Tasted by chcook on 12/22/2019: Brief note.
this is slightly oxidized and i don't think will remain bright for long.
good now - drink up (381 views)
Tasted by short and confused on 7/4/2018 & rated 91 points: I was blown away by my first bottle of Pichler and this one was a bit of a let down. Very good wine but did not bend my mind like the first. Rod Stewart did warn me- the first cut is the deepest. Good peach, apricot, ginger, honey and stone on the nose- reminiscent of chenin. Powerful, full bodied structure with plummy fruit, lemon and salty minerality. (698 views)
Tasted by yofog on 10/25/2014: Beautifully taut with incredible green herbal complexity and serious grip on the finish. (1024 views)

Smaragd

Wikipedia about Smaragd (german)
Google translation in English of the German Wikipedia about Smagard

From what I understand, these wines (very ripe, dry, late-harvest, etc.) were going to be designated Honivogl (after a kind of bird found in or near the vineyards, meaning 'honey bird'. However, the Honivogl family was involved in the wine trade in Austria and objected that this would cause confusion and weakening of their trademark. Another creature was therefore selected (the green lizard called Smaragd) to be the mascot (sort of ) for this kind of wine in the Wachau. Lower Austria Wine Region

Lower Austria isn't "southern" Austria, but rather northeastern. It derives its name from its downriver location on the Danube River, which flows from west to east.
