| Community Tasting Notes (average 90.6 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 14 notes) - hiding notes with no text | | Tasted by Milos on 8/24/2023 & rated 91 points: Colour and nose of very much where they should be, medium garnet with roses, tar and herbal notes. Palate still show tannins, very fine, and very good balance and length. Drinking well now but will go several years more. (151 views) | | Tasted by twfwinedude on 5/24/2023: This was just absolutely superb! Showing berry and plum fruit, some earthiness, pencil lead mineral note, slight anise. The mouthfeel is luscious with a long finish. We purchased this at the property in October, 2012. I wish that we had bought more. (283 views) | | Tasted by djarcara on 2/5/2021 & rated 88 points: Garnet color. Very perfumed nose. Medium body. Upon first taste the wine was very sharp and tannic having fruit that was far too restrained. But, after about an hour from decanting a roundness began to emerge and the fruit came much more to the fore. Flavors of dark cherry, strawberry, licorice, clove, and cinnamon were prominent. It still had a slight astringency to the finish. Not as elegant and balanced as other bottles. Maybe bottle variation or it has close down a bit from my last tasting of a year ago?? This is a producer that I typically very much enjoy. Not bad, but not up to par. (649 views) | | Tasted by djarcara on 3/18/2020 & rated 93 points: Deep granite color. Fragrant floral nose. Firm, but not overpowering tannins with a solid streak of acidity. Very balanced fruit. Flavors of dark cherry, blackberry, tar, mushrooms, and cinnamon. Elegant. Drinking well now, but has another 10 years ahead of it. Lovely. (789 views) | | Tasted by Not647f on 1/25/2020: Really behind getting notes in. This was the second red wine of the night and third overall at the January Triple Date. We had a lot of foods with rich sauces or bright sauces, but we also needed something with lighter touch as we had non meat dishes as well. The restaurant decanted this, although the waiting time was hardly enough to get any oxygen into it beyond the act of pouring and swirling. But no matter, this was knock out good. As good as I remembered from a visit to the maker in May 2014. There's nothing here that isn't just what you expect from great traditional Barbaresco. Pure aromas of roses and tar, starting to morph into secondaries of mushroom, dried leaves, and all the savory notes that go with those. Silken texture. Not sure why this was downgraded or in any way disappointing. Distribution in the US is still quite limited, and the price is higher than it should be. In Europe, they also bottle a Nebbiolo from younger vines for earlier drinking--although it's quite age-worthy, as a vertical poured for us showed. That would be a spectacular bargain to bring back. (848 views) | | Tasted by winemaker on 11/5/2019 & rated 91 points: Tasty. I bought this because of AG's 93 point rating. Disappointed to see the downward revision to 87. Can I get my $$ back? Just kidding. This wine is pretty decent. A little lacking in concentration. A bit of a pruney note on the finish which may be what AGs 2nd review noticed. Not good QPR. (832 views) | | Tasted by Arnaud Cbn on 10/12/2019 & rated 92 points: Deep ruby colour. Nose is elegant: mint, fennel, licorice, rose petal, blackcurrant. Palate: the tannins are integrated but astringent on the finish. Full bodied. Still young. (832 views) | | Tasted by JohanPe on 8/10/2018 & rated 90 points: Dark nose of cherries, menthol, dried herbs, rosehip, worn leather and coffee beans. Very earthy and medicinal. The palate is full but also with some elegance and transparency. Good acidity and fine somewhat polished tannins. Still on the darker side with the medicinal note in the foreground together with some dashes of balsamico. Very good. (1070 views) | | Tasted by djarcara on 10/29/2017 & rated 92 points: Medium body. Purple brick color. Very fragrant nose of rose petals, cola, and cassis. Traditional Barbaresco with balanced fruit and strong tannins. Dark cherry, blackberry, plum, and leather with a steely minerality. Needs more time for the tannins to integrate further. Minimum 2+ years with at least another 10 years of life left . (1018 views) | | Tasted by Keith Levenberg on 4/15/2015: This is the younger-vine Barbaresco vineyard from Cascina delle Rose, which the reviewers describe as the more elegant and accessible of the two. That makes me a bit afraid to brave the Rio Sordo, as this started out fairly tough and the most Barolo-like of the handful of '11 Barbarescos I've opened to date, with its fairly broad-shouldered scale, muscular tannin, and crimson-brick color. There is some gloss to the fruit and a plush concentration that makes it drinkable even through the structure, though the flavors are somewhat on the autumnal side with nothing primary left, orchard fruit with more skin than flesh (apple skins, cherry skins) and a touch of leatheriness too. (7941 views) | | Tasted by Robert Pavlovich on 4/3/2015: Engaging nose, slightly medicinal, with a menthol note above the ripe fruit, tar, and florals. The palate was much more of a beast, the acidity cuts deep here (without flashing as obviously high). Together with plenty of blood, iron, and tannic power, there are no nods toward accessibility present in the winemaking. Perhaps in 10-20 years. Opened in the morning, poured a few ounces in a glass to let sit all day, then poured into decanter to serve with dinner. (1828 views) |

| Cascina delle Rose Producer websiteNebbioloNebbiolo is a red grape indigenous to the Piedmont region of Italy in the Northwest. The grape can also be found in other parts of the world, though they are not as respected.
Nebbiolo is often considered the "king of red wines," as it is the grape of the famed wines of Barolo DOCG, Barbaresco DOCG, and Roero DOCG. It is known for high tannins and acidity, but with a distinct finesse. When grown on clay, Nebbiolo can be very powerful, tannic, and require long aging periods to reach its full potential. When grown on sand, the grape exhibits a more approachable body with more elegant fruit and less tannins, but still has high aging potential.
"Nebbiolo" is named for the Italian word, "nebbia", which means "fog", in Italian and rightfully so since there is generally a lot of fog in the foothills of Piedmont during harvest.
Nebbiolo is a late-ripening variety that does best in a continental climate that boasts moderate summers and long autumns. In Piedmont, Nebbiolo is normally harvested in October.
