Tasted by swade on 4/13/2022 & rated 93 points: Dark as a moonless night. Deals in black. Breathes up black olives and exotic spice elements. Lively blackberry juice, black licorice and black olive flavors. Balanced tannins, acids and a huge core of fruit. Drink now or for five years and don’t bet against eight. Exceptional American Syrah. 93 (1086 views)
Tasted by EMark on 12/10/2021: A very interesting wine. Red plum color, Forest floor, herbal aromas. A very subtle hit of dark fruit on the tip of the tongue, Then, there is noticeable salinity, The wine is only very lightly acidic, but the surpising sensation that I get suggest citrus zest. That seemed very unusual. Earthiness or herbalness under the rear palate, Very different from other examples from this vineyard, (1056 views)
Tasted by dclaggett on 9/3/2020 & rated 92 points: 3 year check in. 13.5% abv. Clear dark plum color, magenta rim. Northern Rhône nose - floral, smoky berries, vegetable garden. Med plus mouth, light acidic lift mid palate, ample tannins frame blue and black berry fruit, charred meat, pipe tobacco, good minerality, finishes quite dry not sweet. Ready to drink with short decant. (1713 views)
Tasted by blcarter3 on 8/23/2020: A fruit forward wine made from a cool climate site. Clearly picked a few weeks later than the Halcon wines. Defined by blackberry, blueberry, hints of lavender, white pepper and a bit of iron. The savory components are most pronounced on the finish: roast meats, bacon fat. (1677 views)
Tasted by KJD45$ on 2/3/2020 & rated 92 points: Nose of blackberry, metal, wet rock....
Big dark fruit of black and blueberry combo,
There’s a meatiness note with drying tannins to wrap the fruit coating your tongue..
It’s my last bottle but I would love to be able to try this in 5 years..
Very good QPR (1795 views)
Tasted by River Rat on 6/13/2019: This wine holds a special place for me personally as I foot tread the t-bin of the fruit that went into the whole cluster portion of the blend. Followed over several days. Black as night, nose of dry aged beef, blueberry, mushroom and sage.

Palate loaded with roasted meat, blackberry, bacon fat, dark chocolate, crushed rock and iron. Turns briny with touches of leather and graphite leading to a grippy finish. Juicy and ripe.

So many layers to this wine so much upside. (2083 views)
Tasted by RockyII on 3/21/2019 & rated 91 points: Pnp thru a powered aerator. Deep opaque purple. Nose of smoke, blackberries and beef jerky. Taste is similar but with cranberries, iron and a stone slate quality. High tannins give it a lot of dryness and chalkiness which pairs well with the meat and stone flavors. A touch sour on the finish. Nice wine but I don't get some of the 94+ ratings I see on here. (2388 views)
Tasted by bplant13 on 2/2/2019 & rated 94 points: Delicious! black fruits, cherry cola, vanilla, licorice. A ton of structure with big, but soften tannins and moderate acidity. I’ll save my last bottle for at least another year, but this could go another 5 and still be trending upwards. (1668 views)
Tasted by sonodoc on 5/5/2018 & rated 94 points: Lots of red and black fruit, very smooth, with soft tannins. An excellent value for the price! (2174 views)
Tasted by ageverett on 4/5/2018 & rated 94 points: Splash decant. Swirled around pretty vigorously to get it to open up.

This is some potent juice that needs air right now - but overall gets your attention with gamey syrah tones. Dark red and black fruit, black pepper, iron.

Hope I can forget about other bottles for a few years. (2534 views)
Tasted by Mtpisgah on 3/2/2018: We opened a 2015 Halcon last night, it is much better tonight.
Fabulous nose. The palate is still a little tart on the front end and fruit forward on the back. Good and the potential to be much better with a few more years. (1966 views)
Tasted by MD20/20 on 11/22/2017 & rated 95 points: Amazing Syrah! This paired so well with Japanese A5 Wagyu! Beat another big name Syrah and a few Cabs during an informal tasting. Looking forward to trying this with pork & fowl, but easy to drink on it's own. Can't wait to share this with friends. (2192 views)
Tasted by dclaggett on 10/18/2017 & rated 93 points: Lower alc than expected given the weight of this wine - 13.5%abv. Luminous dark purple in glass, long slow staining of tears. Nose gets stronger with more air/time in glass: dark berry, savory red wine reduction, cotton candy, bit of funk at end. Medium weight in mouth, acid there but not too much, dusty tannins. Palate of black fruit, Chinese barbecue, bacon fat, root beer. 30 sec finish. Quality juice, not overly extracted, shows deft touch of Mike Smith. (2400 views)
Tasted by Millennial Drinkers on 10/2/2015 & rated 93 points: Tasted at Envy Wines/Carter Cellars in Calistoga with India. Hosted by fellow berserker Brian and Mike Smith, very friendly and showed us around.
Appearance: Deep Purple and cloudy.
Nose: Lots of Candied fruit and perfume.
Taste/Palate: Can sense the acidity is building in the wine and very very furry so lots of tannins.
Opinion: I will buy this when it is released I think it has lot of potential. This was a pre barrel tasting. (2852 views)

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

Halcon Vineyard

Vineyard website

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson

North Coast

The North Coast American Viticultural Area (AVA) in California, covering more than three million acres, includes Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino and Lake counties, and portions of Marin and Solano counties. (see The Wine Institute for more information)
