Community Tasting Notes (average 91.3 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 44 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Gregmonroe on 2/7/2024: WWC - NJH1122 (Fort Worth Club): Tasted blind - A bit of a muted nose, but honey and stone fruit, with some white fruit/apple; a taste of well aged champagne, without bubbles. Good, though not as good or lively as the Aubert before it. Guessed either a 2009 chardonnay, or a central coast Rhone-style white. (176 views)
Tasted by AP MD on 1/5/2021 & rated 94 points: Deep golden color but not oxidized. Nose initially full of lemongrass and apple. Quickly muted. Palate still rich with lemon, apple pomegranate and butter. Drink within the next year or two. Definitely not too old to drink, but I wouldn't wait too much longer. (588 views)
Tasted by Erics Aunt on 9/23/2020: Just opened a bottle of this wine with some trepidation because of its age but I was pleasantly surprised by how wonderful the wine tasted! It has aged well, still carrying hints of oak with a lovely finish. The wine is a golden color now, as I had expected. Still a good bit of life left in this wine! (648 views)
Tasted by nzinkgraf on 6/15/2018: 14.9% ABV. Fresh candied pineapple aromas. Medium gold color. Some honied notes to the fringes. On the palate, some snappiness. Maybe some of that machine oil note found in Hanzell Estate Chard. Oak is receded, but still has a little circus peanut note to the finish. Really holding on very nicely. (1438 views)
Tasted by Kayentacellars on 3/7/2014: Served at dinner party (4496 views)
Tasted by bibendumrrb on 11/10/2013 & rated 90 points: Need to drink it now! (4554 views)
Tasted by windypinot on 7/30/2011 & rated 92 points: Toasty oak and butter, butterscotch and almond notes; balanced like you would expect from Pahlmeyer; usually love the age on these, but agree the fading fruit keeps this wine from usual classic level (5509 views)
Tasted by BernieMSY on 4/24/2011 & rated 88 points: Just ok (5416 views)
Tasted by tfesmgk on 3/6/2011 & rated 90 points: Still good but a little past it's prime. Lemon & citrus, buttery but not too oaky. Still very nice. (5055 views)
Tasted by Beachrooster on 11/14/2010 & rated 88 points: golden straw color. Aromas of lemon, flowers, and, straw. Medium weight , but not built to last. Fruit has fallen off and is slightly oxidized. Short to medium length on finish. Drink up before its too late! (3101 views)
Tasted by wineshaman on 9/19/2010 & rated 92 points: Pineapple, lemon, and butter in the nose, very creamy smooth butterly palate with lemon, grapefruit and a little toast. Very different that the Kistler tasted, however a delight to drink. Six years old, holding but i would drink up. (2999 views)
Tasted by isdblm@lsu.edu on 5/3/2008 & rated 92 points: Tasted by vionblm on 5/3/2008, with L and Margaret--luscious and creamy, just as I recall it; nice balance of oak, pear and apple. (3371 views)
Tasted by grrrpor on 3/8/2008 & rated 92 points: as others have noted.... delicious (3441 views)
Tasted by plitton on 10/19/2007: Rich with lots of cream and oak. Flavor profile in the vicinity of Kistler and Peter Michael chardonnay. (3760 views)
Tasted by VinoTx on 10/1/2007 & rated 90 points: Well balanced with the oak coming first and then some nice fruit to keep it in check. (3741 views)
Tasted by thenapalist on 9/26/2007 & rated 94 points: Nice solid enjoyable California Chard with the sweet taste of brown sugar, tropical fruit and toasted oak. A tamed down version of an Aubert that lacks just a bit on the nose and palate. This one runs the risk of diminishing fruit over the next 2-3 years though. (4041 views)
Tasted by BWebb on 8/3/2007: drank with pete dameris with lamb and cous cous - very nice first bottle followed w '97 brunello (4006 views)
Tasted by jeff nowak on 5/28/2007 & rated 93 points: from magnum. if you like this style, you will be pleased. consistently excellent, i like this wine despite the oak and butter. a guilty pleasure. (4168 views)
Tasted by NotNYC on 4/4/2007 & rated 90 points: Big balanced, softer side of CA Chard. Great with shellfish. (3941 views)
Tasted by otisabdul on 3/28/2007 & rated 92 points: Purchased off the wine list for $120 at The Waterfront restaurant in Ma'alea Harbor, Maui. Always wanted to try a Pahlmeyer chard and this did not disappoint. Nose of toasted butternut squash and jasmine blossoms. Lithe and spritely. Light-bodied but powerful. Green apple and lemon flavors with a heatlhy but well proportioned dose of new oak imparting a toffee note. Ample acidity to cut through the various cream sauces used in our entrees. Impressive chard. (3993 views)
Tasted by BWebb on 1/28/2007 & rated 90 points: great big chardonay that wins you over with its complexity with excellent character displaying butter and oak in just the right consistency. (4117 views)
Tasted by cjstrunk on 1/20/2007 & rated 92 points: Shared this our friend over a long weekend of dinners and wine. They have not tried this producer and I cannot seem to stop drinking this wine. Everytime I have it, I cannot wait until I drink it again. This is a bigger California Chardonnay with balanced oak, nice tropical fruits on the palate, great finish and an oily smaooth texture in your mouth. If I had patients, this wine would last longer. I will buy more. (4085 views)
Tasted by cjstrunk on 1/8/2007 & rated 93 points: Impressive Chardonnay, yet still young and a bit tight. Nice balance with the fruit and the acidity and held together with noticeable oak, but not over powering. I believe this wine will last 6-8 years, but it does improve when it has been open for more time. Can drink now or hold. GREAT bottle!!! (4143 views)
Tasted by rsepulve on 1/4/2007 & rated 92 points: Take my rating with a grain of salt as I don't have a lot of experience with CA chards. Still this might be one of my favorites behind the Aubert chards. It is rich and buttery with tropical fruit aromas and flavors with some mineral notes lurking underneath. (4137 views)
Tasted by Mike V on 11/24/2006 & rated 90 points: Very oak driven next to the Aubert Lauren (4249 views)

Pahlmeyer

Producer website

Jayson Pahlmeyer, recently joined by his daughter Cleo Pahlmeyer, have been producing highly sought-after, seductive, hedonistic wines since 1986. Pahlmeyer's flagship wine is the Proprietary Red, a Napa Valley Bordeaux blend. Chardonnay, Merlot and Pinot Noir round out this stunning portfolio. These wines are produced from exceptional mountain vineyards in the Napa Valley and Sonoma Coast, including the Pahlmeyer family’s Waters Ranch (Atlas Peak AVA) and Wayfarer Farm (Fort Ross/Seaview AVA). These vineyards, coupled with winemakers Kale Anderson and Bibiana Gonzalez Rave's passion and talent, turn out wines with power and finesse.

Chardonnay

The Chardonnay Grape

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
