Tasted by RMapou on 2/10/2018 & rated 85 points: A decent wine, but very dry and, at this point, does not seem to have a lot of fruit. Vineyard is being sold or has been sold, so there will not be any more. (317 views)
Tasted by Chip Merlot on 10/26/2015 & rated 88 points: Not a complex wine but an enjoyable one with friends and food. Perhaps the person giving it a 75 had it too early? It does have the typical Virgina earthiness, which some people no doubt enjoy more than others. (549 views)
Tasted by isaacjamesbaker on 9/17/2015 & rated 87 points: #VAWineChat w/ North Gate Vineyard: Vibrant but deep ruby color. Juicy black and red plum fruit on the nose, mixed in with cedar shavings, light roast coffee, loamy soil. Tangy acid meets fine-grained tannins, making this an easy-drinking wine with a delightfully fresh appeal. The fruit is juicy and tart (black cherry, red and black plums, wild blueberry). Lots of mocha, cedar, roasted coffee and cinnamon sticks… hints of loam and dried violets. I love the freshness and vibrancy of this wine. Probably not one to store for more than a few years, but a delightful Virginia Merlot. Another example of how Merlot kills it in Virginia. The wine is aged for 17 months in 25% new French oak and includes 10% Petit Verdot. $19 (679 views)
Tasted by CdrCabernet on 7/7/2015 & rated 75 points: Inky purple color with faint aroma of wood and concord grape. Odd mouth feel, perhaps the fullest-bodied wine I have ever tasted. Tobacco and leather notes on the palate leave an astringent aftertaste with a rather short finish. Better than most Virginia wines, but definitely a Virginia wine. (471 views)

Merlot

Merlot is a dark blue–colored wine grape variety, that is used as both a blending grape and for varietal wines. The name Merlot is thought to be a diminutive of merle, the French name for the blackbird, probably a reference to the color of the grape. Its softness and "fleshiness", combined with its earlier ripening, makes Merlot a popular grape for blending with the sterner, later-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon, which tends to be higher in tannin.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.
