Community Tasting Notes (average 90.6 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 46 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Francophile1 on 8/25/2023 & rated 91 points: Last tasted this vintage of this wine in 2019. Time in the cellar has been generous to this wine as it has improved. While this can age for another 5+ years, it has put on some weight and the tannin has softened to where it can be consumed now with a minimum of a 2 hour decant. While still primary, tertiary notes are starting to emerge but you have to look for them. There is a nice tension and persistent energy that unfolds on the palate. Spring Mtn wines have always proved to be long lived. (1135 views)
Tasted by OldHick95 on 8/11/2023 & rated 94 points: Cassis, stewed black cherry, mocha, and dried herb. Chalky tannins. Classic style, if a bit subdued at 10 years in. (997 views)
Tasted by BryonD on 6/21/2023 & rated 90 points: Rich deep plum color. Gorgeous nose of rich black cherry and cedar with a hint of dark chocolate. Rich mouth feel and the cherry and dark chocolate really stand out on the palate. Firm tannins tell me this could go a few more years. (1190 views)
Tasted by deadwax on 11/1/2022 & rated 93 points: Old school cab, cassis, dark cherry. Medium body. Still youthful in color. Tannins not yet fully resolved. Secondary notes just starting. If I had another I would wait until it is 15 years or more. (1616 views)
Tasted by libero on 9/16/2022 & rated 93 points: I enjoy wines from Spring Mountain district, and this is no exception. Great wine similar to the very expensive Cults Cabernet from Napa (1700 views)
Tasted by libero on 2/8/2022 & rated 93 points: By now, this well cellared 9 years old bottle is better than the delicious prior one. Resemble the famous Napa Cabernet Cult. (1874 views)
Tasted by Trolson on 8/15/2021 & rated 87 points: Disappointed. Hopefully improves with age. (2396 views)
Tasted by libero on 6/25/2021 & rated 92 points: This almost 8 years old bottle is dark red, dense, lots of spacious legs,. Aromas of smashed basil or cloves. Balanced and 25 seconds finishing. (2300 views)
Tasted by Jayarr on 5/31/2021 & rated 88 points: Nice but nothing special. Soft with a lot of sediment. Certainly not worth the money. (1867 views)
Tasted by Mattshank on 3/8/2021 & rated 91 points: 2 hour slow ox. Nose: Minerally and perfumed red fruits indicative of Spring Mountain. Palate: Soft tannins w/ perfumy red fruits (yum...love the Spring Mountain style). Finish is medium length and elegant. I applied very little air and in my view this is ready now. Drink up and enjoy. Not worth the $65-75 full fare but a steal at the $30 closeout price I paid. (2346 views)
Tasted by sdwineguru on 3/6/2021 & rated 91 points: Napa, Spring Mountain Vineyard 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon, $55 in 2020. Mid-dark garnet, brick edges; mint, cassis, herbaceous, smoke and cedar nose; mid-big body; tight tannins; long, semi-chewy hot (14.2 alc.) finish. w/beef. 16.5 UC Davis scale, 91 other scales. (1773 views)
Tasted by cavedivr on 2/5/2021 & rated 90 points: Great nose, but came across as overall flat on the palate. Not a whole lot happening, and a very short finish. Nice, but not great, wine. (1685 views)
Tasted by tundraline on 10/23/2020 & rated 85 points: Tight and needs to open up after uncorking. Initial notes of spice and cinnamon disappear within 45 minutes. Nose also starts out good but largely disappears within an hour. Thin and little depth. Overly astringent on the palate. Not interesting or complex, weak tannic finish. More like a $25 bottle of wine. Not an acceptable value for its price point. (2303 views)
Tasted by libero on 9/29/2020 & rated 92 points: As per my prior note (2408 views)
Tasted by libero on 9/16/2020 & rated 92 points: This 7 years old bottle is a Cabernet Sauvignon at its best. Not a cult cab, but pretty good. At opening strong aromas decaying overtime. It’s dark red and subtons of purple is vibrant, not opaque at all. At taste round with a very dry and long finishing. (2163 views)
Tasted by HandmadeHomemade on 3/2/2020: Drinking very primary, dusty fruit, full body, fruit acid is present, red and black fruits, oak, and dirt in the nose and mouth. Tannins are pretty harsh right now and the fruit acid struggles with this, who's to say what will win out in the future- my bet's on the tannin. (2927 views)
Tasted by Francophile1 on 4/12/2019 & rated 88 points: 88 pts today, 91+ pts with 5 more years in bottle. The nose and fruit concentration is on point, but the finish and tannins are austere and drying, even after a 90 minute decant. Earth and herbal tones are present. Hold. (4651 views)
Tasted by Trolson on 12/24/2018 & rated 90 points: Very good after two plus hours of decanting. And, I agree should she longer. (4263 views)
Tasted by BamaWiner on 4/8/2018 & rated 92 points: Drank as a vertical along with the 1993 and 2003 vintages with a dinner of beef tenderloin. Decanted for 4-5 hours tasting every hour or so. Wine was very tight early in and initially thought made big mistake to have opened. However, as the wine opened up over the 4-5 hours it was very good. Need to hold this one for another 4 or 5 years before trying again. (5035 views)
Tasted by Pluecht on 11/4/2017 & rated 92 points: Full body. Tight. Lay down for another 5 years. (4725 views)

Spring Mountain Vineyard

Producer website

Vineyard: Spring Mountain Vineyard is an 850-acre estate on the eastern slopes of Spring Mountain. Over 225 acres of the estate are planted to vine, representing 135 distinct hillside vineyard blocks with many soil types, exposures, and microclimates. Originally four individual 19th century Napa Valley vineyards, Miravalle, Alba, Chevalier and La Perla are now one vineyard producing estate bottled wines. A substantial portion of the vineyard is planted in densities of over 4,000 vines per acre. Because of the diverse and challenging terrain, the vines are trained to the ancient gobelet form. Growing primarily Bordeaux grape varieties, the vineyard yields distinctive mountain wines that consistently display concentration, elegance and longevity. The quintessential wine from the estate is Elivette.

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
