Community Tasting Notes (average 92.9 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 106 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by WindFlyer on 5/13/2024 & rated 93 points: intense gold yellow colour and appreciable viscosity in the glass. a bit of petrol in the nose blew off quickly to reveal a heady nose of honeysuckle and white blossoms, fresh mango, papaya and quince. silky in the mouth and somewhat less exuberant than the nose would suggest, the fruit layers are laced with a citric acidity and a gingery spice note.

long and delightful as it warms up a bit… and a candidate for near-term consumption.

well-integrated 14% AbV (26 views)
Tasted by rm97 on 4/26/2024 & rated 93 points: This surprised to the upside. Acidity still there and finish was long, with several waves of flavor. Slight petroleum taste though not unpleasant. (131 views)
Tasted by eschaefer on 3/18/2024 & rated 91 points: Paired with a middle eastern styled salmon. Nice pairing. Wine was beautiful medium straw gold.medium bodied but excellent legs in the glass. Aromas of quince, white peach and white flowers. Similar palate profile with a dose of minerality that was pleasing. Mid palate and finish were a bit lacking but a nice showing for this wine at 10 years old. Remarkably better after it came up to 62 F out of the cellar. Well recommended. (350 views)
Tasted by TexasBob on 11/24/2023 & rated 91 points: 24k gold color. Cantaloupe and watermelon on the nose. Notes of watermelon close to the rind, quince, cantaloupe, strong spring flower notes, and yellow corn/hominy. (442 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 5/26/2023 & rated 92 points: Old Guys Lunch: Hittin' the Patio Again (Tilia, Mpls): Light gold color. Drank a glass over an hour. Just a bit warmer in glass than ideal at the outset, but still showing its colors. Lovely tropical fruits and classic viognier floral notes, herbal, sweet fruits, oily, lychee, passion fruit, guava, and citrus, good mineral definition, light spice on the finish. (987 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 12/17/2022: Holiday Champagne Gala (Park Ridge Country Club): Small pour. Still fresh enough and wonderfully rich, this was too warm when served, making it seem more flabby than it should, with the alcohol too pronounced. (2578 views)
Tasted by TexasBob on 11/15/2022 & rated 94 points: Rich dark gold color. Golden pear, sweet cantaloupe, guava, mango, passion fruit, and white pepper on the rich, delicious nose. Notes of kumquat, bitter honey, apricots, on a sweet, velvety background. (1063 views)
Tasted by rc@ughey on 10/29/2022 & rated 91 points: Honeyed and long and extremely bold. Intensely floral. Always a crowd-pleaser, and yet I can't drink more than a glass or so of it. Not a wine that I buy but happy to drink if someone else is opening it. (1160 views)
Tasted by Derek Darth Taster on 8/20/2022 & rated 94 points: Hotpot dinner at Old Holland. Drank slowly over 2 hours.
Appearance is clear, medium intensity, gold colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, pronounced intensity, with aromas of yellow flowers, fading honeysuckle, honey oil, ripe peach and banana, maybe some hot stone minerals. Developed.
On the palate, dry, medium acidity, high alcohol (14.5%), full body. Pronounced flavour intensity, with flavours of sweet honey oil, ripe peach, sweet honey nut integrated oak. Long unctuous finish.
Very good quality. Unapologetic big intense Condrieu. Time to drink up before the florals fade more. (1499 views)
Tasted by Philip67 on 1/7/2022 & rated 94 points: Delicious, unctuous, full bodied wine delivering a top class exotic flavour profile typical of the grape. This is gorgeous. Notes of pear, grapefruit, white peach and passion fruit. There are also floral notes, especially honeysuckle. Long and complex. Drink now.

Phillipe Guigal says to drink Condrieu young and I think he is right. The 2019 I had yesterday was better - definitely exuberant, whereas I do not mark this quite as "exuberant" - the fruit (and exuberance) has begun to decline. The explosion of flavours produced by a young Condrieu is a thing of wonder and I think they are best drunk young, unlike most other serious white wine. (1582 views)
Tasted by tanduybui on 10/13/2021 & rated 90 points: This is a great drop as long as you like your Condrieu to be full frontal. No apologies made here - it is full throttle all the way to the finish line. If living on the edge for the whole journey is not cup of tea then this is not for you.

Still fresh, clean and no sign of flabbiness, it is actually as fresh as a daisy. Lovely honeysuckle, stone fruits, peach, mandarin and perfumed white flowers. Had lovely backbone of acidity with structure courtesy of a cooler 2014. Beautiful finish with some minerality with the fruit bells still ringing loudly. The only down side was the oak was a tad overplayed so decanting this wine before consumption is essential. Went very well with roast chicken!

Drink now or 4+ years. (1498 views)
Tasted by drfischer on 7/24/2021 & rated 93 points: Had all the taste you would expect from this wine - but a little bit reserved. Had also a bottle from 2017. This was tastier and fresher (would get 95 points) (1608 views)
Tasted by btock on 11/5/2020 & rated 91 points: Had very high hopes for this bottle considering how exceptional the first showing was. This go around, the fruit was a bit muted and heavy. Maybe I held it too long? No defects, just not the showstopper it was. heavier golden hues in the glass, richly textured. Bit of melon and wax. (2142 views)
Tasted by OenoEd on 8/9/2020 & rated 94 points: Still gorgeous; consistent with my notes in 2017 and 2018. Worked with alder wood grilled veal chop, complimenting rosemary, sage, and oyster mushrooms. A lighter bodied food friendly viognier is a joy, given how many others are show off and stand alone floral wide bodies, oilier, as even La Doriane can be in hotter, riper vintages. CT tasters well recount the many specific qualities of this beauty. Still, it’s wisteria/honeysuckle/ peach juice palate profile may not appeal to those who regularly consume pinot grigio and chablis. But this bottling, for them, is a good place to start! Still with 5-7 years of great drinking, no signs of devolution. (2323 views)
Tasted by Brevetti on 6/12/2020 & rated 95 points: This wine offers a very beautiful complexity and flowers aromas. An iconic white Rhône wine, at its best level. (2125 views)
Tasted by hoservin on 5/10/2020 & rated 94 points: Aromatic nose of honeysuckle, apricot, melon, lemon zest, hazelnut and candied ginger. Apricot, melon, hazelnut and lemon zest on the palate. Very long, dry finish. Gorgeous wine. Served with coquille St. Jacques. (1905 views)
Tasted by Winevestor on 2/1/2020 & rated 91 points: Pear, hay and vanilla on the nose. It is a deep golden color. Full mouthfeel with a distinctive taste. Big mouthfeel and a dollop of oak. It has a backbone of acidity which is almost bitter. More pear, honey and a small spice kick. But it also has an overlay of aromatics that you expect from viognier. I keep going back to taste it - it is very well made and different - and I'm liking but not loving this wine. From the TNs others like this style more than me. (2406 views)
Tasted by sdsull on 1/27/2020 & rated 94 points: This is amongst my favorite Rhone whites and is wonderful to drink during Winter months. It reminds the palette of late summer, of pears and honey. It has a super long finish - at least 2+ minutes. This wine needs food to show its full expression, but is still quite good on its own - which is how I am drinking it tonight by the warmth of my fireplace. this is the last of the 2014's.... but there are plenty of 15, 16 and 17's in the cellar for another time. (2003 views)
Tasted by concord on 12/21/2019: Powerful on both the nose and the palate, stood up well to a moderately spiced squash dish. Still drinking well so think might still be at it's peak for a little more than a year. (1867 views)
Tasted by BillyT on 11/23/2019 & rated 93 points: One has to be prepared to experience a unique flavor profile and dynamic unlike any other white wine. It is hard to describe similar to Dagueneau wines. The wines have an ethereal yet tangible profile that is mesmerizing. Sorry but it was a moment of reflection and enjoyment with new friends at dinner. (1929 views)
Tasted by skifree on 11/15/2019 & rated 94 points: This wine was perfect to drink on a cool, dark November evening. Even richer on the nose than I remembered, with nut oil, honey, and macerated yellow fruit enveloping the nose. Add some spice (nutmeg?) in the mouth and that nutty bitterness on the very long finish, and each sip is delicious. It paired well with cheese and crackers; some salt smoothed everything out. (1847 views)
Tasted by hoservin on 10/20/2019 & rated 94 points: Complex, aromatic nose of white flowers, apricot, pear, hazelnut, coconut, ginger and lemon zest. It’s hard to put the glass down from my nose. Apricot, pear, lemon, hazelnut, coconut and candied ginger on the palate. Creamy, ripe fruit on the mid-palate leading to a very long finish. Nice mineral character. Served with New Orleans barbecue shrimp. (1380 views)
Tasted by Janstan on 9/7/2019 & rated 91 points: We needed a fattier food pairing to do justice to this wine. Very well balanced but needs the right food pairing to show off its stuff (1537 views)
Tasted by RichardP on 7/14/2019 & rated 92 points: Honeysuckle and peach on the nose. On the palate, apricot, pear, peach, and notes of mango, honey, and something lightly spicy - I see other notes saying ginger, and it's something like that. This has an unctuous texture and moderate acidity, with a medium to long finish. I can appreciate this wine for being well made, complex, and a good representative of the variety, but sadly I think I am not a fan of Viognier except as a blending grape - having tried both high- and low-end ones, the flavor profile does not appeal to me. (1569 views)
Tasted by whitmanlholt on 6/30/2019 & rated 91 points: Popped and poured. This is a light yellow wine. The nose is fragrant, with very floral notes, honeycomb, and beeswax. In the mouth, this is thick and slightly sweet, leaving a subtly salty finish. Overall, this is a brash and open wine. Nevertheless, I think this is a bit expensive for what it is. 91 points. A FAMILY HISTORY
Land with 24 centuries of history behind it, worked and preserved by three generations of winemakers with family values at their core and a commitment to an illustrious terrain that produces prestigious wines. This, in a nutshell, is the Maison Guigal. Right from the beginning the motto, “No Pains No Gains” underpins the promise made to Etienne Guigal. A commitment to work together to follow in his footsteps, to communicate the family’s passion and create so many emotions. Today, Marcel and Philippe, along with their wives, are the guardians of this exceptional domain which combines history, devotion and a sense of togetherness. A breath of inspiration for generations to come.

CÔTE-RÔTIE
1
Planted on slopes by the Romans 24 centuries ago, this illustrious vineyard is made up of the Côte Brune, upstream of the Reynard and the Côte Blonde which is downstream. Planted almost exclusively with Syrah, the Côte Brune produces a powerful, intense wine. Thanks to a dash of Viognier which compliments the Syrah, the Côte Blonde is more subtle. There is a charming legend attached to this appellation and the Château d’Ampuis: “the sire of this place had two daughters, one with hair as dark as the night and the other blonde like a field of wheat. When they got married he endowed each with two of his best slopes. This is how we inherited the Côte Brune and the Côte Blonde”

CONDRIEU
2
With its steep terraces which plunge towards the Rhône, this vineyard is planted solely with Viognier. A rare grape varietal imported by the Greeks at the beginning of our era, combined with granite soils its naturally complex character produces a unique white wine with a yellow golden hue and intense and subtle notes of delicate apricot and white peach.

SAINT-JOSEPH
3
Enjoyed at the table of kings, this illustrious wine’s name hails back to the 16th Century and the Jesuit monks of Tournon. The reds are made from Syrah and the whites from Marsanne and Rousanne. These grape varieties grown on a South to South East facing steeply sloped vineyard with granite soils produce elegant, luscious wines.

HERMITAGE
4
A prestigious appellation since ancient times, it is named after a 13th Century hermit who sought redemption by devoting himself to prayer and the cultivation of vines. Enjoyed by the Russian Court and the great and the good of Europe, this rich and powerful wine with intense aromas is produced from Syrah for the reds and Marsanne and Roussanne for the whites.

CROZES-HERMITAGE
5
A typical wine of the northern Rhône, Crozes-Hermitage benefits from warm pebbly soils with good drainage. This is a vast appellation partially planted on slopes. The reds are produced from Syrah and the whites from Marsanne and Rousanne. The red wine is deep ruby in colour, full of savoury flavour and well-balanced. The white wines are dry and aromatic with floral notes.

CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE
6
These soils are composed of calcareous round pebbles and the vineyards are swept by the Mistral winds and warmed by the Provencal sunshine, resulting in wines with unmistakable flavours of the South. These southern wines are produced from a complex blend of the 13 grape varieties of the appellation with Grenache as the main component. They are complex with soft and powerful tannins and are characterised by a generous and strong personality.

Viognier

Viogner is wrong wine

This is nonsense.

Northern Rhône

Guide to the wines and appellations of the Northern Rhone Valley -

The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)

Regional History:
Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.
