Community Tasting Notes (average 90.6 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 45 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by wmccone54 on 9/22/2023: Mature. Similar to my experience in August 2021, lots of tomato leaf and fading red fruits. Generally disappointing at only 10 years. Drink now. (319 views)
Tasted by brianakrin on 8/3/2023 & rated 91 points: Drinking well(dw). Good structure with sweet fruit . (355 views)
Tasted by Ep5g on 9/30/2022: Outstanding! Wish I had more (898 views)
Tasted by wmccone54 on 8/28/2021 & rated 92 points: Enjoyed over two consecutive days, vacuumed sealed in between. Seems to be in the later stages of development and entering into maturity: medium plus aromas and flavors of tomato leaf, burned caramel, juicy black and red licorice, crushed black and red berries, smoked meat, garrigue, and dirty black rocks. Still shows some grainy tannin with an acidic backbone lingering throughout. The small percentage of Syrah is really showing through in terms of structure. Finishes very long, always a consistent style. (1639 views)
Tasted by Armando B on 3/13/2021 & rated 91 points: Drinking well. Blue and red fruits. Garrigue. Medium-to-full bodied (closer to full). Alcohol in check. I cannot imagine that anyone who likes southern Rhone wines would not enjoy this. (1969 views)
Tasted by finewinebuff57 on 10/3/2020 & rated 90 points: 65% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 10% Mourvèdre, 5% Cinsault in 2013, a year where Grenache struggled and mercifully alcohol levels were down a notch. This is 14% and all the better for it. Indeed this is attractive, successful and while already drinking well will certainly last. (2018 views)
Tasted by NSuri on 8/8/2020 & rated 90 points: Not my favorite CdP (1939 views)
Tasted by Brevetti on 6/12/2020 & rated 90 points: Closed at the time. Should be nice in a couple of years. (1765 views)
Tasted by brianakrin on 5/17/2020 & rated 91 points: good wine, young, better 2nd day (1375 views)
Tasted by Keith Cooper on 10/9/2019 & rated 93 points: Tasted at the Whitewater Valley Wine Society, Hampshire, UK. A blend of 80% Grenache, 10% each of Syrah and Mourvedre, the grapes from old vines. Dark blackberry colour with dark fruits, cassis, herbs and liquorice on the nose. These aromas were repeated on the palate - it was a complex and elegant, medium to full bodied wine that will keep 10-15 years. Excellent. (1596 views)
Tasted by wmccone54 on 4/20/2019 & rated 92 points: One of my favorite CdP’s and extremely consistent from vintage to vintage. Still young and pure. Fantastic aromas of smokey crushed blue and red berries, garrigue, baking spices, licorice, vanilla, and earthy herbs.. Focused depth and concentration with solid acidity, which should support further development over the longer term. Very long and persistent finish. Excellent. (1420 views)
Tasted by Sh home on 3/19/2019 & rated 90 points: Very good a little bit Young (1217 views)
Tasted by StarV100 on 2/15/2019 & rated 90 points: Very primal. First sip after PnP was alcoholic and even a little sour. But after an hour in glass, started to open up. Still mostly showing primary flavors of deep red fruit. This really needs time but I got a few pretty cheap it was worth testing out. (1368 views)
Tasted by srh on 11/17/2018: Winebar [4 Whites, 8 Reds, & 4 *shared* bottles] from 11/16/18] (Vintage Wines Ltd., San Diego, CA): Cf. the CellarTracker Article link [lower lft] to get specific info for this vintage, including acclaim.

77% Grenache, 15% Mourvedre, & 8% Syrah this vintage?

N: Garrigue, berries, poss vanilla

P: Med body; RNDISH entry with nice, ALMOST swtish frt met by some astringent pucker which loses most of its bite by the LONG, very, VERY slightly spicy finish with a bitter/swtness (35:65) to the dusty tannins. For now (IF one can ignore the early/mid-P structure), & should at least approach its 10th. My VG+/EXC-. [This vendor's $29.95 is NOW $20 < the next lowest of wine-searcher's limited U.S. sources!]

Note: With now *six* TNs for this [2016 (12/17), 2017 (3/4), and 2018 (5/26, 6/23, 10/13, & 11/17), I think most would either find it "ready" now or within the next few mos. ;) (1668 views)
Tasted by srh on 10/13/2018: Red Châteauneuf-du-Papes (Vintage Wines Ltd., San Diego, CA): Cf. the CellarTracker Article link [lower lft] to get specific info for this vintage, including acclaim.

77% Grenache, 15% Mourvedre, & 8% Syrah this vintage?

N: Straws, poss red rasps, with notes of garrigue

P: LM, poss Med, body; NICE frt met by puckerish astringency which morphs into a LONG, very, VERY slightly tangy finish with notes of swtness to the dusty tannins. NEEDS through '19, then easily making its 10th. [This vendor's $29.95 is NOW a *stunning* $29 < the next lowest of wine-searcher's limited U.S. sources!]

Note: At least with respect to needed cellaring time, this tasting probably had more in common with my 2nd tasting [3/4/2017] than the ones on [12/17/2016, 5/26/2018, & 6/23/2018]. (1495 views)
Tasted by JimTaft on 7/1/2018 & rated 91 points: Fruit, acid, very soft tannins.

Super long cork. (1440 views)
Tasted by srh on 6/30/2018: Cf. the CellarTracker Article link [lower lft] to get specific info for this vintage, including acclaim.

77% Grenache, 15% Mourvedre, & 8% Syrah this vintage?

N: Ripe, spicy berries with notes of garrigue

P: Med body with NICE, almost swtish frt met by an astringent pucker which DOES lose its punch by at least the end of the LONG, balanced, ULT pleasant finish. [I.e., there is a note of swtness to the quite scant, very, VERY fine tannins.] 14.5% ABV; My VG+/EXC-, *quite* arguably the higher based upon its approachability *&* the QPR of the $29.95 @ which it was purchased. [As of late Apr '20, wine-searcher still shows 2 sources @ $50 & $60].

Addendum: Also tasted 2016 (12/17), 2017 (3/4), and 2018 (5/26, 6/23, 10/13, & 11/17). (1351 views)
Tasted by srh on 6/23/2018: Winebar [4 Whites, 8 Reds, & 2 *shared* reds] from 06/22/18] (Vintage Wines Ltd., San Diego, CA): Cf. the CellarTracker Article link [lower lft] to get specific info for this vintage, including acclaim.

77% Grenache, 15% Mourvedre, & 8% Syrah this vintage?

N: Vanilla, poss choc? Attractive, but tough to parse

P: LM body; RNDISH entry with NICE, almost swtish frt firmed by a pucker which transitions into a LONG, pleasantly balanced finish with a swtness & slight spiciness to the remaining, SCANT dusty tannins. Impressive for now & probably through '20. My VG+/EXC-, arguably a bit more for readiness & QPR! [This vendor's [closeout?] $29.95 is $8 < the NEXT closest wine-searcher offering in an *incredibly* SKEWED listing!]

Note: A bottle much like my 3rd, cf. my note of 5/26/2018 (1532 views)
Tasted by srh on 5/26/2018: Rhone Reds (Vintage Wines Ltd., San Diego, CA): Cf. the CellarTracker Article link [lower lft] to get specific info for this vintage, including acclaim.

77% Grenache, 15% Mourvedre, & 8% Syrah this vintage?

N: Attractively RIPE, jammy, smokey, with garrigue

P: LM body; NICE, almost swtish frt met by some firming structure which QUITE resolves by the LONG, pleasant finish with OCCASIONAL hints of bitterness. For now & probably through '19. My VG, though more can CERTAINLY be argued based upon current drinkability *&* this vendor's [closeout?] $29.95, which is an almost UNBELIEVABLE $20 < the NEXT closest wine-searcher offering in an *incredibly* SKEWED listing!

Note: My 3rd time [cf. 12/17/2016 & 3/4/2017] I found this FAR more "advanced" than I had previously anticipated, something that can be inferred by reading the NOTES in Jancis Robinson. (1488 views)
Tasted by Derek Darth Taster on 3/20/2018: Masterclass with Isabelle Sabon. Small tasting portion only.
Slight florals, with garrigue, red cherries, strawberries. Rich. Gets a bit jammy sweet. Chewy high tannins. (1486 views)
Tasted by TexasBob on 12/6/2017 & rated 91 points: Medium garnet red. Slight coffee on the nose, but not much else. Blackberry, raspberry, and slight char notes. Mildly sweet vanillin and a bracing Indian spice lead into the red berry finish. Very nice, especially on the finish, which accounts for most of the points because it is so tasty. (1418 views)
Tasted by soyhead on 10/5/2017: nose- dark raspberry, sweet tobacco
mouth- sappy, cornucopia of red and dark fruits, juicy and layered. fruit forward. as of 10/17 i prefer how this drinks over the VV (1326 views)
Tasted by GTFreek on 4/24/2017: Brought to blind tasting group. Nose shows white pepper, raspberry, funk, spiced game, fresh cherry. Most of the group said Rhone Grenache of some kind. (1688 views)
Tasted by srh on 3/4/2017: Red Châteauneuf-du-Papes (Vintage Wines Ltd., San Diego, CA): Cf. the CellarTracker Article link [lower lft] to get specific info for this vintage, including acclaim.

77% Grenache, 15% Mourvedre, & 8% Syrah this vintage?

N: Closed/muted; berries/garrigue/spice? jammy notes with air?

P: Med body; Swtish frt (or almost?) with balancing pucker mid palate. LONG, VERY slightly astringent/puckery finish. A bigger, riper version of the 1st wine in this flight, & needing 2 yrs min of cellaring, IF the potential R.S. doesn't cause issues. [This vendor's $41.95 IS at *the* top of a wide range of pricing!] (1814 views)
Tasted by srh on 12/17/2016: Winebar [Various Reds] for 12/16/16 (Vintage Wines Ltd., San Diego, CA): Commonly 65% old Grenache, 20% Syrah, 10% Mourvèdre, & 5% Cinsault coming from different soils (sandy, pebbly, red clayey), located in the northern part of the appellation & in the La Crau plot. 80% destemmed, aged for 12 mos, 80% in vat and 20% in barrels (1/3 new).

N: Muted, but seems jammy with forest floor atop (poss) blood notes? Intensity lurking?

P: MF body; Almost swtish frt on front (close to threshold R.S.?) turns puckery/astringent early mid palate, which somewhat resolves by the long, very slightly spicy finish. At least a BIT disjointed, & the potential R.S. is problematical. Otherwise, would definitely BENEFIT from 2 yrs min of cellaring, it then (potentially) becoming a powerhouse? 92 pts WS, 91 ea WA & Vinous (Raynolds), 90 Jeff Leve, 16.5/20 ea Vinum, Gault & Millau, La Revue du Vin de France, & Jancis Robinson, and 3/5* drinkrhone.com . Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
