Community Tasting Notes (average 90.7 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 48 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by bg3034 on 10/28/2020 & rated 91 points: Pnp through Nuance Wine Finer. Reddish brown hue. Ripe and refreshing cherry and strawberry on the nose. On the palate, wonderful balance. Light cherry and strawberry mixed with a hint of spice. Paired very well with pesto. Really nice wine. 91+ pts. Aloha! (527 views)
Tasted by timewithwine on 4/5/2020: Gift of one bottle each to Sheets and Smiley as part of virtual tasting experiment. (311 views)
Tasted by timewithwine on 4/5/2020: What to do in the middle of a global pandemic where the watchword is social distancing? Why, hold a virtual wine tasting with friends. With only 4 bottles of this in the cellar, DDB and I stuffed a bottle in both mailboxes for the Sheets and Smileys, waited for the appointed hour, logged on and twisted off the top. For 45 minutes we struggled with technology, laughed, talked wine, politics and generally socialized from a distance. As for the wine, it was a hit. And why not, what with it versatility as a cocktail or dinner partner. (I assured the Sheets it would pair well with their grilled burgers.) Not so much “Loring Red”, this wine as more cranberry at its core and a clearness on the rim. Still very primary with a nose of cinnamon, chinese (of course) 5 spice and vanilla. Cola and black cherry join in on the attack making for a wine of exuberance. This vintage exhibits more balance than the 2012 vintage. Eventually, Lynne’s phone/iPad ran out of juice, so we all signed off. I grabbed our last bottle and served it with a dinner of cedar plank smoked salmon (prepared over the grill and not in the smoker!). 14.3% alc. A bit of sediment. Recommended. (309 views)
Tasted by BlackCatFarms on 2/16/2020: Light red. Slightly bitter, peppery, tart cherries (555 views)
Tasted by vinomex on 2/15/2020 & rated 91 points: Picked up this on sale. solid lush and refined pinot in the more cali style. (644 views)
Tasted by vinomex on 11/27/2019 & rated 92 points: Very good upon opening and gets better with some air, no need to wait. Agree with GoBlue2002 comments on 11/18. (466 views)
Tasted by GoBlue2002 on 11/18/2019 & rated 91 points: Typical Loring pinot. Luscious bright red fruit... cherry, raspberry, with hints of spice. Nice balance and bright acidity. Long finish. Not the most complex, but oh so good.

Tasted by underwds on 7/25/2019 & rated 91 points: Maroon, with already some hints of brown that kind of surprised me for a 6 year old wine. Ripe cherries and red raspberry fruit that flows into some nice baking spices and a lingering finish. Could use a bit more acid to be more food friendly, but otherwise I'm pretty happy with this. Flavors make me think I still have a few years to finish off my other two bottles, but the color has me thinking I should drink now.

11/17/2019 Decided to drink now...people get hit by a bus every day. (440 views)
Tasted by KVM on 3/11/2019: Medium colour, a slight brown cast. Intense nose of wild berries and strawberries. Very intensely flavoured, crisp, delicious and punchy. (468 views)
Tasted by yaCellar on 7/6/2018 & rated 90 points: Checks all the boxes of a central coast Pinot, with a rose nose, a deep core and sweetness throughout. Some flintiness in the finish. Lacks the dimension and refinement I’d expect from single vineyard. (727 views)
Tasted by erekose on 3/17/2018 & rated 90 points: Raspberry, cherry and vanilla come through strongly with a hint of cola. Consistent on the palette. Nice line of acidity to hold everything together and a good finish. Quite nice. (870 views)
Tasted by brianofthevine on 12/1/2017 & rated 91 points: Bright and tart red cherry, strawberry, and rhubarb fruit. Nice core of baking spice, cinnamon, with subtle earth, cola, and caramel notes. Bright acidity, medium finish. (916 views)
Tasted by Acohen on 5/22/2017 & rated 91 points: Nice rich cherry with good balance and finish (1129 views)
Tasted by mk42 on 5/15/2017 & rated 92 points: Tart, delicious rich, drink me anytime, food friendly Pinot. Blackberry and not-quite-ripe plums predominate. (1056 views)
Tasted by Dave H. on 1/1/2017 & rated 92 points: This stuff is great. Sweet raspberries and cinnamon. Borderline refreshing. Simply awesome California Pinot. (946 views)
Tasted by dase13 on 12/23/2016 & rated 92 points: Color of dark red. Scents of raspberry. Tastes of raspberry with appropriate levels of freshness and acidity. (800 views)
Tasted by jlgnml on 12/1/2016 & rated 88 points: Nice ligHt color, good flavor, overall weak in the glass. (834 views)
Tasted by GoBlue2002 on 8/24/2016 & rated 92 points: Still our favorite Loring SV pinot.
This seemed a little less rich than years past, and also made me think of Oregon due to the earth/spice/acidity.
Red ripe fruit (raspberry & cherry), earth, baking spices, and firm/vibrant acidity.
A joy from the first sip to the last for the BD price. (808 views)
Tasted by SMZ on 7/24/2016 & rated 91 points: Enjoyed it...typical Loring Pinot (853 views)
Tasted by Cholera on 7/22/2016 & rated 92 points: Surprise twist and pour. Picked up a Local Wine Merchant on their suggestion. Pleased I did. Lots of fruit, but not sweet or overpowering. Got better with time, notes of plum and raisins as well as dark cherries. Not much oak or minerallity, but still seems to have aged well.
Recommended and will buy more. (690 views)
Tasted by midtownmac on 7/21/2016: Lots of these notes are spot on. Lots of fruit (rhubarb)and baking spice. Fantastic on the nose both nights. Little thin the first night but filled out nicely on day 2. Really enjoyed this. (816 views)
Tasted by t_moderne on 6/25/2016 & rated 89 points: Twist and pour and initially tasted without food. Refrigerated and then tasted the following day bot the food and on its own.
Good vibrant purple color. Nose shows cherries and some spice.
Rich flavors of black cherries but with good acidity and nice brown spices on the finish. While a big, fruity wine, there is enough acidity in the core to help lift the wine.
Very good. (904 views)
Tasted by isaacjamesbaker on 5/6/2016 & rated 90 points: Light ruby color. Smells of tart red cherries, pomegranate and strawberries, along with rose hips, rhubarb and sweet cola. Fresh acidity on the palate, light tannins, a rich texture with 14%+ alcohol, but it stays bright. Cherry and pomegranate fruit mixes with clove, pepper, cola and red licorice. But despite the rich flavors, there's a lot of rose, clove, rhubarb and spice elements that keeps it interesting. Lovely young, but I think I'll wait another year to try the other LWC 2013 Pinots.  Tasted by khmark7 on 2/12/2016 & rated 90 points: Typical Loring style, with some nice character as noted by other tasters (mostly dark cherry & light cola). Maybe not the most dynamic Rosella's, but still a good pairing with smoked salmon and an enjoyable red. Balanced as usual. (1007 views)
Tasted by roybivens on 1/4/2016 & rated 90 points: Consistent notes from last tasting. Pomegranate nose with a smooth, velvety texture on PnP. Some spice and stems come through with air and a rich, even somewhat nicely bitter finish. Lowered score by 1 point. Enjoyable. Score [50 + 5 + 13 + 15 + 7 ] = 90 (831 views)

Pinot Noir

Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia)
Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Jura, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Romania, Switzerland, Austria, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.

Pinot Noir is one of the world's most prestigious grapes. It is very difficult to grow and thrives well in France, especially in Champagne and Burgundy. Pinot Noir thrives less in hot areas, is picky on soil, and deserves some oak storage.

Pinot Noir, or Blauburgunder / Spätburgunder in German, is a blue grapevine - and, as the German name suggests, the grape comes originally from Burgundy in France.

The grape, which thrives in calcareous soils, is used primarily for the production of red wine, and it is widely regarded as producing some of the best wines in the world. The wine style is often medium-bodied with high fruit acidity and soft tannins. It can be quite peculiar in fragrance and taste, and not least in structure - which may be why it is referred to as "The Grapes Ballerina".
Pinot Noir is also an important ingredient in sparkling wines, not least in champagne since it is fruity, has good acidity and contains relatively little tannins.
The grape is considered quite demanding to grow. The class itself consists of tightly packed grapes, which makes it more sensitive to rot and other diseases.

Pinot Noir changes quite easily and is genetically unstable. It buds and matures early which results in it often being well ripened. Climate is important for this type of grape. It likes best in cool climates - in warm climates the wines can be relaxed and slightly pickled.
In cooler climates, the wine can get a hint of cabbage and wet leaves, while in slightly warmer regions we often find notes of red berries (cherries, strawberries, raspberries, currants), roses and slightly green notes when the wine is young. With age, more complex aromas of forest floor, fungi and meat emerge.

In Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Hungary, it often produces light wines with less character. However, it has produced very good results in California, Oregon and New Zealand.

With its soft tannins and delicate aroma, it is excellent for white fish, chicken and light meat. For the stored wines you can serve small game. Classic duck breast is a matter of course, a Boeuf Burgundy and Pinot Noir are pure happiness.

Pinot Noir loses quality by over-harvesting.
Pinot Noir is prone to diseases, especially rot and mildew. Viruses cause major problems especially in Burgundy.
Pinot Noir are large round grapes with thin skins. Relatively high in alcohol content. Medium rich tannins and good with acid.
As a young person, Pinot Noir has a distinctly fruity character such as raspberries, cherries and strawberries.
A mature Pinot Noir, the taste is different. Cherry goes into plum and prune flavors. It smells of rotten leaves, coffee, moist forest floor and animal wine. This must be experienced.
In warm climates you find boiled plum, some rustic, little acid.
If the grapes are over-grown, the wine will be thin, with little color and flavor.

Rosella's Vineyard

In 1996, Gary Franscioni planted the 50-acre Rosella’s Vineyard, named for his wife, on their estate property just 1½ miles north of Garys’ Vineyard in the Santa Lucia Highlands Appellation of Monterey County. We have been sourcing grapes from this vineyard site since 2005 and believe that Rosella’s Vineyard, with Gary Franscioni’s exceptional farming practices, produces a unique wine representing the best of the Santa Lucia Highlands. Santa Lucia Highlands has proven to be a world class appellation, and we are proud to offer a wine from this great vineyard.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.
