Currants and smoky oak on the nose. Medium to full-bodied with soft tannins, toasted oak and spicy cassis. Medium-to-long finish. Wife loved it! Raised my score from my note on the first bottle. This really is a lovely Napa Valley cab done in a more restrained style. Galerie is a Jackson Family project and the founding winemaker, Laura Diaz Muñoz, previously worked as asst. winemaker some of their high-end properties like Cardinale, and Lokoya. Forest floor, cassis, clove on the palate, this is more of an old school style than a big Napa fruit bomber. It's an excellent food wine. The winemaker has changed from this vintage and I'm curious if the style has remained consistent across newer vintages. (672 views) | | Tasted by winespine on 4/24/2021 & rated 92 points: As Napa cabs go this is inexpensive, but punched above its weight. We decanted it and served with a beef based appetizer. It's more fruit forward than savoury, but not a fruit bomb at all. The tannins have softened and the oak is nicely integrated. It's in its drinking window, but could easily go another 5 years in the cellar. I only bought 2 bottles, and wish I'd bought more. Wonder if it is going through a phase and the fruit is hanging out in the background, letting the acidity, alcohol, and terroir lead the charge.
We gave this a decant for about 30 minutes and drank over a couple of hours. It drank its best towards the end of the bottle after hour 2-3. Hopefully it is just a phase and these will drink better in a year. Id decant this for a couple hours if drinking now, to avoid any unpleasantry. Otherwise, maybe wait a year or two? Pours deep purple in color with a great bouquet of cherries soaked in vanilla liquor (if there is such a thing). Really nice nose. Wine is still very youthful and would recommend decanting for an hour if you can.
Decently layered on the palate, dark berries, vanilla, some chocolate, probably some baking spices in there too. Wine seems better integrated than a couple years ago, but still has plenty of grip and a nice finish. Really nice and balanced wine.
Day two, much of the same and still recommend decanting for an hour.
That said, this should easily rest in the cellar for 5 years without any trouble. At the moment, though, the 2013 is less open and inviting than its younger sibling.
Dark purple in color, full in body, nose of sour cherry, cocoa powder, and warm gravel. Tastes of blueberry, raspberry, granite, and cedar, with a warm and lingering finish that carries dusty tannins. 15% alcohol. Give at least an hour decant. 100% Cabernet.
I think the Galerie wines are remarkable values in Napa at the $50 price point - intense, complex, and classy. I have no idea whether this is a Cardinale's "second" wine (made by the assistant winemaker to Carpenter from various sites under a K-J label), but this is awfully good. To be sure, the 2013 carries the inwardness and intensity of the vintage, but I suspect it will be better in another year or so. 92-93 for now. Opened and decanted. Upon first taste it was very shut down, 2 hours in it showed more character. Was best on day 2. Would recommend forgetting about it in the cellar for few years or give it a long decant.
It is a sophisticated wine that over delivers compared to its cost, but will be better in a few years. Medium plus nose shows blackberry, graphite, herbal tones, cassis, baking spice, espresso. Palate is big, complex, dark chocolate, black plum, cigar box, sage, blackberry, medium plus tannins of velvety composure, medium plus alcohol and long finish. Rich and dark nose with layers of cocoa, cassis, dark red berries, dark gravel, tobacco leaves and some dark floral notes. Tannic backbone (7.5/10) and medium plus to full bodied. Layers of black currants, bramble berries, spices, and a hint of eucalyptus or mint in the finish. Dark minerality in the long dry finish. Very young and will definitely improve with time. Gorgeous blackberry and cassis, rich but elegant, and deep aromas of violets, cinnamon, vanilla and coffee mixed with dark earthy/spice elements – a lovely combo. Study tannic backbone on this wine but the refreshing acidity keeps it feeling silky. The black currant and blackberry fruit is a big dense at this young age, but shows tons of flavor and lots of potential for further development. I already get a host of cinnamon, charcoal, rocky soil, espresso. A complex and pretty wine that has its best to come. Definitely a winner in this price range of Napa Cabs.
