Community Tasting Notes (average 85.7 pts. and median of 87 pts. in 25 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by smenzies on 8/30/2020 & rated 88 points: Perhaps in a trough now .. without the kerosene aged characters but losing fruit .. maybe try in a few years (1224 views)
Tasted by whitmanlholt on 6/2/2020: No formal notes, but this is a nice basic level Riesling. It had many of the trademarks, including lemon, petrol, rocks, and acidic bite. It is an enjoyable wine — a nice, bistro-styled beverage to pair with a casual meal and not too much thought. I’d drink these up, and with summer on the way that should be pretty easy to do. (1283 views)
 Tasted by SAND on 1/18/2020 & rated 87 points: A private wine dinner: Sugar 3.7 g/l, acidity 7.85 g/l, alcohol 12.7%.
NOSE: Surprisingly developed Riesling nose with citrus and some mineral / petroleum aromas.
TASTE: Mature, fruity with several mature Riesling notes. At its peak now, would be my guess. A rather light vintage of this wine. (1588 views)
Tasted by MarcEBeaudoin on 11/3/2018: Bright and clean - some mineral and lemon. Not zesty, but this isn't the Mosel either. Its tonight and fairly closed, good Alsatian style. Lighter, firm and a fairly long finish. Nice wine, probably pulled it too early. (1780 views)
Tasted by deetz on 7/14/2017 & rated 89 points: Aromas of pinenuts, hazelnuts, Meyers lemon, key lime, white flowers, and white peach. Zesty on the nose, but doesn't have quite as much acid on the palate as I would have expected. Palate is a touch flat, but still pleasant. Overall, this is a delicious wine but without particular complexity. For true price, this is a very good bottle. (2752 views)
Tasted by AudunG on 3/10/2017 & rated 84 points: Foral and mineral aromas. Light, transparent and savoury in the mouth. Definitely not a blockbuster, but quite delicious. Performed better now than two years ago. (1937 views)
Tasted by SAND on 2/4/2017 & rated 87 points: Nose: Lots of lime and white peaches, some gooseberry, orange water and a hint of flinty smoke (88p).
Taste: The arrival is citrusy, with lemon and lime notes, medium bodied with the residual sweetness perfectly balancing the rich acidity into a dry taste experience. There are quite a b it of minerality here too and what appears to be a good backbone of fruit and acidity (88p).
This 3 year old Riesling is just getting out of it's initial, almost infantile stage but is still very young. In my book this has a long way to go to reach anything resembling maturity and should have a long and interesting life (drink until 2030?). It is currently neither one dimensional nor quite complex, but I recognise the typical Hugel development pattern - this is a good wine, still in the making.
Currently this is a strong 87 because of its young and unfinished character but I would expect this to evolve into 89 or perhaps even 90 points with time. (1938 views)
Tasted by Butzemann on 8/17/2016 & rated 86 points: light colour, does not smell of much, perhaps of melon and in the background of apricot, dry, but not in a tart way, nice residual sugar, not much acidity, medium body, in the mouth melon, some nuts and some sharp sourness, in the aftertaste nuts and sourness, short finish, I think this Riesling lacks acidity and is somewhat dull, for 16 Euros I simply expect more bang for the buck. Would not buy again. (1699 views)
Tasted by Christine Havens on 7/26/2016 & rated 89 points: Hugel is always solid, and reasonably priced. It was my pleasure to taste this gem at a Wines of Alsace dinner in Portland. White flowers, white peaches and a quaint dab of kerosene, this is classic Alsatian Riesling. It boasts a "straight backbone", as our dinner host Thierry Fritsch described it, inlaid with stone fruit, and feels dry, even with 7.45 g/l residual sugar, enough to give it lushness and depth. This is one producer that is never disappointing. 12/4% ABV | Sample (1951 views)
Tasted by depechemoroder on 6/2/2016 & rated 88 points: Textbook Alsatian Riesling with a lovely apple and cirtus nose with an underlying flinty quality. Good acidity and depth of flavour though lacking a certain oomph. (1097 views)
Tasted by cuffthis on 4/9/2016 & rated 88 points: Vivid gold in color, this wine reveals subtle minerals, ginger and citrus on the nose. The mouth feel brings brisk acidity and subtle sweetness. The finish is a little short but brings out the minerals well.

Purchased for $13US/375ml, this was an excellent pairing with our first course at a local BYOB. (1136 views)
Tasted by wabi47 on 3/10/2016 & rated 88 points: Fuji Apple nose; crisp quince, apple and pear with great lime undertones and fine acidity. Softer and less interesting on day two (1058 views)
Tasted by Zipra on 2/10/2016 & rated 88 points: Druvig doft av äpple med inslag av honung, citrus och mineral.

Lätt, frisk, druvig och fruktig smak av äpple men inslag av citron. Hög syra. Lite oljig. (1189 views)
Tasted by SAND on 10/31/2015: Nose: Fruity. Lemon and lime with the slightest hint of peaches, some minerality.
Taste: Clean, pure fruit, medium bodied, fresh acidity and a somewhat closed core.
Drinkable now but to me this a typical (too) young quality Riesling, which I expect will benefit greatly even from one, but preferable 2 - 3 years further cellaring and will last for 10-15 (drink 2016-2025). (984 views)
Tasted by AudunG on 9/11/2015 & rated 78 points: A simple Alsace riesling. Fullbodied and fruity, but lacks finesse and structure. A bit disappointing from this producer. (953 views)
Tasted by Lloyds on 6/16/2015 & rated 65 points: Nothing wrong, but a bit dull. Can't remember that well. (960 views)
Tasted by CamWheeler on 5/12/2015 & rated 86 points: Negociants Australia New Release Tasting: Light peach and herb. Palate is medium bodied. There is little excitement here but it carries well enough and is fine to drink. (1655 views)

Citation from a comment by John H. Trombley on Hugel wines labeled "Grossi Laüi":

These wines come from lieu-dit(s) located within [a] Grand Cru vineyard(s), but were not labeled with their respective vineyard names (a requirement for Alsace Grand Cru AOC.) As a matter of fact, this seems to have been deliberately avoided, purportedly for reasons given below.

IT MUST BE EMPHASIZED THAT NOT EVERY WINE MADE IN A GRAND CRU VINEYARD IS ENTITLED TO THE AOC ALSACE GRAND CRU BECAUSE THERE ARE SEVERAL OTHER REQUIREMENTS, NOT LEAST YIELD AND permitted VARIETIES.

NOTE THAT what is claimed by Robert Parker as an Alsatian-dialect trivalent for the Burgundian 'Grand Cru' or the German 'Grosses Gwächs', that is, Grossi Laüi, seems to have no official standing in the wine law that I could find as of this date. The Hugels are knows to be among a handful of powerful estates who, for various reasons, have strongly resisted participation in the Alsace Grand Cru system, and its efforts at promoting a separate system probably should be seen as self-promotional, in the view of some. In 2017, those resisters were beginning to work with the system, and it is expected that this will influence the labeling identity of subsequent vintages. I expect this may cause some confusion as to wine identities.

In Cellar Tracker, it is strongly suggested that wines not be listed as Grand Cru unless the maker has chosen to make that label claim, and is prepared to defend it to the Appellation authorities. However, exceptions may arise, and will undoubtedly be structured into the CT infomatics.
