Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 89.4 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 23 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by lifebreath on 5/8/2014 & rated 84 points: Hot hot hot. Some nice fruit pepper and spice. Vanilla and oak. But all overpowered by the alcoholic heat. (1837 views)
Tasted by Cantina Hill's on 3/18/2010 & rated 91 points: wow, still amazing, works with red wine risotto and scallops (2861 views)
Tasted by kmicho on 11/8/2009 & rated 84 points: Very disappointing at this price point. Had blind at a wine tasting of 9 people and 6 Zins - was rated last despite being most expensive. Tasting notes included: chemical, paint thinner, harsh, light berries, not complex, thin. (3064 views)
Tasted by zheem on 4/2/2009: Delicious, resolved tannins, spice and incense woods present, underwhelming finish. Overall very elegant. (3261 views)
Tasted by Mlermontov on 5/7/2008 & rated 89 points: Zin Offline; 5/6/2008-5/7/2008 (walkers): cherry, ripe, hot, but some rhoneish herbs peeking through, the finish was too short and the alc just killed me. needs time and cooler serving temp :( (3890 views)
Tasted by GA on 2/29/2008 & rated 89 points: 2/08 Dark purple - subdued fruit - polished rounded resolved tannins - pleasant - not robust or vibrant. 89 pts. 5/08 Flat fruit - awkward finish - . 86 pts. (2436 views)
Tasted by efc on 1/27/2008 & rated 89 points: Very extracted with black raspberry and blueberry with oak and acidity which helped the wine from being too extracted. It was heavy without being burdensome. A nice wine to start with. (2271 views)
Tasted by sol on 11/11/2007 & rated 93 points: Still dark purple, just starting to get some translucency at the edge. A dark fruit blast on the initial bouquet. Hints of clove, allspice, and black pepper, but the fruit really shines through. In the mouth, practically no tannins or acidity apparent, really supple and well integrated. The finish quite smooth. I don't think this is going to get any better, so drink up, but this is what zinfandel is all about! (2800 views)
Tasted by GreenDrazi on 9/21/2007 & rated 88 points: Slightly disjointed. Likely a sub-par bottle. (2631 views)
Tasted by good old ludwig van on 5/17/2007 & rated 90 points: This has a nose of cinnamon apple and other candied fruits. It also had an aspect of the bouquet I wasn't crazy about, and I can't quite put my olfactory finger on it--someone below mentioned incense. I don't think this is quite right, although I know what they're getting at--maybe what WA calls "spice box" (I know I'm always tripping over those darn things at my house). It made the bouquet a little more intriguing, although it wasn't quite my style.

Didn't decant, but opened an hour and 40 minutes before first glass. Next day had the remainder and didn't perceive a dramatic difference. (2562 views)
Tasted by skm95t on 5/16/2007 & rated 92 points: Had at a celebratory dinner with Mr and Mrs GOLV. Very different from the Summit. This is a new world fruit bomb that has exploded. Strong sweet fruit flavors of cherry, blueberries, and some sweet spice jump out of the glass. The flavors don't disappoint either carrying through the same sweet fruit with a mixture of pepper and cinnamon, the acidity is lively, the tannins are mild, and the wine is as balanced as is can be with the fruit flavor turned upto a 10. (2536 views)
Tasted by markellen.foodies@gmail.com on 4/23/2007 & rated 91 points: ZINFANDEL BYO Dinner (DUO, South Miami Avenue, Miami): Elda & Richard's other Hartford. 3rd wine in 4th flight. Good, but a little too much heat vis a vis its brethren which offered more complexity and balance. (3840 views)
Tasted by zheem on 2/28/2007: I've always liked Highwire, and IMHO the 04 is one of the best. It has flavors that I've never tasted in wine, something like the after taste of a sweet tart, and others that are more common like pie crust and tea, but it all comes together deliciously in this wine. (2542 views)
Tasted by zheem on 12/1/2006 & rated 93 points: Rich dark zin finally coming into its drinking time. Aromas are thick and juicy with smoke and spice incense. Flavor can only be described as dark, with bramble berries, cranberries, orange zest, Peychauds bitters. The finish is hard to describe, but changing and intense. This paired very well with chicken and mushrooms basted in Trader Joe's Punjabi/spinach sauce--try that with your pinot! (2742 views)
Tasted by 97mjr on 11/23/2006 & rated 93 points: Similiar in profile to the RRV. Dark fruit, bosenberry, zinberry, mint, bakers spice and chocolate on the nose. Picked up some concentration and some VA after the first 1 hour. This is a wine that needs to be opened in advance to maximize expression of components, but drinking very nicely now. Would buy more. (3024 views)
Tasted by win on 9/13/2006 & rated 88 points: Starting 11th Year at Amici (Amici Signature Italian, Carrollton, Texas): Very fruit forward, big wine that was unfined and unfiltered. Did not seem as smooth in texture as many other wines tasted tonight. 496 cases made. 86-89 (3445 views)
Tasted by wineismylife on 9/13/2006 & rated 87 points: Dallas 11th Anniversary Zinfandel Tasting (Amici's Signature Italian, Carrollton, TX): WIML87,NOWA,NOWS

Tasted September 13, 2006 at an offline so brief notes only. Opened and served immediately in a Spiegelau Authentis Magnum glass. Garnet to puple color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Dusty nose of fennel and spearmint. Flavors of red cherries, red berries and red licorice. Medium acidity, tannins and body. Drink over the short to medium term. Not as good as previous efforts in my opinion. No value recommendation. (3905 views)
Tasted by ajjar on 4/15/2006 & rated 93 points: Absolutely delicious. Vivid dark blackberry and cherry notes, surrounded by a carmelish silky tanic body. Parker's note and score is right on; 3 bottles disappeared before my eyes leading me to an immediate reorder! (3415 views)
Tasted by zheem on 3/20/2006: Dark and rich color. Aroma is spicy with cloves and allspice. Intense flavor that went well with chocolate and mushrooms. My favorite of the 2004 Hartford Zins. (3015 views)

Highwire Vineyard

On weinlagen-info

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
