Community Tasting Notes (average 93.1 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 43 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by lvjohn on 5/13/2024 & rated 93 points: Very similar impressions to the first bottle we had. This one had an intense sweet perfumed nose and a longish aftertaste. Drank across two nights and found the wine tasted fine both nights. The first night showed more elegance and the second one more power. (30 views)
Tasted by lvjohn on 11/12/2021 & rated 93 points: This is drinking very nicely right now. We decanted it and let it rest for a while, but it didn't really open much. The next day it was ready. It display a great balance between the soft, almost fruit of the Grenache and the peppery nature of the Syrah. Very, very clean with a really nice mouthfeel. The nose was that of the Grenache with a red fruit sweetness. The aftertaste was modestly long. (723 views)
Tasted by prasm on 9/21/2021 & rated 91 points: Pop and pour, consumed over 2 hours. Appearance: Clear, dark garnet - showing signs of edge bricking. Nose: Clean, medium+ intensity, developed aromas of dried cherries, blackberry, black pepper, spice, licorice, and dark earth. Palate: Clean, medium acid, medium+ tannin, medium+ intensity, medium+ body, high alcohol (15.2% abv), developed flavors of dried cherries, licorice, spice, and earthiness with long finish. Overall a very good wine showing exceptional intensity and length with very good complexity but slightly out of balance due to the high alcohol - there just isn't quite enough depth here to support 15.2% abv. All in all this is still a very enjoyable wine and those who like big bold wines will very much like this. Drink now or over the next 2 years. (709 views)
Tasted by Les Kangas on 8/6/2021 & rated 92 points: Great wine, had in Reidel Syrah glasses with bbq ribeye. I wouldn’t keep too much longer. Opened about an hour before consuming. (764 views)
Tasted by HRT on 6/19/2021: Savory with loads of red and dark berries. Lush and silky on the palate. This drinks well. (746 views)
Tasted by jaumealaska on 2/12/2021 & rated 94 points: PnP and drank over 2 days. Medium extraction. Purple. expressive nose of dark fruits with savory and mineral notes Taste is well balanced with red and dark fruits medium tannins medium acidity and a long finish. Improved on day 2. So ok to wait if one us inclined but drinking well. Lovely. (928 views)
Tasted by Les Kangas on 3/20/2020 & rated 92 points: Great wine. Opened 1/2 hour before dinner and used Venturi to pour in glasses. Not sure that was a good move. I would taste before doing that next time. Reidel Syrah glasses. (684 views)
Tasted by mvande21 on 10/18/2019 & rated 94 points: Purple. Black and red fruits, plum and spice notes. Rich and mouth coating. Great balance with smooth, long finish. Better on the second day. (661 views)
Tasted by PinotPaul on 10/16/2019 & rated 93 points: Wonderful (550 views)
Tasted by The Wine Write on 7/23/2018 & rated 92 points: Short decant, drank over 2 nights. This bottle was really structured, a dense, tannic, chewy wine. The fruit was there, but flavors were on the savory side of the spectrum. Still enjoyable, but markedly different than last year’s model. (1237 views)
Tasted by ddsolomon2000 on 3/23/2018 & rated 95 points: Had in a pinot glass to fully open all the flavors. What an unbelievable wine. (1196 views)
Tasted by The Wine Write on 11/12/2017 & rated 94 points: Opened without aerating for 20 minutes before pouring. This was a “wow” wine. Rich red fruit aromatics. Lush, mouthcoating texture. Simply delicious. One of the best wines I’ve tasted in 2017. (1090 views)
Tasted by PinotPaul on 7/8/2017 & rated 91 points: Big wonderful fruit. Still had time to improve but drinking well now. (1206 views)
Tasted by cubswinws on 9/16/2016 & rated 93 points: Really great wine and fruit forward blend with great balance (1545 views)
Tasted by jeagle on 8/8/2016 & rated 94 points: Decanted for 10 hours prior to consumption. I believe Torrin to be the most successful Paso producer in this spotty vintage. Sure, this bottle is a click or two down from what I am expecting from the immediate future vintages, but the wine still presents expressive grenache dominated fruit with richness and minerality, and elegance on the palate amidst seemingly perfect structure. (1476 views)
Tasted by cubswinws on 6/7/2016 & rated 93 points: Big wine with moderate tannins making a bit of a rough finish. Will try again on day two but would wait awhile on opening these. (1256 views)
Tasted by Loren Sonkin on 2/29/2016 & rated 92 points: Drank over two nights. A bit more open on night 2 but this still could use some time. Very much though showing the vintage. Purple in color. The nose has black raspberries, leather, black pepper and slight medicinal note. On the palate, not as lush or ripe as one might expect from this winery or vineyard. Still, nice black raspberry fruit. some depth. Thick tannins. Good acidity. Nice finish. (1579 views)
Tasted by Redguy on 1/18/2016: After a 2hr decant this was still tight and tannic but showed layers of beautifully mature black and red fruits and fresh acids supported by a dark powerful spine. Should be a beauty but needs a few years. (1298 views)

2011 Torrin James Berry Vineyard

100% James Berry Vineyard:
52% Syrah/ 48% Grenache
The Grenache comes from a 1/2 acre block below the bone rock terraces. The Syrah comes from an eastern slope that was grafted to Roussanne. A few Rousanne vines managed to survive and were harvested with the Syrah.
After a slow 5 week fermentation the wines were pressed, blended and aged as a blend for 18 months on their lees in a mix of 500L puncheons and 228L barrels.
87 cases produced.

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

James Berry Vineyard

Under the expert care of Justin Smith, James Berry Vineyard has quickly established itself as one of the premiere Rhône varietal vineyards in the state. The “Carlisle” block of James Berry Vineyard is located just below the terraced “Bone Rock” section and is planted to Syrah clones 470 and 174. Justin practices sustainable farming, using no chemical fertilizers or pesticides. And with the limestone laden soils and devigorating rootstock, the vines struggle, yielding small quantities of intensely flavored fruit.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
