Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 87.6 pts. and median of 88 pts. in 31 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Sperls on 3/11/2024 & rated 85 points: Yellow brownish and over the hill and oxidized but undeniably Chenin with honeyed waxy fruit shining through the nutty oxidation. While heading downhill, this was still drinkable if you like the oxidized style and could have passed for a natural wine of that type in a blind tasting. Not what it should have been but still a bit interesting. (98 views)
Tasted by AudunG on 5/6/2023 & rated 88 points: Golden yellow. Typical Chenin Blanc aromas with honey, citrus and chalky minerals. Rather tart and skinny for a Papillon. I have had a few 1999's that were better. (234 views)
Tasted by Rich.Herbs on 7/29/2015: Dark yellow, some minerality and acid, but lacks the notes of honey that I remembered. Perhaps over the hill. (2400 views)
Tasted by MWiking on 8/30/2013 & rated 84 points: självklart ett bra vin men inte min stil. för oxiderad. (4067 views)
Tasted by FamilyLarsson on 8/29/2013 & rated 82 points: Nej, det har var inte men grej. Överekade oxiderade toner (3713 views)
Tasted by Patrik H on 8/29/2013 & rated 82 points: On the nose lime, oak very oxidized. Very light but to much.
Not my cup of tea. (3886 views)
Tasted by stiang on 1/21/2012 & rated 89 points: Fantastisk match til rødbet og chevre-salat. Voks, tropisk, lime, mineralitet. ok lengde. (5099 views)
Tasted by Dapz on 8/26/2011 & rated 93 points: Beautiful (3435 views)
Tasted by cannym on 2/6/2011 & rated 89 points: Bright golden colour, like liquid sun. Nose of honeysuckle, lime and melon. All these in the mouth too, but honey not honeysuckle of course. Hay and something nicely bitter. Minerality and fairly high acidity. Clean and fresh still, good length. Maybe lacking a little in depth or concentration. Nice balance, fine flavours. Very enjoyable wine, some depth and a lot of originality. (2592 views)
Tasted by stiang on 11/14/2010 & rated 89 points: Utrolig mineralsk, konsentrert og lang. Erketypisk chenin blanc. En vin jeg virkelig koser meg med - et herlig alternativ til all denne rieslingen og chardonnayen man tyller i seg til vanlig... (2955 views)
Tasted by Badfish on 2/21/2010 & rated 87 points: Pale yellow gold in the glass. Delicate and restrained on the nose with honeysuckle, minerals, and fresh lime. The aromas are really subtle and have tones of sweetness, flowers, and minerals. The palate is also delicate with subtle sweet fruit, fresh acidity, and round mouthfeel. The flavors include citrus, wax, melon, hay, and some subtle spices on the finish. This is a zingy but supple dry wine that has tremendous elegance and restraint. With a little air and warmth this does start to pick up some honeyed tone and minerality to the fruit. Seems to lack density but you have to like the elegance and juiciness exhibited by this wine. (2770 views)
Tasted by slanum on 9/28/2009: A glutton for punishment, I opened another bottle. The last one was an anomaly (or was it the taster...). A good, not great, vintage, this bottle displayed lemon, verbena, and wet wool. Baumard's 'Papillon' seems to have a distinctive profile of aromas and flavors; I think I could identify it blind in most vintages. (2584 views)
Tasted by slanum on 8/5/2009: Just awful. Identifiably Chenin-like aromas and flavors had turned somewhat acrid. The color was fine, the cork appeared in good condition, but this was undrinkable. Down the drain. (2642 views)
Tasted by BailliSacks on 6/28/2009 & rated 83 points: Sharp, tasty but monotonic, did not finish the bottle. (2555 views)
Tasted by hutch on 6/13/2009 & rated 85 points: This didn't really show any better then the regular '99 Savennieres. Bright acidity. Not impressed at first, but then find myself enjoying drinking it, maybe because it remains well balanced? (2599 views)
Tasted by BailliSacks on 11/27/2008 & rated 89 points: My first Savennieres. Crisp fruit on nose and a touch of sweetness on front of palate (unripe plum), then a heavy oily body, finishing long and dry and mineral. The body is reminiscent of a well-aged Burgundy Chard, slightly buttery and heavy. Certainly heavier and more substantial than I'd have expected from a Loire white. Quite a treat. (2597 views)
Tasted by Joe Petto on 3/5/2008 flawed bottle: This wine peaked and was highly oxidized. Tasted at times more like sherry than wine. The sugars have given out and no fruit remained (2940 views)
Tasted by br on 2/4/2008: a bit less friendly than the last bottle...more angles and sharp edges. still has a beautiful, long honeyed finish but some of the elegance of the prior bottle was missing. still, tough to beat this for value and quality. (2818 views)
Tasted by Paul D on 10/27/2007 & rated 85 points: At the White Hart Inn, Nayland, Suffolk - £25 from the list. Medium straw yellow. Medium dry, full bodied with lots of honey and minerals, quite intense, lingering finish with a few citrusy hints. Could do with a bit more acidity to balance the residual sugar. Good/very good. (3166 views)
Tasted by win on 8/2/2007 & rated 90 points: Very nice wine with background aromas of honey, yet a fairly crisp finish. (3093 views)
Tasted by win on 7/13/2006 & rated 90 points: Carrollton, TX OL (Amici's): More of a light golden yellow with background scents of honey. Very refined acidity results in a nicely crisp wine. Tasted single blind at an OL. (4282 views)
Tasted by wineismylife on 7/12/2006 & rated 90 points: WIML90,NOWA,WS90

Tasted July 12, 2006 at an offline. Opened and served immediately in a Spiegelau Authentis Weiss Wein glass. Light yellow color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of grass, orange, lime, grapefruit and maybe even some nutmeg. Light flavors of grapefruit, maybe some gooseberry and a little orange. Light to medium acidity, light to medium bodied. Drink now. Based on the local retail price I paid of $21.59 I’d say the value here is recommended for immediatel consumption. (3583 views)
Tasted by winefool on 7/1/2006 & rated 91 points: Light yellow/green. Rich green apple but also deep mineral aroma. Big tight yellow fruit with hints of bitter. 7/06 (3675 views)
Tasted by br on 4/29/2006: I love this wine! Still young , but delicious, with notes of fresh honey, flowers, citrus, hay. Smooth and silky in the mouth with a mile long honey finish. In my book, Savennieres is right up there with white burgs (at least today!). (3849 views)

Savennières

Savennières is a small, relatively well-known Loire Valley region producing wines made from the chenin blanc grape.

They are not conventionally fruity, and benefit from extensive aging.

Savennieres often have smells like white truffles and animal notes, even when young. They can last for a tremendous amount of time, and some people mistake the evolved aromas after 10-20 years with oxidization, but I have yet to taste an oxidised chenin blanc, since the amount and type of acidity (many g/l and tartaric) preserve the fruit in a much more effective way than e.g. chardonnay.
