Community Tasting Notes (average 93.1 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 48 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by acidqueen on 4/3/2024 & rated 95 points: Gold color. No significant decant but this definitely improved with air. Floral notes but really more about hay, earth and bitter citrus peel. Tasted like licking the inside of a mango peel - sour and bitter with a tropical undertow. No real sweetness here which is awesome. Sufficiently but not overripe, but well balanced by acid. Perhaps candied citrus peel. Might be the best Viognier I have ever had.
Paired this with a Japanese style fried trout in a vinegared sauce with bamboo shoots and vegetables. The earthy and sweet-sour dish did well with this wine. (129 views)
Tasted by pbaek on 3/29/2024: I’ve experienced a lot of bottle variation with this wine and this particular bottle was sort of in between the good and not so good ones. Golden color. Mature Chablis-like bouquet, brine, toffee caramel, apples. Advanced, compared to the 2014 Chery, but there are no tropical fruit notes, rather baked apple notes, pear, toffee caramel. There’s good acidity, this is not heavy at all, but I’m also not sure this is the best example of what this wine can show. Have a few more in the cellar to try. (197 views)
Tasted by jkscully on 1/22/2023: Unlike some past Condrieu that I have had, this one needed a full hour or so of air to open up. Really nice once it did. Lots of honey and grilled, smoky peaches along with ripe mango and fresh apricots. This reminds me of a Gewürztraminer, but more elegant and more sophisticated. It was better on the warmer side of the spectrum, which really drew out the strong salty and mineral flavors. There’s a touch of floral scents in there too, just enough to remind you that this is Viognier. Lanolin, coconut oil, and freshly cut wood on the finish along with some cardamom and ginger, and a nice burst of meyer lemon. The taste stays with you after you finish drinking it.

Not as good on day 2, but still needed a lot of air. More calvados flavors.

25% new oak barrels, which seems like the right amount (I remember the Guigal Doriane feeling like there was too much oak). I felt like I hit it in a good spot—6 or 7 years in.

This is very good. I love it. If I’m being picky, this is about twice the price of many other wines from Condrieu, but is it that much better than, say, a top wine from Andre Perret? I’d love to do some side by side comparisons.

Solid match with Pork roast, turnips, and creamed spinach, but I liked it better on its own. Drank in Riedel Montrachet glass.

Early candidate for wine of the year. (1079 views)
Tasted by ArtF on 12/31/2022 & rated 97 points: Medium gold. Better than just 4 months ago. Beautiful nose, more floral than ripe-fruity. Palate is full, slightly waxy, balanced and elegant. Hint of bitter acidity integrates after 60 minutes. Agree this can be decanted like a great white Burg. Will age but lose the floral, fruity notes that make viognier distinctive. (1064 views)
Tasted by ArtF on 9/17/2022 & rated 95 points: Medium gold. Discrete nose. Still subtly fruity, and full bodied. Firm, balanced and smooth. Acidity is fully integrated. At peak. Best when not too cold. Drink over next 6 months unless stored in cold cellar. (1302 views)
Tasted by merlotsmile on 8/18/2022 & rated 92 points: Vinklubben Vinminnen 10 (1461 views)
Tasted by beatles on 5/31/2022 & rated 95 points: Seems mature. It's deep, has many layers, accents in the minerals, swirfs of honey, is growing very nicely - could surprise in terms of aging.

Tasted by Collector1855 on 5/9/2022 & rated 93 points: From restaurant list in CH. Initially closed and muted, took a good 1h in the decanter to open up. Confirms my recommendation that if a high quality Champagne or White is closed then a proper decant is a must. Step-by-step the wine opened up and displayed beautiful nose of lemon curd, acacia and a touch of oak. Good but not as impressive as the 2011 which I recently had. (1959 views)
Tasted by ArtF on 3/20/2022 & rated 95 points: Best not too cold. Expressive, fruity nose. Acidity is smooth, no longer bitter. This bottle was coming close to peak tonight, for my palate. (1190 views)
Tasted by smctipton on 3/12/2022 & rated 95 points: Rhone night at Wink. From mag. Solidifies this as my favorite Condrieu. Never disappoints. Ripe fruit nose, and not too floral. Fleshy with a hint of smoke on the palate, with plenty of minerality to carry through to a long finish. A step above the la doriane on this night. (1087 views)
Tasted by ArtF on 11/14/2021 & rated 93 points: Medium gold. Clean wafting nose. Palate is full bodied, slightly viscous, dry but with a fruity finish. Acidity is slightly bitter. Overall precise and balanced. (1262 views)
Tasted by wineguy75 on 10/25/2021 & rated 94 points: very different than tasting a year ago. very expressive fruit, well structured. Great wine! (1200 views)
Tasted by Derek Darth Taster on 7/19/2021 & rated 93 points: Asparagus gang over at Maison Dakota. Drank in Gabriel Standart. Just a bit of air in bottle and then bang, ready to go.
Appearance is clear, medium intensity, gold colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of spice, yellow flowers, honeysuckle, ripe peaches. Developed.
On the palate, dry, good high acidity, medium+ alcohol (14%), full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of honeysuckle, chrysanthemum, sweet spices, sweet ripe cream peach, butternut squash, ripe citrus lemon. Vein of stony minerality to the textured long finish.
Very good quality. Always the best Condrieu, or Viognier for that matter, out there. Texture with body and complexity and acidity to match. Drink up and enjoy, no need for further ageing. (1626 views)
Tasted by pbaek on 5/19/2021: Grand vin in the bottle. Serious, structured Condrieu. On green and yellow fruits with stones and spices. Will be very long lived. Almost tastes like Burgundy of pedigree. At Bateau Ivre in Tain. (1372 views)
Tasted by aChave on 5/3/2021 & rated 94 points: Remarkably good. Honey on first impression, with stone fruit and apricot. Lime and vague hints of pineapple at the end. Viscous but clean and delineated. Lingering finish. Superb Condrieu. Great match with spicy pork dish. (1313 views)
Tasted by Rimperial on 3/5/2021 & rated 97 points: Great tasting ( best white wine ever tasted). Great with sushimi (1210 views)
Tasted by dnnk88 on 1/15/2021 & rated 94 points: Park90 with WT & FL!: One of my favourite whites, so had to introduce this to the group tonight. Yellow fruits, citrus, honeysuckle, minerals, figs, white flowers. Complex with a nice finish. Really enjoyed this a lot! Open up (1123 views)
Tasted by wineguy75 on 11/8/2020 & rated 91 points: Pnp. Not very lively and got very little fruit. drank a few nights later after stored with argon gas. Picked up some apricot fruit and drank better than first night. (1289 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 9/10/2020 & rated 92 points: Patio Chilling at Tilia (Tilia, Mpls): Light gold color. Small glass, brief note. Very good, more ctirus and peach, less tropical and flashy than a bottle a couple years ago. Drink up. (1647 views)
Tasted by ddMcM on 7/14/2020: Too old (1289 views)
Tasted by Butty on 5/9/2020 & rated 92 points: Deep golden colour. Quite a muted nose - lemon rind/sherbet, melon, white pepper and a touch of honey. Quiet oily but not heavy - maintains a freshness.

Not obviously Condrieu! Really nice mouth-feel/weight more like a serous Burgundy/Hermitage.

However, I think this is now at the end of its life and needs drinking - I suspect it was better a couple of years back. (1412 views)
Tasted by stefad on 5/8/2020 & rated 94 points: Un vin ciselé, belle acidité, de jolis amers, sur les fleurs blanches, agrumes et amandes - belle bouteille 94+/100 (1352 views)
Tasted by beatles on 4/29/2020 & rated 95 points: Smoky, mineral, somewhat sweet. Very deep and mineral style. Not your old tutti-frutti Condrieu, this is manly stuff, leaning towards white Hermitage. I still remember tasting the 1983 some years ago, brought by JLL, this could go the samme way - it is build to last, I think. Tasted over two days, better on day 2.

Tasted by Frank Schneider on 4/5/2020 & rated 94 points: Superwine !!! I love this stuff. So young but very drinkable. Viognier at its best !!! Not cheap but worth the money !!! (1296 views)

(1316 views)

A pioneer in the renewal of the Condrieu appellation, Domaine Georges Vernay has always made wines of unique style, notable for their finesse, elegance and harmony. Three generations have left the mark of the philosophy on the estate, while perpetuating its traditions in the greatest respect for both vines and winegrowers.

Domaine Georges Vernay lies among steep slopes of the northern Rhône Valley. The property has become a major emblem of Rhône Valley winegrowing, from the time when Georges Vernay saved the Condrieu appellation to the international awards earned by Christine Vernay’s Côte-Rôtie.

At Domaine Georges Vernay, the respect for Nature is apparent in the deep understanding of the past and the full knowledge of the traditional techniques used; the writings of many generations are essential in both the vineyard and the winery. Similarly, while striving to constantly improve quality, the grapes are treated using methods that respect both flora and fauna. The incredibly steep vineyards make mechanisation impossible, so the vines are maintained by hand and without use of residual weed killers or insecticides. In the cellar, winemaking is a constant quest for perfection; every year the working methods are reviewed, and every year, for three generations, the estate strives to define each vintage as finely as possible. Ahead of its time and a defender of northern Rhône Valley values, Domaine Georges Vernay has the advantage of a unique microclimate and exceptional soils.

The estate counts 8 hectares of land in the Condrieu appellation, 2.5 hectares in the Côte-Rôtie appellation, and 1.5 hectares in the Saint-Joseph appellation. Wines are made from two grape varieties: Viognier and Syrah.

The quality of Domaine Georges Vernay’s soils and the special climate of the region release the legendary aromatic finesse of these two great grape varieties.

Northern Rhône

Guide to the wines and appellations of the Northern Rhone Valley -

The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)

Regional History:
Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.

### 2017 vintage ###
