Community Tasting Notes (average 90 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 41 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Peter Spijker on 4/2/2024 & rated 89 points: Light, elegant, fresh acidity, a bit short and simple on the finish, cream, raspberry. (447 views)
Tasted by bjbu on 3/29/2024 & rated 89 points: Vosne-Romanée tasting (Utregs Wijnhuis): From 90 year old vines; aged in 40% new oak. Grapes taken from Pré de la Folie, Les Champs Gourdin, La Colombière.

Intensity medium. Strawberry, red cherry, forest floor. Acidity medium. Tannins medium(+). Finish medium. (441 views)
Tasted by ThijsV on 3/29/2024 & rated 89 points: Vosne Romanee tasting (Utregs Wijnhuis): Medium(-?) intensity on the nose with forest floor, red fruit, cranberry, a bit more fruit with some time. Medium+ acidity, medium tannins, medium finish. 88-89

A bit simple. From 90 year old vines, 40% new wood. A bit disappointed with todays showing (310 views)
Tasted by oxwombat on 10/28/2023 & rated 92 points: Opened in HK. P&P and slowly enjoyed.

This was wonderful - light and airy and red fruit dominant upon opening, but this slowly gained some weight and the fruit spectrum got a bit darker. After about 1.5 hours of air it also got a bit sweeter as well, and settled into a lovely balance. Really enjoyable wine, drinking extremely well at the moment and what I would call a benchmark village Vosne.

Will keep at this level for a few years at least, but wouldn't hesitate to drink up if you enjoy freshness and clear fruit. Amazing treat from M - thanks for sharing! (1356 views)
Tasted by KVM on 9/12/2023: Lovely fragrance and a purity on the palate. (1264 views)
Tasted by lovanc@outlook.com on 11/25/2022: Bright red fruit but fairly tight for the first hour or so. Spice notes started to appear after a while making it a much more interesting wine. (651 views)
Tasted by B Paul on 10/8/2022: Really in the zone. Cherry and spice, everything integrated. So good, but no rush. (1745 views)
Tasted by BenBlu on 8/23/2021 & rated 91 points: Dense red and black fruit with a touch of violets and umami. Feels less ready than the wonderful drinking 2012 vintage (or 09 also) but qualitatively very good also but feels like the acidity needs to tame down a bit - the stuffing is definitely here. Drink 2023+ (3115 views)
Tasted by JOsgood on 7/31/2021: Drinking well but I preferred this upon release. Fully mature now. (2703 views)
Tasted by MJReb on 11/17/2020 & rated 90 points: From my Zalto Bourgogne glass: Beautiful nose of mainly black fruit with a lot of spice, on the palate less intoxicating, some green elements, drinking well, nose was at 93, palate at 89. (3010 views)
Tasted by mchern02 on 8/16/2020 & rated 91 points: PnP but definitely benefitting from time in the glass.

Attractive and inviting nose with blue fruit, spicy tones, earth and wet oak and cedar. Body has excellent lift with soft and linear structure, tart raspberry tones tight and slightly acerbic tannins; medium plus finish.

Will wait a year to try again and decant next bottle (3114 views)
Tasted by Tony Ling on 5/1/2020 & rated 94 points: PNP into Zalto Burgundy glass ("Fruit" day): Bright ruby with purplish tints.

Elegant wild petite red and blue berry fruits. Very airy and ethereal indeed. For me this has the signature smoke + dried leafy + sous bois notes from the vintage. This is delivering good depth with secondary notes on top layer with the underlying fruits. Reductive notes upfront that blew off quickly. One of the top nose from Burgundies at this age in my view.

Great follow-through on the palate especially on the more detailed blue / black berry fruity flavours with peels providing extra depth and energy. Super suave tannins here. A complete wine already.

This is noticeably 'better' overall in terms of depth and layers of nose and flavours than the last bottle tried about 1 year ago. Will clearly be an even greater bottle in another 5-10 years, but I always believe the 2013 vintage burgundies in the hands of top producer would be amazingly enjoyable at relatively early age.

93-94 points to me.

1 hour upon opening, 1/3 left: Retaining its characters per above as expected. I would retain this at 93-94 points, but overall more towards 94 points now for its drinkability. (3127 views)
Tasted by JVC_BE on 1/2/2020 & rated 80 points: Very vibrant - I will wait a few years for the next bottle so that it can calm down a bit (2590 views)
Tasted by Corgi on 12/31/2019 & rated 92 points: At this moment, showing better than the 2015 with less extraction. Balanced, smooth and supple. (2349 views)
Tasted by Paul D on 4/21/2019 & rated 90 points: 1/6, good cork.
Pale/medium ruby/purple, pale rim. Youthful nose - bilberry, touch of blackcurrant, florals, a sense of freshly tilled soil. Medium bodied, elegant, fine-boned, pure dark fruits, touch of liquorice, firm tannins, some black pepper on the good length finish. Excellent. (3127 views)
Tasted by B Paul on 4/13/2019: Lighter in body than other recent vintages, but otherwise typical profile here. Red fruit with spice and quite delicious. Has some more room to run, but really good now. (2464 views)
Tasted by apg23 on 3/15/2019 & rated 88 points: Bright red fruit on the nose. A touch of pepper, lots of tannins and acidity. Pleasing to drink. (2525 views)
Tasted by Tony Ling on 2/15/2019 & rated 92 points: PNP into Zalto Burgundy glass (“Root” day): Bright pale ruby to the eyes.

On the nose freshly crushed red berry fruits like raspberries and strawberries infused with distinctive dried leaves like floral notes, and tea like herbal notes from this vintage. Touch of spice and fur-like animale notes that make the liquid ever so alluring.

Racy acidity and highly minerality that keep the wine refreshing. A little lean on palate and a nicely clean finish. To me, these reflect the vintage and “terroir” well without sacrificing any of the delicacies I’ve come to expect from this great producer.

What a lovely bottle. 92-93 points to me. (2454 views)
Tasted by Barry Rothof on 12/16/2018: Ripe red cherry fruit of striking purity on the nose and palate with impressive control and balance underpinned with appealing juicy tannins and fresh acidity. Harmonious and very attractive! (2810 views)
Tasted by vinkeger on 11/24/2018: For en nese. Dyp og nyansert, meget elegant nese av røde, modne frukter, kalkete mineralitet, meget floral, samt asiatiske krydder. Lys, delikat frukt. Utrolig sjarmerende. Kvalitetsmessig i premier cru land. Saftig frukt i munnen med et nydelig bitt. Lett vin i munnen med en herlig fruktkonsentrasjon. Så lett på tå og likevel intens. Kongevin (2625 views)
Tasted by Kriz on 10/12/2018 & rated 90 points: I love it. This is showing it's beauty in it's youth. Not the nose but the palate. The present bitters and acidity is so nice. Lively and fresh. But very tasty and full of fresh pressed purple fruit. (2273 views)
Tasted by fontaine on 7/24/2018 & rated 90 points: Vin jeune, épicé, sur les fruits noirs. Belle texture. Dans un registre assez costaud. Gagne à être attendu. (2404 views)
Tasted by UTPK on 7/11/2018: Opulent nose, deeper and more complex than I remember a year ago. The palate is just a little bit tight though, this might start to shut down a little? Clear tannins and massive minerality on the finish (2537 views)
Tasted by Fred_Bo on 7/8/2018 & rated 91 points: Very good. Needs more time in cellar to be great (2346 views)
Tasted by Jeremy Holmes on 4/4/2018: This has a very pretty nose of violets, black cherry and spiced plum. In the mouth it is velvety and there's excellent depth of flavour. Just below the flesh is stony minerality and it has great drive and really fans out on the finish. (2886 views)

Pinot Noir

Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia)
Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Jura, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Romania, Switzerland, Austria, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.

Pinot Noir is one of the world's most prestigious grapes. It is very difficult to grow and thrives well in France, especially in Champagne and Burgundy. Pinot Noir thrives less in hot areas, is picky on soil, and deserves some oak storage.

Pinot Noir, or Blauburgunder / Spätburgunder in German, is a blue grapevine - and, as the German name suggests, the grape comes originally from Burgundy in France.

The grape, which thrives in calcareous soils, is used primarily for the production of red wine, and it is widely regarded as producing some of the best wines in the world. The wine style is often medium-bodied with high fruit acidity and soft tannins. It can be quite peculiar in fragrance and taste, and not least in structure - which may be why it is referred to as "The Grapes Ballerina".
Pinot Noir is also an important ingredient in sparkling wines, not least in champagne since it is fruity, has good acidity and contains relatively little tannins.
The grape is considered quite demanding to grow. The class itself consists of tightly packed grapes, which makes it more sensitive to rot and other diseases.

Pinot Noir changes quite easily and is genetically unstable. It buds and matures early which results in it often being well ripened. Climate is important for this type of grape. It likes best in cool climates - in warm climates the wines can be relaxed and slightly pickled.
In cooler climates, the wine can get a hint of cabbage and wet leaves, while in slightly warmer regions we often find notes of red berries (cherries, strawberries, raspberries, currants), roses and slightly green notes when the wine is young. With age, more complex aromas of forest floor, fungi and meat emerge.

In Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Hungary, it often produces light wines with less character. However, it has produced very good results in California, Oregon and New Zealand.

With its soft tannins and delicate aroma, it is excellent for white fish, chicken and light meat. For the stored wines you can serve small game. Classic duck breast is a matter of course, a Boeuf Burgundy and Pinot Noir are pure happiness.

Pinot Noir loses quality by over-harvesting.
Pinot Noir is prone to diseases, especially rot and mildew. Viruses cause major problems especially in Burgundy.
Pinot Noir are large round grapes with thin skins. Relatively high in alcohol content. Medium rich tannins and good with acid.
As a young person, Pinot Noir has a distinctly fruity character such as raspberries, cherries and strawberries.
A mature Pinot Noir, the taste is different. Cherry goes into plum and prune flavors. It smells of rotten leaves, coffee, moist forest floor and animal wine. This must be experienced.
In warm climates you find boiled plum, some rustic, little acid.
If the grapes are over-grown, the wine will be thin, with little color and flavor.

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio

Vosne-Romanée

Vosne Romanée is one of the smallest wine villages in Burgundy. The wines possess diverse characteristics, but they can generally be considered to have complexity and longevity beyond nearly all other wines in the world. The village has six grand crus: Romanée-Conti, La Romanée, La Tâche, Richebourg, Romanée-Saint-Vivant, and La Grande Rue. While there is monopoly control of four of the six grand crus, the village has at least forty growers sharing its vineyards. The top premier cru includes Les Malconsorts, Cros Parantoux, Les Chaumes, and Clos des Réas.
