Tasted by Stefanos T. on 8/21/2014 & rated 92 points: Beautiful bottle, fragrant, mature but complex, tannic and long. (2766 views)
Tasted by Stefanos T. on 8/25/2013 & rated 89 points: I have drank this wine quite a few times during the last two years, some bottles were fresher than others. One was fading, another was looking to have bright future, this was in the middle. Bottle variation to my opinion has to be due to storage.
It was fully developed without being tired it had a garnet color and although Ramnista is the most fragrant Greek red when aged, this was a little shy - root day? Still aromas were typical of Xinomavro with ripe plummy fruit, tomato leaves and olive paste. Aging has added a darker fruit dimension with licorice, tar and soy sauce. Almost lean on the palate but structured with ripe tannins for the variety and high acidity. Cleansing finish. (3244 views)
Tasted by Yiannis on 2/9/2013 & rated 91 points: Tasted at Dionysia Wine Fair, Athens, Greece. From double magnum. Light garnet. Excellent nose, typical of an aged xinomavro, with tomato juice, currants, violets and cherry jam. Medium-bodied, fully mature with ripe tannins and high acidity. Fruit still holding very well. Long aftertaste. (3753 views)
Tasted by Stefanos T. on 12/28/2012 & rated 92 points: A classic aged Xinomavro with life ahead of it. Very intense nose with tomato paste, plum and olive leaves. Lean but structured palate with high flavor and good clean finish. Very individual wine, Barbaresco-like. Exceptional! (3591 views)
Tasted by Dokken on 4/15/2012 & rated 92 points: A complete and marvellous wine that shows the variety's potential. Garnet with a tawny rim leading to a mature nose. Complex with leather, tomato, earthy notes and fresh red fruit on the background. Silky on palate with more freshness, bright acidity and medium firm tannins. Elegant drinking excellent now but it will keep for 4-6 years more. Lovely. (4291 views)
Tasted by Stefanos T. on 12/23/2010 & rated 90 points: I opened this bottle from my cellar because recently on a Ramnista vertical tasting the 2000 vintage seemed, surprisinlgy, to me to be fading. So I wanted to check. This was a completely different wine. I do not know how this is possible, one explanation is that it is indeed a different wine... The bottle at the tasting had an english label, my bottle is the normal Greek bottle. Maybe these wines are different cuvees'. In any case the greek lettered bottle I opened today is still young and healthy, it has a wonderful almost perfumed nose with the typical Xinomavro aromas just beggining to take on tertiary aromas - still a lot of fruit there, colour is light and bright transparent ruby with no browning and in the mouth it is medium bodied, surprisingly light but with concentrated flavours. Acidity is high but fruit and alcohol balance it - if one element sticks out is the alcohol (13,5%). Finish is reasonably long. Tannins are there but with no particular astrigency. The wine is ready to drink but it will be getting better for 5 more years, at least. (3279 views)
Tasted by KostaKats on 12/12/2010 & rated 86 points: WSPC Vertical Tasting of Kyr Yianni Ramnista, 29 November 2010. Dark ruby with tawny edges. More typical aromas with this one, olives, sun dried tomatoes, tomato paste, fresh tomatoes with red fruits in the background. Medium body, mouth filling, very smooth palate spoiled by some rough drying tannins which hide the interplay of cherries, tomatoes, olives & sweet spices in the mouth. If those tannins smooth out this will be great in a few years. It was the WOTN for Konstantinos Lazarakis MW. Nice. (2833 views)
Tasted by Stefanos T. on 12/9/2010 & rated 86 points: 1st November vertical 1997-2007 tasting of Ramnista with producer Stelios Boutaris at WSPC in Athens.
Another surprise for me in the evening, this vintage was voted as no.2 after the 2005 while I found it (to my surprise) to be fading. Colour is no indicator of condition for a Xinomavro similarly to a red Burgundy. Here it was turning to brown but had depth. For me the nose was going over the top, reminding me of ashes, balsamic flavours, raisins and ripe plums. Maybe I am wrong about thinking the wine is fading but in any case I do not like this aromatic profile of ashes. In the mouth it had a similar profile with the addition of dried nuts, herbaceousness, mshrooms and earthy tones. The wine reminded me a lot of a Barbaresco 1964 Angelo Gaja himslef presented in Decanter masterclass. Of course he did not present it as a moribund wine, but it did not appeal to me as neither the 2000 Ramnista did. On the other hand the wine was complex and long although tannins seemed to be a little bit out of balance. What was strange to me is that last time I had the 2000 I remeber it tasting nothing like that... (2450 views)
Tasted by Wine Spam on 11/1/2010 & rated 87 points: Similar to previous note, but a trifle less interesting and I suspect that this wine will likely amount to little. Keeping the remaining for a few more years just to be sure. (2650 views)
Tasted by rjonwine@gmail.com on 9/22/2009 & rated 91 points: Greek Wine Birthday Tasting Dinner (Mezes Restaurant, San Francisco, California): Dark red violet color with pale meniscus; nice berry, currant, red fruit nose; tight, structured, tart red fruit, herbal, red currant palate with grip; medium-plus finish 91+ pts. (3525 views)
Tasted by Wine Spam on 2/6/2009 & rated 88 points: Rather interesting wine with mellow spice and fruit aromas. Medium bodied with good acidity and a bit of vegetal character. Still and good grip on the finish. Drink now but may improve for a couple years. (3046 views)
Tasted by Yiannis on 12/27/2008 & rated 87 points: Garnet. Tomato and olive. Mid bodied with dry tannins and nice fruit. Very typical Naoussa Xinomavro. Long finish. Drink now! (3154 views)
Tasted by Barbara B on 11/26/2007 & rated 84 points: Garnet coloured, clear, transparent. Earth and minerals on the nose, along with a little dry paper character. Palate of smoke, wood; dry; harsh acidity; medium level of unrefined tannins. Medium body. Nice bottle and label appearance and gorgeous/expensive cork. Let’s try it again in a few hours…
A few hours later, this is a much better wine. Now it has a much more intense aromatic profile, with bright fruits; harshness has toned down. Pleasant. Benefits greatly from two – three hours in the decanter. (3362 views)
Tasted by Keith Levenberg on 7/30/2006: Xinomavro is a grape with the potential to express itself with as gentle a touch as pinot noir - but Ramnista is a vin de garde, and despite its Burgundian apple-orchard flavor, this wine is way too rough and rustic to come across very elegantly today. There's very little going on aromatically, and the first few glasses show traces of band-aids that, combined with the heavy tannin, make this reminiscent of an adolescent Southern Rhone. I want to like this wine but can't today - hopefully a swan will come out in a few years... (4413 views)
Tasted by AndrewSGHall on 2/26/2006: Good dark blood colour. Nice nose with dried meat, smoke and earth. Very tight fruit. Solid and packed body, good acids - very well put-together and balanced. Slight spice on the finish and hints of cherry fruit. Did well with koftas in tomato sauce over saffron rice. Closed up after a few hours and got even tighter with rigid (but pretty) mineral edges and blood elements. (4512 views)
Tasted by Cicero on 11/15/2005 & rated 90 points: A rich ruby color with a nose of earth, blackberry, pencil dust, leather and black tea. Dried cherry flavors with some spice with smooth acidity but strong tannin. Day 2 showed more fruit. This still has a good structure which will give it life for another 5 years+. It is drinking nicer than my previous tasting earlier this year. Well crafted. (4539 views)
Tasted by Cicero on 5/27/2005 & rated 90 points: double decanted and tasted over a period of about 3 hours: med garnet/ruby color with nose of some earth, cherry and tobacco. in the mouth fruit and chocolate dust were overwhelmed by powerful tannins. acidity was in control but this is clearly locked down. To the uninitiated, this is close to the Barolo of Greece, has great aging potential, and if found should be bought and cellared. i am glad i have another to open in about five years time when the tannin comes into balance and the fruit shows its pretty face that is only hinted at here. Day 2: at last: fruit! and the other elementss of some mint, and tobacco more pronounced. it is amazing how oxidization can offer faux aging. this further convinces me of this wine's potential to age. bravo!
