Nose is brioche, chalk, honeycomb, crisp pears. Good acidity and saline on the finish. That could describe any decent champagne; this one has restrained elegance. Some nice toasty complexity starting to develop but will likely never overwhelm. With breathing, smoky hazelnuts slowly coming out and eventually take over— a clear BdB sign. While I’d be reluctant to turn down a glass of Krug or Bollinger, I’ve noticed that my taste is swinging much more towards vintage blanc de blancs. 2008 was an awesome vintage and this has all the right stuff. Will it beat 2008 Comtes de Champagne? Uh, no, but it’s also less than 1/3 the price. I will be interesting to compare it, however, with my bottles of ‘08 Bolly Grand Année. Something tells me this may go longer? (888 views) | | Tasted by grub94 on 10/27/2023 & rated 92 points: Great Champs for heavier, flavorful apps. Good acidity and more palate weight than many top Chaps like Taitt CC or Cristal. Nice brioche, stony lemon rind, pear, full finish. Glad to have more bottles and mags. Will live another 10 yrs, esp the mags. (792 views) | | Tasted by jnewman77 on 10/21/2023: This continues to drink well in 750 format; seems mature though no signs of fading; an added layer of richness and honey with lemon, pear, wet stone. Good intensity to the flavor and lovely depth. (807 views) | | Tasted by jnewman77 on 6/2/2023: Similar; very enjoyable; honey and brioche with minerality and a lovely interplay between richness and freshness; drinking well now, but no rush (1033 views) | | Tasted by jnewman77 on 4/9/2023: Opened to try another bottle since I just bought more; good stuff and good value; has some richness and brioche initially, gets fresher throughout the evening and has very good depth. Drinks well now, but seems like it should age well for quite a while yet. (1133 views) | | Tasted by Tree512 on 1/7/2023 & rated 92 points: Tastes like the Les Mesnil NV but with more length, spine, and depth. Great now but should age for a long time. Best with food. (581 views) | | Tasted by DougLee on 12/24/2022 & rated 90 points: Flinty, crisp saline and brioche notes on the palate with late infusion of grapefruit, lemon, and apple core. Young with plenty in reserve. (587 views) | | Tasted by jnewman77 on 5/31/2022: This is the Rare Wine Co cuvee from this coop; this was young, but absolutely delicious. Classic Mesnil with loads of minerality and saline hints, lemon, green apple, and floral notes. The palate was brisk and tension filled, but still open enough to be super tasty. The finish tightened up a touch with some austerity from the acidity, but all in all this was very good and should age very gracefully. (678 views) | | Tasted by casoe on 12/26/2018 & rated 92 points: Confirm my score and notes from the beginning of 2018. Elegant, long, mineral and very high in acidity. Really good with food now, but I think it will be more balanced in 3-5 years. (1244 views) | | Tasted by casoe on 4/28/2018 & rated 92 points: Very nice and mineral style, green apples, nutty and extremely elegant mousse. Has improved since last year and will improve more with some extra bottle age. (1340 views) |

France - When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of consistent quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them. Champagne - The French region of Champagne (including the cities of Rheims, Épernay, and Aÿ) was the first region in the world to make sparkling wine in any quantity. Today, the name of the region is synonymous with the finest of all sparkling wines, and wine-making traditions of Champagne have become role models for sparkling wine producers, worldwide. Surprisingly, the region of Champagne is now responsible for only one bottle in 12 of all sparkling wine produced. Styles of champagne range in sweetness ranging from an extra brut or brut 0, to the basic brut to demi sec to doux; some houses produce single vintage champagnes and others produce non-vintage (or incorporate wines/grapes of multiple vintages), often to preserve a specific taste; combinations of grape varietals; and colors, including a rosé. There are several sub-appellations, including the Valley of the Marnes river running from Épernay west, Massif de Saint-Thierry north and west of Rheims, Valley of the Ardre, the Mountains of Rheims (between Rheims and Épernay), Côte des Blancs, Côte de Sézanne, and Côte des Bar in the South. Champagne wine only uses three grape varietals (cépages): Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier.Champagne Grand CruChampagne |
