Community Tasting Notes (average 91.6 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 15 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by drwine2001 on 9/24/2019: Eclectic Older Wines from the Rare Wine Company with Mannie Berk (The Morris, San Francisco): Medium yellow. Fresher aromas than the Dauvissat Forest. Floral, herbal tones. Bigger than that wine although relatively lean for Raveneau and not that waxy texture they can have. Tons of salinity and soil with excellent fruit to support it. In great shape, not a bit too loose or ripe. (1278 views)
Tasted by KeithAkers on 8/20/2019 & rated 93 points: Dinner at Nico Osteria (Nico Osteria, Chicago IL): The nose is a thing of beauty after just a bit of swirling to wake it up. The nose is deep and mature with gorgeous tones of red apples, pears, flint, custard, vanilla beans, tidal pool aromas, creams, and some yellow flowers. The Medium bodied feel is textured and refined with crisp and well-integrated, high acidity. The feel is seamless with a lovely and long finish that doesn't want to stop. This is right in the zone and its just beautiful. (508 views)
Tasted by tinybubbles on 6/23/2017 & rated 88 points: Fading and thing. While perhaps not the best bottle, a disappointing performance in all respects. 88- (1177 views)
Tasted by Jeremy Holmes on 3/10/2016: Absolutely splendid. Fresh and inviting nose of mint, fennel and lemon juice along with some mineral reduction. It is textured in the mouth with layers, of citrus, flora and mineral, It has a dollop of butter and finishes with outstanding cut. (1720 views)
Tasted by LW31 on 3/9/2016 flawed bottle: Oxidized. (1577 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 2/10/2016 flawed bottle: The rare bottle of completely oxidized Raveneau (1555 views)
Tasted by acyso on 10/5/2015 flawed bottle: Senn-d off (part 2): Chablis at Nico Osteria (Chicago, IL): Advanced colour. Uh oh. A bit of fino sherry on the nose. Empty, hollow palate. The pox. (2487 views)
Tasted by David Paris (dbp) on 5/21/2014 & rated 90 points: Aged Raveneau, Dauvissat & Fevre at E&R: Very creamy aromas. Soft, like an orange julius. Some kerosene comes in too, though. Strange how strong that kerosene note is an hour later. Soft and creamy on the palate, with a pretty mellow personality. Acid is slightly burning, and it's tart, with a green streak and more slightly soapy notions. Puckering finish that lingers this way for some time, but doesn't really offer too much depth, with a slight metallic notion. (1771 views)
Tasted by -E- on 6/19/2013 flawed bottle: Raveneau vs Dauvissat (Oslo): Korket. Lukter dårlige østers (2127 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 1/10/2012: Medium yellow which lightened a bit in the decanter. Lovely lemony nose. Lighter weight, very good acidity, some mineral and salinity, just a hint of herb. Softened and broadened by age, but no oxidation or secondary Raveneau nuttiness. Very fine and pretty much at peak now. Not the deepest nor most complex example from this great producer, but I continue to love the understated excellence of the 2000 Chablis. (1960 views)
Tasted by Jeremy Holmes on 9/16/2009: Starts off all funky with loads of cheesy leesy action and some almond meal. There’s also plenty of sulphur and with air the struck match blanket lifts to reveal the most pure expression of Chablis with all its iodine and freshly squeezed lemon action. Some aniseed appears with further air. (1702 views)
Tasted by Jeremy Holmes on 1/31/2009: Lemon zest and iodine greets the nose with a faint whiff of butter. In the mouth it is fine and linear with rainwater like purity but no lack of depth or concentration. With air a sheath of glycerol envelops the rocky minerality and more subtle complex notes of aniseed and mint come to the fore. Beautifully textured, restrained and detailed, drinking well now with plenty in reserve. (1874 views)
Tasted by sehill on 12/19/2008 & rated 94 points: This wine was decanted and poured. It showed exceptionally well. Except for losing its "baby fat" fruit, this wine has evolved very little since release. It is still youthful and not showing signs of age. The bouquet shows oyster shells, sea water, rocks (lots of rocks) and subtle floral and citrus notes. The color is a very light yellow that would be appropriate for a just released wine. It is vibrant and clear. The medium bodied palate shows an intense concentration of oyster shells and rocks (sandstone, limestone, granite). The finish lingers with acidity giving balance and depth to the sea shell / rock components. There is a lot of concentration in this wine both in the aromatics and on the palate but it is contained in the ethereal style of Raveneau. This wine continued to improve in the decanter and was continuing to evolve until the last taste. Based on tasting this wine a number of times since release plus the showing of this bottle, this should continue to age effortlessly for many years. (1651 views)
Tasted by danstrings on 6/22/2008 flawed bottle: Dinner with Julie and gang -- Arghhhhhhhhhhh! CORKED! Two corked "premium" wines in two nights! Arghhh! You did get the marzipan and seashell candied lime in this, unfortunately framed by that dreaded bleachy smelling corkiness. (1576 views)

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio

Chablis

Chablis (Fédération de Défense de l'Appellation Chablis) | Chablis (Burgundy Wines)

2014 Vintage Notes:
"... a hybrid of 2004/2007 and 2010. The stone, citrus and limestone amalgam is exactly what we search for in Chablis as the style harkens to a day in the Cote de Beaune proper (1960's - 1980's) when wine was not meant to be consumed the week it was released, battonage was not used by all and new oak was rarely seen ... the texture is natural and 'of the vintage' not 'of the winemaker' .... Like Sancerre or the Loire in general, 2014 in Chablis is one of those rare years with extract and transparency. It appears to be a vintage for the "neoclassic" ages and those of us intent on cellaring the most terroir-driven (but still powerful) examples of vineyard, site-place and varietal will want to invest (heavily) in the magnetic and electric 2014's." - Jon Rimmerman

2018 Vintage Notes:
"There’s not that razor sharp Chablis acidity in 2018,” says Patrick Piuze. “But there is good definition of place. The dry conditions drove vines to drink deeper down in the soil profile."
