Community Tasting Notes (average 93.6 pts. and median of 94 pts. in 13 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by tcarter on 1/15/2023 & rated 94 points: Was a little tight on first Coravin, noticeably better on second Coravin a week later, and about the same when opening the bottle fully the next night. Overall great stuff in the great tradition of Lillian syrahs, but would still benefit from a decant... (516 views)
Tasted by TMOVino2 on 1/12/2023 & rated 93 points: Ruby red in color. Holding very well. Aromas of red fruit, pomegranate, blueberries, cinnamon stick, wet stone. Only opened about an hour so we’ll see how it evolves. Palate is very smooth and lively, good acidity still remains. Carries the red fruits and spice well. These wine’s continue to be gems with about a decade on them. (590 views)
Tasted by Kreutzer on 1/2/2023 & rated 94 points: Fantastic balance. Mature now, but no way near getting tired. Very complex with dark fruit and some tertiary aromas. (522 views)
Tasted by Nanda on 7/15/2019 & rated 93 points: Dinner with Maggie Harrison (Formentos - Chicago, IL): A fantastic nose with smoked meat, bacon and smoke fully integrated with moderately ripe black fruit. Great balance and persistence on the palate. (1945 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 7/15/2019 & rated 94 points: Dinner with Maggie Harrison (Antica Terra / Lillian), Drinking her Great Wine + Great French Wine (Formento's - Chicago IL): Lots of black plum, berry cherry, savory spice with charming perfumed notes in very complex combination. Long, powerful and balanced all the way through a very long and impressive finish with elegant tannins. Comes across as less ripe than most Central Coast Syrah, but certainly still ripe enough. Fantastic and alluring now, probably with upside. My co-WOTN with Chave 1998 Hermitage. (2620 views)
Tasted by Rusty1488 on 7/12/2019 & rated 94 points: Quite good. This has plenty of legs for the future. Revisit in 3-5 years (1306 views)
Tasted by Baron Slick on 7/27/2018 & rated 95 points: Fantastic wine. Tremendously impactful and pure, and as supreme as Syrah gets. Ripe, black and purple fruit, pencil shavings, and myrrh aromas feature spicy, brambly undertones. Dense, concentrated, and powerful, with layers, textures, and flavors that just don’t quit. But it's the incredible balance and luminosity that stand out for such a voluptuous and tenacious wine. It comes across perfectly composed, refined, and in complete control. A shot of triple espresso dominates the long and shapely finish. An absolute knockout. (1734 views)
Tasted by Mtnmd1 on 2/14/2017 & rated 92 points: Well structured, dark fruit Syrah. Tasted of colder climes. Drank well over two nights. (2373 views)
Tasted by pdemaio on 10/22/2016 & rated 94 points: Great, complex syrah. A lot going on with great backing spice and fruit on the nose, powerful mid-palate, and lush, long finish. Good acid and backbone round out the fruit.

Tasted by smphelps on 8/4/2016 & rated 94 points: Very nice. Sweaty, meaty, with tobacco and rosemary on the nose. Excellent delineation. (1714 views)
Tasted by Eric Guido on 4/19/2015 & rated 93 points: The nose was rich with dark fruits, brown sugar and spice, hints of pepper and savory herbs. On the palate, this displayed silky yet taut textures with balancing richness in its black fruit, spice, violet floral tones and hints of bitters. The finish was long with saturating dark fruit, herbs and spice. (2829 views)

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
