Community Tasting Notes (average 90.9 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 28 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by bookert on 5/2/2024 & rated 90 points: Closed on the nose but palate opened up over time. Very representative of the grape and region. (92 views)
Tasted by Sean Tay on 3/25/2024 & rated 93 points: Pronounced nose intensity with notes of fresh herb, green bell pepper, white flowers, apple. Medium+ acidity and medium finish. (245 views)
Tasted by Jeremy Holmes on 12/8/2023: Complex aromatics of smoky mineral, aniseed spice, preserved lemon and white peach. Dense and rich, but also linear. Has a steely backbone and great detail. Great drive and length. Seriously good now but oh so youthful. (676 views)
Tasted by The Vines That Bind on 11/25/2023 & rated 94 points: Absolutely brilliant. A glowing, reductive, flashy, wine. Impressive energy with great weight and development. This only improved and expanded over a few hours. Rich, dense, expansive palate with huge acid behind the rich ripe yellow fruit. Comparable to top Bâtard, these bottles were stunning. An oily texture. Cannot believe the power and drive here. Long electrifying finish. Wow, was not expecting that. Two bottles off the list! (558 views)

Gorgeous bottle, tasted blind, still young in colour and on the palate. (1006 views)
Tasted by acyso on 2/20/2023 & rated 90 points: Monday hangout at Domaine (Chicago, IL): Bottle no. 960 of 15927. Served double blind. Definitely a Burgundian sensibility to it, but I was working based on the assumption that this was chardonnay. The nose was somewhat neutral, and despite a slightly waxy palate, this had some pleasant acidity to balance out that waxy texture. The trouble I had was placing the commune -- just couldn't really figure out where this belonged. Maybe recognizing that this was aligoté would have made this easier. (1983 views)
Tasted by oxwombat on 2/3/2023 & rated 90 points: Opened at the POB Paulee in Hong Kong. Chilled, then P&P.

The third bottle of Aligoté on our table, and though it was good, it fell short in my opinion compared to the Ponsot and the Arnaud Ente. No other extensive notes taken, and a solid wine in its own right, but just wasn't quite as expressive, or as well balanced as the other two respectively.

Definitely a step down from the d'Auvenay Sous Chatelet as well, which is probably the greatest Aligoté there is. (1236 views)
Tasted by François1986 on 10/24/2022 & rated 90 points: Robe jaune citron d'intensité moyenne.

(1316 views)
Tasted by Pancreatitis on 10/17/2022: Green-tinged colourlessly pale.
Initially quite buttery and oily textured, evolves with air to seaside, halide infused saline, mineral nose, lime blossom.
Predominantly saline mineral palate with yuzu and a hint of barley. (1231 views)
Tasted by vetty on 6/8/2021 & rated 89 points: Simple wine. Light flavor intensity. not much going on in terms of flavor, just very neutral flavor. little bit creamy, and ok acidity. (2545 views)
Tasted by Pancreatitis on 12/11/2020: Unbelievable delicious wine that really defies any attempts at description other than to say on nose and palate a very lively, complex mineral wine with mossy, earthy, ? Lichen ? overtones, so delicious it disappears in an instant, making me remorseful I bought 2 bottles rather than 2 cases when I had the opportunity... classic Leroy hedonistic pleasure. Absolutely delicious. (2758 views)
Tasted by streethawk on 9/22/2020 & rated 86 points: I agree with other notes about the extremely reductive nose with lots of brettanomyces. It’s like opening a matchbox in a barnyard. I can’t really identify any fruit on the nose, or anything else for that matter. The palate has good acidity and nice body, but again, not much going on in terms of flavour. Ultimately this wine represents very poor value, and for the price you could easily find a significantly better premier cru white Burgundy (from a different producer, of course). (2910 views)
Tasted by The Guzz on 7/31/2020 & rated 90 points: A bit underwhelming. Simplistic and lacking real lift. Good volume but no real character. I preferred the PYCM aligote. (2893 views)
Tasted by LB88 on 2/17/2020 & rated 90 points: Fresh and quite linear but unexciting. (3423 views)
Tasted by B Paul on 9/15/2019: Similar to prior bottle. Another really good showing. Great aligote. (2562 views)
Tasted by acyso on 8/26/2019 & rated 85 points: Aligoté at Table, Donkey and Stick (Chicago, IL): The nose is reduced to a fault. The palate is much better -- great acidity and extract, a leaner texture that shows a pleasant crispness, and a finish that is almost chalky. Unfortunately, you have to get through the awful nose to get there. (2831 views)
Tasted by aquacongas on 8/23/2019 flawed bottle: corked (2042 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 8/3/2019 & rated 92 points: Regular dinner group (@ JvT): Beautiful bouquet with white fruits, some smoke, butter and caramel. On the palate full bodied, vanilla and beautiful acidity. The wine improves significantly with more air. 92+ (2341 views)
Tasted by TRough on 7/31/2019 & rated 92 points: Mineral, reduction, funk (1361 views)
Tasted by B Paul on 4/8/2019: Has just a bit of reduction on the nose, which is integrated wonderfully. There is also a textural, creamy lemon here somewhat reminiscent of a Raveneau. Deep, balanced and delicious. Absolutely fantastic. (1367 views)
Tasted by Jeremy Holmes on 10/27/2018: The perfect amount of smoky mineral reduction to the aroma. It has the most pure core of lemon fruit. It is incredibly intense and with air there's a little spice and some rockmelon too. It is textural and has great presence in the mouth, finishing with terrific cut and length. Outstanding white Burg. (1778 views)

Domaine Leroy

Producer website

Domaine Leroy is a negociant/wine producer based in the Côte de Nuits region of Burgundy. It makes a range of wines from Pinot Noir that comes from some of the most iconic vineyards in the world, including Le Chambertin, Musigny, Clos de Vougeot and Romanée-Saint-Vivant, and is second only to Domaine de la Romanée-Conti in terms of price and quality. Those wines made from estate grown fruit are sold under the Domaine Leroy label.

The domaine was founded by Francois Leroy, a wine merchant based in Auxey-Duresses, in 1868. It was expanded under his son Joseph and grandson Henri throughout the early 1900s, and in 1942, Henri Leroy was involved with the purchase of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti alongside Edmond Gaudin de Villaine. Leroy and Villaine saw massive potential in the plots and vines DRC already held and, rather than see the domaine split up among various proprietors, decided to buy it together.

In 1974, Henri's daughter Lalou Leroy took over this co-management of DRC alongside Aubert de Villaine; she had also inherited Maison Leroy from her father after his death in 1980. Leroy left Domaine de la Romanée-Conti in 1991 following a dispute with Villaine, and began to focus on her own domaine.

Domaine Leroy was expanded in 1988 with the purchase of estates in Vosne-Romanée and Gevrey-Chambertin, and with 21 hectares (52 acres) of vineyards, became a domaine. These holdings include plots in several grand cru sites in the Côte de Nuit, as well as in Corton, plots in eight premier cru vineyards, and vineyards that fall under both village and regional appellations. While most of Domaine Leroy's wines are red, there are a few white wines made from Chardonnay and Aligoté as well.

Lalou Bize-Leroy also owns and directs Domaine d'Auvenay.

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio
