantial tannins. Fairly long finish with some spice an tingling sour minerals. Good stuff, but decant well or leave in the cellar for later. (2493 views)
(1761 views)
Tasted by Kurtjo on 9/10/2014: Way too young. Brutal. Hope the fruit will survive the integration. See you in 10 years. (1732 views)
Tasted by Vintomas on 9/8/2014 & rated 89 points: Barolo and other wines from Borgogno (Stockholm): Light red colour. Aromatic and elegant nose with some resin and pine-tree needles, slightly flowery, and with mild spices. Elegant palate with red berries, rather good concentration, good acidity and rather noticeable tannins. Rather accessible, could develop, 89(+) p. (1523 views)
Tasted by Tenuta Stefan on 8/24/2014 & rated 90 points: Bottle in perfect shape.
Carmine red with a hint of orange. Still young, but looks older than 4 years.
When popped and poured the nose is really closed. At first lots of wood with a dusty note and some plum and koks. But with time in the glass this wine open up quite well and offers plum, cherries, oak and dark chocolate. Even a some hazelnuts.
This wine has a medium body with lots of raw tannins at first. Lots of wood with some sour cherries and dark plums. Quite ok acidity and good length. The alcohol is a bit on top of everything and make this wine a bit unbalanced.

I decided to save most of this wine til the day after, and I must say it was a good thing to do.
The bouquet is much more generous the day after and offers roses, sweet cherries, chocolate, spices, more gentle oak and a hint of peony and cassis. To my delight the bouquet is more burgundian the day after. Burgundian, but with a twist.
Even in the taste the wine perform better the day after. The tannins are more soft, the alcohol is integrated in the wine and the fruit is more "alive". I must say the wine is more balanced the day after. The finish is even better the day after as well.
So my rating for this wine differs a lot between day 1 and day 2.
When popped and poured: 85 - 86p
The day after (24 h): 90 - 91p

I will buy this wine again. A perfect wine to stick away for a few years and a perfect everyday wine.

I must admit I can't figure out the blend in this wine. It is of course dominated by Nebbiolo, but there is probably Barbera and maybe even some Cabernet in it. (1645 views)
Tasted by Lilja on 8/23/2014 & rated 88 points: Bright, medium red color. The nose has just a slight touch of nebbiolo perfume, roses and jasmine. But there is also plenty of oak to cover the wine in a shroud of hazelnuts, almonds, milk chocolate and tar. It's origins exposes itself in the form of cocktail cherries and a seedy bitterness in the mouth. But still this is quite tasty. Good, generous fruit. Distinct, raw tannins and good length. Would have wanted a slightly higher acidity. This will keep good for a few years, but I wouldn't bet on it for the long run. (1530 views)

Giacomo Borgogno & Figli

Producer website

The Borgogno name represents over 250 years of history in the Barolo region, its origins dating back to 1761 with the founding of the first winery by Bartolomeo Borgogno. One of the oldest cellars in all of Piedmont, Borgogno wines have enjoyed centuries of acclaim, its Barolo selected as the wine of choice at the official dinner celebration of the Italian Unification in 1861 and again in 1886 honoring the official visit of Nicola II Romanov, Czar of Russia.

After the end of WW1, under the direction of Cesare Borgogno, the wines began to make their way abroad, establishing important markets in South America and the United States. The winery was completely renovated in 1959, and in 1967 Cesare Borgogno transformed the organization of the company to assume its current name “Giacomo Borgogno & Figli.”

Today, Giacomo Borgogno & Figli continues its legacy of producing quality Barolo, uniting tradition with innovation, based on centuries of experience. The philosophy of winemaking follows a traditional approach, allowing the Barolo to age five years before its release, three in large Slavonian oak casks and two in bottle. Borgogno is one of the very few wineries in Piedmont to boast a library collection of classic vintages, spanning more than five decades, each bottle meticulously safeguarded in the historic cellar in Barolo.

The Borgogno winery farms approximately 20 hectares (49 acres) of vineyards, located in some of the most prestigious areas in Barolo such as Cannubi, Liste, Fossati and San Pietro. In addition to the Barolo wines (classic Barolo, Barolo Liste, and the Riserva), the winery produces traditional Piedmont red wines including Dolcetto d’Alba, Barbera d’Alba, Barbera d’Alba Superiore, Langhe Nebbiolo, Langhe Freisa, and Barolo Chinato. All of the wines are produced from 100% estate-owned vineyards.

In 2008, Giacomo Borgogno & Figli was acquired by the Farinetti family. An extensive renovation of the historical cellar in Barolo was completed in 2009, and included the addition of a charming tasting room and wine shop in the heart of the famed village to welcome visitors and wine enthusiasts from around the world.

“Being slow in ones actions means having the time to truly understand things and to do them in the right way. We’ve applied this philosophy to our vineyards and our wines since 1761.”
– Elogio della Lentezza

Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is a red grape indigenous to the Piedmont region of Italy in the Northwest. The grape can also be found in other parts of the world, though they are not as respected.

Nebbiolo is often considered the "king of red wines," as it is the grape of the famed wines of Barolo DOCG, Barbaresco DOCG, and Roero DOCG. It is known for high tannins and acidity, but with a distinct finesse. When grown on clay, Nebbiolo can be very powerful, tannic, and require long aging periods to reach its full potential. When grown on sand, the grape exhibits a more approachable body with more elegant fruit and less tannins, but still has high aging potential.

"Nebbiolo" is named for the Italian word, "nebbia", which means "fog", in Italian and rightfully so since there is generally a lot of fog in the foothills of Piedmont during harvest.

Nebbiolo is a late-ripening variety that does best in a continental climate that boasts moderate summers and long autumns. In Piedmont, Nebbiolo is normally harvested in October.
