Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.5 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 176 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by VinhoVerde on 3/18/2024 & rated 91 points: Deep ruby color. Licorice. And dark cherry bouquet. Rich flavor with loads of fruit. Ripe, complex, and well-balanced. Smooth finish. (2058 views)
Tasted by Arcturus on 2/1/2024 & rated 92 points: 92. Nose- initial impression was iodine but after a few hours I’m leaning more toward pine needles. Fabulous textured palate of black and red fruits. Solid finish. A Good Rancia. I’ve been hit or miss different vantages of rancia, this was a hit. (2333 views)
Tasted by Fugu Me on 12/25/2023 flawed bottle: Corked (2300 views)
Tasted by JAKE1 on 12/25/2023 & rated 92 points: we liked this a lot very smooth tannins but still some and graphite and dark berry fruit , could last longer (2111 views)
Tasted by beatles on 12/10/2023 & rated 93 points: Could - an probably should have - waited a bit, but this wine is very nice now. Dry, classic, vertical, oak completely integrated. Chocolate, tobacco here - and very ripe fruit. Will keep (2863 views)
Tasted by CWilliam on 11/27/2023: Has improved since last tasting ~ 6 months ago. Decanted and then paired with NY strips about 30 minutes later. Brown/red color. On nose, sweet & sour cherry with tobacco and other savory notes including iodine, orange rind & cedar. Palate consistent with nose but fruit was brighter than nose. Medium body/acidity and integrated tannins with a long finish. 93-94 range.

Very enjoyable. (2806 views)
Tasted by Rheingau84 on 11/25/2023 & rated 93 points: Let it breathe for an hour, then it’s a nice Riserva, but better with food than solo. (2248 views)
Tasted by Mr. Montrachet on 11/24/2023 & rated 93 points: Starting its drinking window now. Lovely pronounced cherry, deep and brooding, some eucalyptus. Very uplifting acidity. Tannins give structure but are approachable now - suggesting you can cellar this much longer if you want. Unfortunates my only bottle. (2209 views)
Tasted by Bonesetter on 11/23/2023 & rated 92 points: Great sangiovese! Slightly darker in colour than expected. Strong cherry/mint/leather nose. Similarly, sour cherry palate, with a long finish, and great acidity throughout. (2101 views)
Tasted by Bob H on 11/5/2023: Wow, is this drinking great right now! Just pure, focused Chianti deliciousness 👍. I just had initial glasses of the 2010, ‘11 and ‘12, and based off the first looks, this wine is a clear winner. And I really liked the 2010, so not too shabby.

Vibrant acidity on the palate, pristine red fruit on the nose, this is a real beauty. (2399 views)
Tasted by MicklethePickle on 10/16/2023 & rated 93 points: My last bottle, and one of the best, even on pop and poor. At 10 years of age, still sporting a strong, dark red color with very few signs of age. lots of viscosity too. aromas of leather and earth, but certainly not devoid of fruit either. This is evolving into a nice wine as it begins to exhibit tertiary aromas. Rich ripe black cherry flavors. Long dry finish. Has become what I had hoped it would become. I just drank too many bottles. Too early perhaps. No hurry on this. Should last for decades. 5-12-17-9: 93/100. (2805 views)
Tasted by bhouk on 10/13/2023: A very strong showing after exposure to a little air. Blood, red fruits, leather, still with a healthy dose of unresolved tannin — plenty of room for positive evolution. Should be an interesting follow in the coming years. (2272 views)
Tasted by Portland Seth on 10/11/2023 & rated 93 points: Improved with an hour+ of air. Black fruits, bitter herbs, leather, tar, dank basement. I love chalky tannins but the subtle mildew flavor is dangerously close to TCA. Bold and delicious. (2547 views)
Tasted by Buick455 on 10/6/2023 & rated 91 points: Medium dark red/black'ish color. No sign of age. Palate is red/black berries, cherries, some spice. Tannins, acid. However not as delicate and complex as previous vintages. However a solid performance. (2445 views)
Tasted by Dj6544 on 8/28/2023 & rated 90 points: Very angular and structured, austere even. Really tight tannin strangling the fruit, this is not a rich, dark effort like a lot of other Rancias I’ve had. Some nice herbal notes though. Really not sure where this is headed. This could unfurl with time and pick up some nice secondary notes supported by that muscular structure, or the fruit will get totally swamped with tannin. Think I have 10 left so sure I will find out! (3029 views)
Tasted by D_RICH on 8/24/2023: No contemporaneous notes. Second of three bottles. Decanted and served immediately. No surprise, this could really have used more time or more air. Judgment reserved. ADDENDUM: Day 2. Really stinky, like a basement floor. This was not noticeable last night. Could this also be corked? (2740 views)
Tasted by VinoJames on 7/30/2023 & rated 92 points: Big, full bodied and tasty. Dark cherry and tobacco and a bit tight with tannins on the finish. Has at least 5 - 10 years in it. (3044 views)
Tasted by BGK810 on 7/23/2023 & rated 92 points: Dark cherry fruit, earth, leather, still has great acidity and some tannins. Many years left. (3011 views)
Tasted by pinkhouse on 7/18/2023 & rated 91 points: A powerful wine that seems to be just entering its drinking window. We decanted an hour and the wine was at its best hours later so plenty of aging potential. Impeccable balance, linear, super long finish and loaded with flavour. I suspect a few more years in cellar will do wonders and/or more extended decanter time. (3126 views)
Tasted by loganchambers on 7/8/2023 & rated 94 points: I really liked this - super charming and fun to drink - what more can you ask for? Dried cherry, baked red fruit, vanilla…really good with porchetta & scalloped potatoes. (3064 views)
Tasted by t_moderne on 7/2/2023 & rated 91 points: Pop and poured and enjoyed with food (a variety of pizza from the Ooni, in case you were wondering).
Dark purple-garnet color.
Nose of Tuscany - red clay, some sour cherries and hint of mushroom and balsamic.
Good fruit. Nice sour cherry, tangy notes. The mushroom gives a richness nicely balanced with the acidity. Slight hint of oak.
Enjoyable. (3127 views)
Tasted by KarlO_CC on 5/16/2023 & rated 93 points: Really dark. Expressive nose cherries and secondary aromas ala tar. Full bodied and powerful palate - elegant long and structured after taste. Top notch and drink now + 5 years . (3650 views)
Tasted by CWilliam on 4/3/2023 & rated 92 points: Drank over 2 nights (better on night 2). Black in the glass. On nose, sweet/sour cherry and tobacco. On palate, blackberry, black cherry and cedar/savory notes. medium body, medium+ acidity, medium tannins and long finish. 92+/- (3869 views)
Tasted by galewskj on 2/10/2023 & rated 92 points: Pop and pour, drank half the bottle over 3 hours. This is beautifully complex now, albeit in a youthful way. A lively red-fruited chianti with tar and earth. I really should let these sit longer but at least I have 2 more. (4105 views)
Tasted by ploher on 1/14/2023: Blood / iron, dark cherries, balsamico, some flowery notes especially after some hours in the decanter; savory, masculine and rustic palate with huge, dusty tannins and immense structure still. Good complexity and lovely fruit. In short: classic young Rancia. Promising vintage I think. Best to hold for 5+ years, but of course it's a joy already. 17.5+/20 (4077 views)

Producer Location (Google Maps)

This historic estate, which dates to the Middle Ages, was purchased by current owner Giuseppe Mazzocolin's father-in-law, Domenico Poggiali, in 1966. Winemaker Franco Bernabei draws on vines more than 50 years old from three vineyards-Fontalloro in Chianti Classico and the Casalino and Arcidossino vineyards in Chianti Colle Senesi-for this red. Because it straddles two DOCG zones, the wine is classified as Indicazione Geo-grafica Tipica (IGT). After fermentation, it was aged in barriques for 20 months.

Sangiovese

SANGIOVESE: (Pronounced "sahn-joh-vhe-se").
Sangiovese - Italy's claim to fame, the pride of Tuscany. Traditionally made, the wines are full of cherry fruit, earth, and cedar. It produces Chianti (Classico), Rosso di Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino, Rosso di Montepulciano, Montefalco Rosso, and many others. Sangiovese is also the backbone in many of the acclaimed, modern-styled "Super-Tuscans", where it is blended with Bordeaux varietals (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc) and typically aged in French oak barrels, resulting a wine primed for the international market in the style of a typical California cabernet: oaky, high-alcohol, and a ripe, jammy, fruit-forward profile.[16]

Semi-classic grape grown in the Tuscany region of Italy. Used to produce the Chianti and other Tuscan red wines. Has many clonal versions, two of which seem to predominate. The Sangiovese Grosso clone Brunello variety is used for the dark red, traditionally powerful and slow-maturing "Brunello di Montalcino" wine. The other is the Sangiovese Piccolo, also known under the historical synonym name Sangioveto, used for standard Chianti Classico DOC wines. Old vine derived wine is often used in the better versions, needing several years ageing to reach peak. A third clone, Morellino, is used in a popular wine blend with the same name found in the southern part of the province. Recent efforts in California with clones of this variety are very promising, producing medium-bodied reds with rich cherry or plumlike flavors and aromas. Among the available clonal versions are R6 and R7, derived from the Montalcino region of Italy, having average productivity/ripening and producing small berries on medium size clusters. R10 and R24 are well-recommended. R23, listed as deriving from the Emilia-Romagna region, has good vigor with medium-small clusters with earlier ripening. R102 derives from the Montepulciano region and reported to have average vigor with moderate productivity that results in higher sugar levels and good acidity from medium-small berries on medium-small clusters. Has synonym name of Nielluccio where grown in Corsica.
