Community Tasting Notes (average 93.8 pts. and median of 94 pts. in 60 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Peech on 10/20/2022 & rated 89 points: decanted 1 hour and 15 minutes after opening. Apparently fragrant some 1 hour after decanting, but by the time I tasted 2 hours after decanting this was not showing at all. A little better after 3½ hours in the decanter. Still got the tannins, with smoky, grilled meats, and some mint on the nose. Pretty disappointing. (1351 views)
Tasted by Collector1855 on 8/18/2022 & rated 94 points: 200 Burgundy Grand Crus from vintage 2000, 4-day blind tasting (Singapore): Pirate bottle. Earthy, lighter structured, elegant, fragrant, drink up, good complexity here but not top drawer. 94+ (3037 views)
Tasted by vintage_whine on 3/21/2022: Red fruit, pure, still fresh on the fruit and decent acidity, reduced, roasted/burnt meat and pepper still, verging on burning rubber. Oak still not fully integrated. Each element is clear and pure, but hasn’t developed to the point of harmonizing. Well done but misses greatness (1556 views)
Tasted by beatles on 6/13/2021 & rated 95 points: Served blind, and I took it for a top-Bordeaux of a certain age A dark wine with chocolate and tobacco, very vertical, almost majestic, still some tannins left, but drinking a point IMHO. Still a great concentration and certainly no harm in aging it further, if one prefers.

Tasted by Papies on 4/3/2021 & rated 92 points: Decanted for a good hour. Not much evolution.
5 years since we tried this last ( Papies 92) and although it definitely shows a more elegant feel but far away from what we expected from this wine. Lacked the smoky soft spicy character and generally lacked an exciting side to the level of a La Mouline. Was very good but just not La Mouline good. 92 (2481 views)
Tasted by Patrik H on 7/26/2020 & rated 95 points: No formal note, but what a wine. Brilliant display at the moment

Tasted by dnnk88 on 4/3/2020 & rated 93 points: One last dance (before CB) @ CHL: notes to come 93/94 (2260 views)
Tasted by jens.thogersen on 8/22/2019: Bör drickas snart. (2495 views)
Tasted by dbkitc on 7/1/2019 & rated 95 points: Deep ruby. Black cherry, herbs and oak spice are the main elements of this complex nose. Rich, velvety texture. Mature feel. Glorious and bold. The oak is present but an accompaniment not a cover. Not the best La La but a great wine. No harm in drinking now but will last. (95) (2262 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 5/15/2019: Acker Auction - May 2019 (Zuma in NYC): Still quite young and drinking as such. There's a hint of the oak here that is impacting my impression of the wine. It's also got a touch more alcohol than I'd like to see. I think though it's more needs some time to pull together. If you believe the 20 year theory of LaLa's (that each LaLa needs at least 20 years) and I do, than this one still has at least one more to go. There is a certain softness and 'prettiness' to the wines. I had started as a La Turque fan but I'll say the softness in the La Mouline can be quite compelling. (2656 views)
Tasted by hprphf on 5/15/2019 & rated 95 points: Acker 2019/05 (Zuma): Violet, meat, so textured, fresh and inviting. Spectacular wine. 95 (2227 views)
Tasted by MaxSiegel on 11/18/2018 & rated 95 points: My WOTD at Acker's November NYC auction. Hugely aromatic straight out of the bottle. Peppery, meaty, and floral. Very concentrated palate but without the sometimes cloying quality of riper vintages. Acidity keeps wine quite fresh. At a beautiful spot for drinking now. Much more developed than the 2001. (2457 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 5/3/2018: Hommage a DryCab - Washington Wines release; 5/3/2018-5/5/2018 (Various spots in Walla Walla): My favorite of the three (drank alongside its brothers the 2000 La Turque and La Landonne) although also the one that was most open for business at the beginning and had the least evolution in the glass. There's an elegance to this wine that comes through with the acid and the floral and the way that the meat and brine and fruit and flowers all work together. Really enjoyable. I think still going strong although was in a good drinking spot as well. (3606 views)
Tasted by KenK on 3/24/2018 & rated 94 points: Drinking quite well, loads of dark rich black smoky fruits with nice zippy finish. (2637 views)
Tasted by Aromatic on 2/18/2018 & rated 95 points: Side by side with Landonne. Super spicy aromatics smoke musk and minerals tone on the nose. Sweet cherries cassis spice and herbs good structure with very special minerals lift which makes the finish long and dry! (2676 views)
Tasted by eudora on 1/17/2017 & rated 96 points: Lala tasting (3481 views)
(3942 views)
Tasted by Nanda on 2/17/2016 & rated 95 points: Four Decades of LaLa, plus a "sneaky" Saxum (Chez Kenny): Tasted blind among 13 wines, 11 of which were LaLas. Deep concentrated ruby. Lifted but brooding and massive aromatics of black fruits, smoke, herbs and spice. The palate is medium to full bodied with a powerful yet lifted presence. Smooth black fruit is made complex by black pepper, spice and smoked meat. Fresh, long and silky in the mouth. As good as the 00 La Landonne tasted right next to this. My #3 (but in a virtual tie with my #2), Group #2. (4712 views)
Tasted by rossi.wine on 2/8/2016 & rated 93 points: Tasted next to 2000 La Landonne and La Turque. Again the most fruit driven on the nose - very ripe, almost voluptuous. Smoky, meaty, peppery. Again rich and a little sweet on the palate. Firm but round tannins, good acidity and great overall balance. Very long but on a relative basis less complex and elegant compared to the other 2000s. The most evolved and ready. 92-94 (3996 views)
Tasted by Papies on 2/8/2016 & rated 92 points: Guigal La Las Masterclass with Brett Crittenden (Handford Wines, London): Much like last time 3 year sago (Papies 91) was a bit disappointing as it showed really ripe and at times lactic. Fruit focused, a touch raisin too ,light honey and we wonder if the viognier added to this side. Both of us discussed that we would not have guessed this was a syrah in a blind tasting. The good news is that the acidity is there which would allow for ageing and hopefully some evolution but feels like this needs another 10yrs to be worthy of the name. (4543 views)
Tasted by la turque on 12/25/2015 & rated 95 points: Decanted for several hours. Needed the time. Very rich nose of cassis, smoke, bacon and some barnyard. Gorgeously balanced on the palate, with sweet fruit and lovely structure and acidity. More complexity with a couple of years will merit an even higher score. (3095 views)
Tasted by cortoncharlie on 9/21/2015 & rated 94 points: this is an elegant La Mouline just reaching its primary drinking window. Floral and little of the barnyard or meaty elements. really nice (2776 views)
Tasted by Ericsson on 5/20/2015 & rated 97 points: Dégustation GEEU chez nous (Mouline, Redigaffi, Rousseau...) (Bernex): Bouteille et bouchon en parfaite condition. Into neck. Couleur violine, impressionnante. (3228 views)
Tasted by beatles on 5/10/2015 & rated 94 points: Way, way, way to young; wood is showing, but underneath is a sexy, deeply concentrated cote-rotie with tell-tale notes if peber, bacon, dark berries & chocolate. Hard to resist, but you will be awarded if you do. (with Pacalet at CP). (2726 views)
Tasted by peterchoy on 12/29/2014 & rated 93 points: Appearance: Bright and clear, it has medium ruby color, with fading rims and legs.
Nose: Clean, with pronounced intensity aromas of floral notes of violet, black fruit such as dark cherries and blackberry, herbal notes of Chinese medicine, maturity notes of tobacco, kernel notes of coffee, animal notes of meaty and leather, oak notes of toast, sweet spice of nutmeg. The wine is developing.
Palate: Dry with medium acidity, the wine has medium tannin of smooth and integrated texture, medium in alcohol and medium (+) body, showing medium (+) intensity flavors of black fruit such as dark cherries and blackberry, herbal notes of Chinese medicine, animal notes of meaty, maturity notes of leather, kernel notes of coffee. The wine has a medium (+) finish.
Conclusion: Very good quality Cote-Rotie with a highly concentrated nose showing a good range of different aromas, from the fruit, leathery characters to the developed tobacco notes, demonstrating the capability of how well this Northern Rhone commune can be. On the palate it is well balanced, with a robust structure and good intensity, also exhibiting a fairly long finish. Overall a really wonderful wine to enjoy, ready to drink now and can further develop for another 2-3 years and can keep even longer. (3160 views)

A FAMILY HISTORY
Land with 24 centuries of history behind it, worked and preserved by three generations of winemakers with family values at their core and a commitment to an illustrious terrain that produces prestigious wines. This, in a nutshell, is the Maison Guigal. Right from the beginning the motto, “No Pains No Gains” underpins the promise made to Etienne Guigal. A commitment to work together to follow in his footsteps, to communicate the family’s passion and create so many emotions. Today, Marcel and Philippe, along with their wives, are the guardians of this exceptional domain which combines history, devotion and a sense of togetherness. A breath of inspiration for generations to come.

CÔTE-RÔTIE
1
Planted on slopes by the Romans 24 centuries ago, this illustrious vineyard is made up of the Côte Brune, upstream of the Reynard and the Côte Blonde which is downstream. Planted almost exclusively with Syrah, the Côte Brune produces a powerful, intense wine. Thanks to a dash of Viognier which compliments the Syrah, the Côte Blonde is more subtle. There is a charming legend attached to this appellation and the Château d’Ampuis: “the sire of this place had two daughters, one with hair as dark as the night and the other blonde like a field of wheat. When they got married he endowed each with two of his best slopes. This is how we inherited the Côte Brune and the Côte Blonde”

CONDRIEU
2
With its steep terraces which plunge towards the Rhône, this vineyard is planted solely with Viognier. A rare grape varietal imported by the Greeks at the beginning of our era, combined with granite soils its naturally complex character produces a unique white wine with a yellow golden hue and intense and subtle notes of delicate apricot and white peach.

SAINT-JOSEPH
3
Enjoyed at the table of kings, this illustrious wine’s name hails back to the 16th Century and the Jesuit monks of Tournon. The reds are made from Syrah and the whites from Marsanne and Rousanne. These grape varieties grown on a South to South East facing steeply sloped vineyard with granite soils produce elegant, luscious wines.

HERMITAGE
4
A prestigious appellation since ancient times, it is named after a 13th Century hermit who sought redemption by devoting himself to prayer and the cultivation of vines. Enjoyed by the Russian Court and the great and the good of Europe, this rich and powerful wine with intense aromas is produced from Syrah for the reds and Marsanne and Roussanne for the whites.

CROZES-HERMITAGE
5
A typical wine of the northern Rhône, Crozes-Hermitage benefits from warm pebbly soils with good drainage. This is a vast appellation partially planted on slopes. The reds are produced from Syrah and the whites from Marsanne and Rousanne. The red wine is deep ruby in colour, full of savoury flavour and well-balanced. The white wines are dry and aromatic with floral notes.

CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE
6
These soils are composed of calcareous round pebbles and the vineyards are swept by the Mistral winds and warmed by the Provencal sunshine, resulting in wines with unmistakable flavours of the South. These southern wines are produced from a complex blend of the 13 grape varieties of the appellation with Grenache as the main component. They are complex with soft and powerful tannins and are characterised by a generous and strong personality.

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

Northern Rhône

Guide to the wines and appellations of the Northern Rhone Valley -

The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)

Regional History:
Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.

Côte-Rôtie

Guide to Cote Rotie - Read about the Northern Rhone Valley

• The Appellation cover three communes - Saint-Cyr-sur-Rhône, Ampuis and Tupin-Semons - on the right Rhône river bank, within the Rhône "département".

• Soils : In the northern part of the vineyard, the Côte Brune, consists of extremely steep, terraced slopes of ferruginous mica schists which are covered with schist sand (arzel). The Côte Blonde has a varied geology with gneiss and granite predominating at the most southern side of the appellation.

• Climate : tempered continental. Dry, hot summers and frequent rainfalls during the other seasons. History : one of the oldest vineyards in France, first developed by the Romans. It is said that during the Middle Ages, "The Seigneur de Maugiron" bequeathed a hillside to each of his daughters, one was brunette and the other fair. Thus, were born the names of "Côte Brune" and "Côte Blonde".

• Area planted : 230 hectares (568 acres), for an annual production of 8,400 hectoliters (93,333 cases). Authorized maximum yield is 40 hectoliters/hectare (2,3 US tons/acre).

• Grape Varieties : Syrah (80% minimum). An addition of up to 20% of Viognier grapes in the crop is allowed.
