Community Tasting Notes (average 89.7 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 138 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by der Schmecker on 12/26/2023 & rated 88 points: 3 liter magnum. A certain funkiness reduced my enjoyment of the wine. Nonetheless, we emptied the bottle by the end of the night. (494 views)
Tasted by CabIPA on 12/16/2023 & rated 92 points: Paired with spaghetti marinara. Weird nose blew off after 1 hour slow ox. Very good. Oak really shines. (412 views)
Tasted by elevwine on 12/3/2023 & rated 90 points: Maybe a $35 bottle is not a “value wine” but that is how I think of MVW. Everything I like in a Napa cab is here - blackberry and dark cherry fruit, hints of tobacco and cedar, some earthiness. Solid Napa Cab with some real character at a reasonable price. (428 views)
Tasted by Night Train on 8/11/2023 & rated 91 points: A couple years ago, several trackers' notes indicated that this wine was way too oaky and overextracted. I had a bottle back then and more-or-less concurred. However, I suspected (hoped) that it would settle down with more time. Boy, it feels great to be right for once. In the summer of 2023, this wine is borderline outstanding. Oak is barely noticeable, and it's not jammy in the least. Terrific balance with no rough edges. Medium body seamlessly leads to a super finish. This bottle set me back $33, and it was my go-to "budget" Napa cabernet for several years. Of course, the current release is priced at around $63, so "budget" no longer applies. (642 views)
Tasted by Trump2016 on 7/31/2022 & rated 92 points: excellent
The wine looks garnet colored. The legs are medium. There is light sediment in the bottle. (1812 views)
Tasted by manny651 on 7/29/2022 & rated 91 points: aged great, beautiful fruit (1426 views)
Tasted by Night Train on 9/26/2021 & rated 86 points: Dominated by oak and tannins, but I think it's in a "dumb" phase right now. The fruit has faded a lot faster than the other components, leaving it out of balance. If (and it's admittedly a pretty big "if") the oak and tannins recede enough, balance should be restored, and there will be peace in the valley (or, I guess, on the mountain). I'm guessing it will deserve a higher score in another couple years (and it certainly has the structure to go that long). (2289 views)
Tasted by GoBlue2002 on 9/21/2021 & rated 89 points: Much better chilled.
Ready to go on opening - actually I preferred it on opening before a decant.
Pepper, spice, black fruit, dried fruit, earth. Tannins on the finish. Should have consumed this earlier - fruit is receeding and the structure just doesnt have silky tannins or tertiary flavors to make it interesting enough. (2137 views)
Tasted by vinus_operandi on 9/12/2021 & rated 85 points: i think it's best to be honest. this is just over ripe oak juice pure and simple. fire the winemaker. that's job one. nothing else needs to be said. i am not disappointed, i am pissed off. i do not consider this a certain style of wine. i consider this an abomination and as one other reviewer said, "everything that's wrong with napa valley!" i will give the rest of my bottles away. (2033 views)
Tasted by bravo.solares on 1/27/2021 & rated 85 points: Everything that is wrong with Napa. I realize this is inexpensive stuff (for Napa), but even if it were $25 (and I think this must retail for $35-40) it’d be a hard pass for me. An oak slushie. Beaver wine. (1872 views)
Tasted by ppandian on 10/21/2020 & rated 87 points: Decent - not sufficient balance. Quite tannic but receding fruit. (2164 views)
Tasted by DB Lawton on 6/26/2020 & rated 91 points: Loved both bottles that were polished off at the great 2020 Graduprom party. Tannins still robust and dark fruit just right. Wish I had more of this. Still time to develop for another couple of years. (2054 views)
Tasted by srh on 5/4/2020: Uncorked ≈110 min prior to 1st taste; Private Preserve after Day 1

N: RIPE berries with notes of brnyrd & hints of iron, the brnyrd evolving into leather with addt'l air/swirling?

P: Med body; NICE, ALMOST swtish frt met by an astringent pucker which quite resolves as it morphs into a LONG, balanced finish with a pleasant tangy/swtness (& OCCASIONAL *hints* of a very, VERY slight bitterness) to the FEW, innocuously firming tannins. For now & through '22, poss 2 yrs > *IF* stored better than my POORLY stored bottle. :( Seemed to show better by itself than it did with the night's Grilled Lamb Chops, though it paired admirably with the Grilled Artichokes in Spicy Marinade side. My VG+/EXC-, arguably trending towards the higher for QPR. // Day 2: Slightly closed, but intensity lurking. Frt held admirably, the relatives particularly enjoying it with their Pizza (thin crust), it also pairing acceptably with my Calzone & Stromboli, both with Marinara Sauce. 95 pts winereviewonline (Whitley), and 93, 92 (2x), & 91 (2x) winealign.com , + other scores & a medal on wine-searcher's Tasting Notes pg. [As of early May '20, wine-searcher still shows 1 source @ $42].

Note: Also tasted 11/5/16 & 1/30/20 (2833 views)
Tasted by lovemycab on 5/1/2020: Perhaps it was a bad bottle, but this tasted like virtually nothing. It wasn’t an obviously flawed bottle as there was some tannin and fruit but very little. All 5 of us drank and felt like we weren’t drinking anything. It was a gift and assume it was from Costco. (2005 views)
Tasted by elevwine on 4/22/2020 & rated 90 points: Generally seems to be an entry-level big Napa Cab. Usually available at Costco for under $30. Not too fruity, good tannic structure, a bit dusty, a little eucalyptus. Shortish finish, a little bitter vegetal taste in the background keeps it from scoring any higher. (1677 views)
Tasted by srh on 1/30/2020: Uncorked ≈90 min prior to 1st taste

N: CLOSED; Cherries with notes of toast?

P: Med body; NICE, almost swtish frt met by an astringent pucker which seamlessly transitions into a LONG, balanced finish with an intriguingly PLEASANT bitter/swt choc veneer to the firming tannins that work quite well with food. A poorly stored bottle of this :( , I see NO reason why a better stored example wouldn't make its 10th. 14.5% ABV; My EXC- as tasted, & I'm guessing quite poss EXC *if* it had been better stored. 95 pts winereviewonline (Whitley), and 93, 92 (2x), & 91 (2x) winealign.com , + other scores & a medal on wine-searcher's Tasting Notes pg. [As of early Mar '20, wine-searcher still shows 2 sources @ $35 & $42].

Note: 1st tasted on 11/5/16. (1915 views)
Tasted by Tonyboons33 on 1/4/2020 & rated 89 points: Very nice value, drinks better than it's price point. These are in a good place right now and opened up alongside the 2012. The 2013 had a little less fruit and more earth, but better structure with the 2012 being more fruit forward and jammy/vanilla. Table was split as to which they liked better. (1468 views)
Tasted by MarkSegal on 12/25/2019 & rated 92 points: Very nice mountain wine.chocloate, some cherry. Quite smooth, really enjoyed it. (1367 views)
Tasted by WineAttic on 10/15/2019 & rated 92 points: I really liked this. It's been in the cellar for some time now and as an orphan, I figured it would go good with a chicken parm tonight. This was better than I'd anticipated per the reviews. I do think it's peaking or on the decline even. It was REALLY nice for what it costs. It's too bad that a bottle of this quality starts at $50 in current vintages of Cabs. (1997 views)
Tasted by Colorado3G on 10/3/2019 & rated 91 points: Hitting its window and I don't think it will evolve much more....was a bit worried as I had some cork seepage - but all was fine. A bit of sediment too. (1799 views)
Tasted by Winowhyno on 8/4/2019 & rated 90 points: Great nose...fruity and smokey....very dry....great deal at $26.00...only one left (1915 views)
Tasted by pdbender on 5/26/2019 & rated 88 points: ThreeDayWineReviewGuy has an interesting concept which I think is extremely comprehensive and educational, but who has the time to create this platform for every bottle they drink? The 2013 Mt.Veeder is a quite ordinary offering from this consistent winery but very tasty nonetheless.
I've been disappointed with the last few vintages from Mr. Veeder and this at least caught my attention with some youthful tannins, good balance and better than average concentration. But from an excellent vintage, I would expect a little better from this winery, and I'm not getting it.
There is a lack of excitement and intensity that I used to attain from
Mt. Veeder cabs in the past and this seems to be slightly below my expectations. Don't get me wrong, it's a strong offering, but I expect more.
Mt. Veeder cabs that seems to have been lost in the wind of late. (1615 views)
Tasted by joseph120 on 4/19/2019: After PnP, finish was really rough, with unrefined tannins. Decanting for an hour helped somewhat but the unrefined finish still dominated an underwhelming mid-palate. Certainly this is not expensive for a Napa Cab, but I would spend my money elsewhere in the future. (1779 views)
 Tasted by TMethvin1 on 3/30/2019: Rated as a 3 (1624 views)
Tasted by Baron Slick on 3/19/2019 & rated 92 points: Tightly wound but I love the energy and youthful vitality here. A tannic backbone frames racy notes of blackberries, currants, and cassis. Graphite, menthol, and spices add a savory dimension that lends depth, structure, and complexity to the entire package. Delicious with a two hour decant but it will be even better in another year or two. Well done. (1626 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
