Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 92.5 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 71 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Night Train on 1/20/2024 & rated 91 points: Nose was a little shy, but it eventually emerged - smelled the way a syrah is supposed to smell. Blue fruits, pepper, and grilled meats. Black and blue fruits on the palate. Fairly rich, with a solid finish. Holding up well, although I would prefer a little more structure (probably better a year or two ago). (557 views)
Tasted by Ridgerunner on 6/10/2023 & rated 93 points: An absolute gem from Carlisle. You have to wonder about the imagination and the reach of Mike Officer, Joel and Morgan Peterson to find all of these different sources for wines. (651 views)
Tasted by btock on 3/18/2023 & rated 91 points: Bolder style, just starting to unfurl. Tighter purple fruit core, some grapefruit pith notes on the approach. Very satisfying. (690 views)
Tasted by Backdoctor on 3/13/2023 & rated 89 points: fruit is light on the palate. This is at the end of it's window (684 views)
Tasted by bablues on 2/18/2023 & rated 89 points: Did not take detailed notes. A bit too jammy for me. Others loved it (794 views)
Tasted by SouthernStateofMind on 4/17/2022: Decanted three (3) hours. Wish I had more of this. Alas only a single bottle purchase. Wonderful accompaniment to roast lamb and root vegetables. A warm panoply of combined blue and black fruits hit the nose straight away with hints of black pepper and sous bois. Weighted on the palate with remarkable depth, high abv. is deftly cloaked by pronounced flavors of blackberry and warm spice. Active acidity present demonstrates sufficient lift to carry evenly distributed finish. Lovely stuff. (975 views)
Tasted by rdf58 on 3/5/2022 & rated 93 points: Fully mature but still fresh with lively acidity. Nice core of dark berry fruit and soft, integrated tannins. 15.7% ABV is well concealed. Still going strong on day 2. (1024 views)
Tasted by cobystilp on 11/28/2020 & rated 89 points: Dark and gamey. (1742 views)
Tasted by Les Raisins Du Aron on 11/1/2020 & rated 93 points: With a 1 hour decant, I was a little disappointed with this one. It was delicious but I didn't get the wide range of flavors I was hoping for. WELL, after another couple of hours, it really opened up. There are bold berry flavors, some spice and charcoal, and now an excellent finish. I think SLH syrah is a sleeper AVA. (1626 views)
Tasted by bablues on 3/25/2020 & rated 94 points: This is a stellar wine that could easily sell for 3-4 times the current price. I picked this up on winebid for $25 and it blew away most of the other wines that i opened this week that were multiples the price. The nose is more subtle then the palate giving off aromas of wood-chips, black fruits and some hints of black pepper. The taste is more explosive with blue/black fruits with a good balance of acidity with a strong, though not that long of a finish. I'd say this would drink beautifully for 5 years. This won't have the long life of the major central coast Syrah's but it is right up there is flavors right now. (1817 views)
Tasted by jvphoto on 12/19/2019 & rated 94 points: Opened and started drinking half an hour later. Crushed berries, wild flowers, mint, redwood aromas. Nice acidity with silky tanins - blueberries, red plums, black fruit, iron, charcoal. Wonderful SLH Syrah. (1940 views)
Tasted by BigTex22 on 11/27/2019: This is high octane stuff, but well balanced. Blue fruit, aromatic, silky, and medium long finish. This drinks well now, but should hold steady or even improve over next several years. (1794 views)
Tasted by ravbik on 11/17/2019 & rated 95 points: Complex well balanced Syrah. Well done Mike Officer! (1496 views)
Tasted by mwrock on 7/4/2019 & rated 94 points: Needed time 30-45 to open up. Nose is big red fruit to start, not to sweet, but very pleasant. Taste is smooth, cherry and raspberry with light tannin and light white pepper. Finish is medium and smooth with a light dry taste on the end of the tongue. Had with a Porterhouse steak, potato and grilled Jalapeños, perfect match. Enjoy (1638 views)
Tasted by Neras on 6/22/2019 & rated 95 points: Dark red. Fruity. Dense and serious with good freshness. Great. (1479 views)
Tasted by WineCPA on 3/5/2019 & rated 93 points: This needs a little decant but then it sings. Ready to drink with gobs of raspberry, black cherry. The alcohol still shows but it's definitely enjoyable now. Not tannic but medium acidity. (1763 views)
Tasted by TC16 on 12/26/2018: In a good place right now. Unlike some of the '13 Syrah I've had this was much more in balance without astringency. Tasty. (1805 views)
Tasted by Mtnmd1 on 11/17/2018 & rated 93 points: Excellent balance of fruit/tannin/acidity. Even mod long finish. In its sweet spot (1723 views)
Tasted by ogres3 on 8/19/2018 & rated 93 points: I enjoyed this more than the Papa's Block. Gave it some air. Opaque. Average but fruit forward nose. Very rich plush black and blue fruit that is quite smooth and complex. Lingers. Excellent finish. (1986 views)
Tasted by andrewdodd86 on 7/10/2018 & rated 95 points: Dark Blackberry. Chocolate, white pepper, some floral aspects. Med tannins, but they’ve rounded out nicely. 2018-2025+ (2083 views)
Tasted by pakabear on 6/4/2018 & rated 94 points: Even better than the last bottle, incredibly smooth, dark cherry, raspberry, cinnamon, vanilla, roasted meats, black pepper, great balance. This is very good as a PnP, drink up over the next 3 years. I don't think this will get any better. (2038 views)
Tasted by ogres3 on 2/11/2018 & rated 93 points: Excellent wine in a good drinking window. Probably benefits from some air. Served at a wine tasting so only had a half a glass. Ripe lush chewy dark fruit - complex, integrated, with a big finish. (2063 views)
Tasted by pakabear on 1/10/2018 & rated 93 points: PnP and ready to drink, raspberry, ripe cherry, very smooth, medium acidity, this is very good right now. I’d drink up over the next 3 years. (2140 views)
Tasted by Mattshank on 12/1/2017 & rated 92 points: 2 1/2 hour decant (mag decanter). Nose: Very floral, earthy and spicy with vanillan traces and lots of blue fruits. Palate: Spicy dark fruits with scorched earth and a soft, medium long finish. More soft than I expected given how primary Sierra Mar often is. Next bottle will either be a slow ox or very minimal decant. Good stuff, and as others have noted, hides the big 15.7% alc levels very well. (2065 views)
Tasted by pgm on 11/5/2017 & rated 91 points: Shows as more of a cool climate Syrah with lifted aromas and flavors of currant and fresh berry and herbal notes. Doesn’t show its alcohol. Ready to drink. (2040 views)

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
