Tasted by GH_winelover on 4/25/2024 & rated 93 points: Dinner at Maple & Ash. Decanted for half an hour before drinking. Needed longer as it continues to get better throughout dinner. Excellent nose with cassis and black fruit. Good mouthfeel with less structure and tannin than I expected. Fruit is fading but still primary. Very enjoyable with dinner and did not overpower the steak. Needs a longer decant. (1627 views)
Tasted by americanstorm on 4/22/2024 & rated 90 points: Opened at the end of the evening to compare to a bottle of 1995 Pontet-Canet a friend brought. The nose and pallet of both wines were almost identical with the 2014 being slightly brighter/fresher with more acidity. Given the high critic scores of the 14 I expected a great wine but this was average at best and I was underwhelmed. Of the 6 different red, two bottles each of 13 dunn Napa Valley 13 Palo Scavino bric del fiasc 16 torbreck Descendant and 08 circa cab franc, the two Pontet-Canet were my least favorite. Perhaps I'm just not a bordeaux guy or maybe my pallet isn't sophisticated enough (im sure the bordeaux lovers would say this- LOL) to appreciate them, but, at least for me, there are a lot of places making better wine then bordeaux. Would not buy again and not a particularly good qpr. Having said all that, I do think Bordeaux makes the best chardonnay in the world! (2228 views)
Tasted by rnjbond on 4/9/2024 & rated 93 points: Drank at a business dinner in Montréal.

Decanted and drank over the course of two hours.

Dark cherry, wet dirt, slight spice.

Opened up nicely, probably can use more time.

Paired well with gnocchi.

93 points. (2765 views)
Tasted by HOS on 3/27/2024 & rated 95 points: Decanted and began drinking. It continues to improve as it ages. (3198 views)
Tasted by Semperchi on 3/10/2024 & rated 96 points: What a stunner! The nose hooks you immediately with inky black fruit and pencil shavings, the palate is bursting with black fruit, acidity, and surprisingly integrated tannins. Lots of drive and length. At 10 years old, this does not feel too young to drink nor from a “normal” vintage. Great value for the quality (3531 views)
Tasted by b swan on 3/3/2024 & rated 94 points: D, Similar to the 2011, the 2014 has added aromatic steeliness, especially compared with the 2012. However, the 2014 displays lovely fruit purity of cassis, red and black berry on the palate, and I like the tension, even if 2012 wins on sumptuousness. Aged 50% new oak , 35% amphora. (3468 views)
Tasted by Arcturus on 3/2/2024 & rated 91 points: 91. Blackberry and graphite on the nose. More black fruits on the palate, medium finish. Fairly straightforward, classic claret. (3164 views)
Tasted by Mihimu on 3/2/2024 & rated 94 points: Had a bottle with one of my best friends at Reussbad Restaurant in Lucerne🇨🇭with great food, it was getting along perfectly with foie gras and entrecote „cafe de paris“
What a wine!! Perfectly ready to drink now
Dry, medium acidity, medium body, very elegant and complex, perfectly balanced between fruit and oak, nice aromas of black fruit and earthy elements in the nose and on the palate, great quality as expected, just a great wine!! (2979 views)
Tasted by Collector1855 on 2/23/2024 & rated 93 points: Bordeaux 2014, 10-years on tasted blind: The nose is ripe here with dark fruit and oak spices. Polished palate, again good ripeness and dark berries. Well made, but aromatically a bit foursquare, but it did very well with the crowd. Rank 2/15 (2898 views)
Tasted by Cailles on 2/22/2024 & rated 91 points: Bordeaux 2014 - 10 Years On - 15 Reds: Fifteen red wines (14 left bank/1 right bank). All tasted blind. The 2014 vintage turned out to be good, but not exceptional. This vintage is characterized by a cool, classic style with an impressive expression of fresh fruit. The wines were rich in blue fruit, supported by a fine mineral backbone, without succumbing to overripeness or overbearing fruitiness. Contrary to expectations, the wines were not overly austere and showed good (excellent at the top) tannin structure, contributing to a classic Bordeaux experience. However, it's important to note that while these wines have commendable qualities, they lack the complexity and, to a lesser extent, the finesse and elegance characteristic of the most celebrated vintages. Many of the wines seemed a bit simplistic. I think they are likely to peak in the early rather than mature into 30, 40, 50-year wines as I don’t think there is enough fruit. My top three were a layered, blue-fruited Ducru Beaucaillou, a strawberry-laden, purity-driven Montrose (both rated 94pts), and an elegant Pichon Lalande (93pts), foreshadowing the great things this estate has produced in vintages since. The group winner was also the Ducru.

TN: This was a bit controversial around the table due to its style. While most wines shine with their structure and minerality, show that old-school Bordeaux style, this wine was very polished with lots of candied red berries. Clearly an odd-one out, I wouldn’t necessarily have guessed this to be a Bordeaux. I’m not a strict purist and different styles keep it interesting but this is not a wine I would chase.

Decanting: Not decanted, I would go for two hours. (3076 views)
Tasted by Kiralux on 1/1/2024 & rated 89 points: Retasted another bottle. Still overwhelming with the tannins, despite 2h of carafe. Lovely black fruit flavours and tobacco but simply too tannic for now. Will def. Wait 5 years before next. (4080 views)
Tasted by HOS on 12/22/2023 & rated 94 points: Decanted 1hour. Currant, roasted herbs, medium bodied with a long finish. Great upside. (3369 views)
Tasted by Purple Tooth on 12/14/2023 & rated 93 points: **In 2014, PC definitely hits the target for PC and this one is another great value for the Bordeaux drinkers who like this style of wine and venture off of the beaten path. California drinkers will especially find big appeal in this...I think. Lots of tug and pull, not over the top, sweet, wanting to be serious, but cant wipe the smirk off the face. Faint graphite and good balance between all components (fruit, tannin, acid, alcohol, oak). Shy on the nose, delightful in the mouth, and ready to go without any signs of big improvement or falling apart. This is another 2014 wine from the left bank of Bordeaux that checks that perfect holiday wine box. Drink!

* A good value for PC fans. (4093 views)
Tasted by Sam-wine on 12/8/2023 & rated 94 points: Very lively, such intense nose. It kindly flashed me. Med to full body, smooth tannins, nicely integrated acidity. So well balanced and intense, I loved it completely. (3942 views)
Tasted by John McCabe on 10/21/2023 & rated 93 points: Quite alive and fleshy, with some classic Pauillac notes of anise and black fruit. Reminded me of Grand Puy Lacoste a bit. Still has some of the unformed almost strident aspect from the '14 vintage, but more appealing than most. (5457 views)
Tasted by ta75 on 9/30/2023 & rated 92 points: Great structure, not as giving right now. Not sure if it will get better or stay here. Very good though (4801 views)
Tasted by nordbeckjk on 9/6/2023 & rated 92 points: This Bordeaux had hints of strawberry fruit similar to red burgundy and fine dry tannins a bit like a young barolo. Good flavor and noise. Perhaps I should have given the wine more air before I drank it. (5291 views)
Tasted by NoTrollingerPlease on 8/13/2023 & rated 91 points: Best bottle (Weindorf Kirchheim): Glass: Gabriel Standard
Popped and poured. Clear, deep ruby color. Very primary nose, lots of fruit, not very expressive though. On the palate of course young, high acidity, fine medium+ tannin, lots of deep fruit, herbs, good balance, medium+ finish. In a difficult stage right now, not in its fruit phase anymore and not yet enough tertiary complexity. I would wait 5+ years before I pop another bottle. 91+ (5741 views)
Tasted by BLam on 8/4/2023 & rated 88 points: We openned in hurry without decanting, much too young to serve. (5064 views)
Tasted by dmccann3 on 7/22/2023 & rated 88 points: Still very young. Needs a long decant. Long finish, berries. Simply delicious (4871 views)
Tasted by ajeeja on 7/19/2023: Hard to put in words, but this is classic, refined, and rustic, all at the same time. I love it and it just entered its drinking window. Bottle aging will help, but there is no shame in popping the cork now if you have a few. (4689 views)
Tasted by cubswinws on 6/2/2023 & rated 91 points: Seemed a bit muted. Maybe entering a closed stage. Not as bright and expressive as my last bottle from 18 months ago. (5555 views)
Tasted by PghMike on 5/27/2023 & rated 93 points: Very nice on the nose straight out of the bottle. Blueberry, a little cherry, slate, pyrazine and a big hit of violets on the palate. Medium length on the finish. Structure and dusty tannins remain prominent. (5095 views)
Tasted by HeavyPourWine on 5/22/2023 & rated 94 points: A week in Bordeaux (Mouton, Pontet Canet, D'Issan, Langoa & Leoville Barton, SHL, Arbo, Pavie, Fleur de Bouard, Cheval Blanc, VCC, Figeac); 5/21/2023-5/26/2023 (Left and Right banks of Bordeaux): Tasted @ the chateau from 375ml. PNP. Very soft tannins, elegant wine that is drinking very well today. May improve a bit over next couple years but this '14 is drinking great right now! Great QPR and will add some of this to my cellar. Lovely and unique biodynamic property well worth a visit! Brad - heavypourwine.com (5820 views)
Tasted by JLCFan on 5/21/2023 & rated 93 points: Powerful body with grippy tannins. Lots of fruit at the forefront. Pyrazine, almost jalapeño or ripe bell pepper, brings nice complexity. (4723 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

Bordeaux Wine Guide

Vins Bordeaux (Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux)

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Médoc

Vins du Médoc (Conseil des Vins du Médoc) - Read More about the Medoc

VdB

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.

Pauillac

Read more detailed information about Pauillac Looking full onto the river from the earliest days, with an important port activity, traces of which go back to ancient times (shipment of bronze as long ago as 2000 B.C.), Pauillac's life has always been intimately linked to the history of wine. Although port activities were at the root of its prosperity, Pauillac had to wait until the eighteenth century when Bordeaux ceased to hold its privileged position to become a wine port. The town then became the natural outlet for the wine production of neighbouring cantons before reaching its zenith in a period when the vineyards were exceptionally prosperous.

The characteristic of the Pauillac terroir is its exceptional relief: the many undulating ridges make it unique morphologically speaking. Highly favourable conditions facilitate the dissection of the layer of gravel. This thin, Garonne gravel from whose very poverty springs great richness, has an extremely effective natural drainage.

With their velvet red colour with a hint of amber, the wines from the Pauillac appellation, full-bodied and rich in tannin, are vigorous. Powerful when young, their aromas of red fruits (black-currant, raspberry) or flowers (violets, roses, irises) melt with the passing of time into a bouquet which is long in the mouth.
Rich and complex, the wines of Pauillac deserve to be laid down for a little longer.

Production conditions (Decree dated November 14, 1936)

In order to have the right to the Pauillac appellation of controlled origin, red wines must:
- come from the commune of Pauillac and from precisely defined parcels in the communes of Cissac, Saint-Julien, Saint-Estèphe and Saint-Sauveur, "excluding the parcels situated on recent alluvium and sand on impermeable subsoils",
- satisfy precise production conditions : grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (178 grammes - 6.27 oz. - per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°5) base yield (45 hectolitres per hectare).
