Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 95.8 pts. and median of 97 pts. in 23 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by ex-sommelier on 12/30/2023: Give this plenty of air and it opens up to a very textural Syrah with loads of freshness; this is barely middle aged. Nose is smoky black fruits, black pepper, olive, oak spice. Palate is creamy and mineral, with an herbaceous, peppery finish. (1122 views)
Tasted by *Vine* on 12/26/2023: Quick note: opened this up for Xmas, enjoyed off the pop for about 2 hours or so before it was drained; although tasty and quite quaffable, this bottle was fairly unremarkable overall and actually a step down from a recent 2013 Mixed Blacks Weill a Way. Should add it was properly cellared since arrival, no noticeable flaws although the tannins were far more pronounced than any of the other Expositions, 2012 included. With 2 bottles remaining, we'll see what the future holds but given the secondary for these bottles, it's going to be tough to justify opening another bottle should the experience end up being similar.  Tasted by PasoWallaWill on 1/7/2022 & rated 95 points: Amazing, profound nose of smoke, bacon fat and black fruits. Dark and red fruits, green olive that fades with air, soft finish. I could just sniff it all night and get pleasure. (2666 views)
Tasted by rdf58 on 11/28/2021 & rated 95 points: Interesting cross section of views in the current TNs. I enjoyed this one immensely. Mootsie's flavor profile struck me as right on. More savory Provencal notes than California fruit but the fruit is there. Plenty mature for drinking now but age worthy. (2339 views)
Tasted by Mootsie on 11/25/2021 & rated 96 points: Needs a decant and even then, it still comes across young.
With that being said, this wine presents an intriguing mix of dark fruit and layered notes of pepper, tapenade, smoke and earth. Vibrant and balanced.
At the initial offering price, it’s a deal.
I would let these sit for another 3-5 years and check in again. These are 20+ year wines. (2324 views)
Tasted by MAXIMUM SATISFACTION on 9/22/2021 & rated 92 points: Purchased direct from Bedrock last year. Better than Exposition One but still very disjointed with tons of oak, exposed alcohol and not much structure. Yes it’s explosive/powerful but less Guigal and more 2000’s Parker. Still it’s a fun wine to try. Full bodied plus with extracted black/blue fruit, smoked meat, minerals and a ton of sweet vanilla. Texturally grainy upfront and watery on the finish. Drink over the next couple of years. All have a borderline finish funk on the nose that needs time to blow off. (2601 views)
Tasted by pakabear on 11/1/2019 & rated 94 points: Not as good as other bottles, not sure if something was wrong with this bottle. Black cherry, raspberry, blackberry, cinnamon, licorice, toasted meats, silky smooth palate. Medium tannins are prevalent at this time, didn’t have them as much on the earlier bottles, I’d probably wait 2-3 years to drink anymore. Still this is most excellent! (4885 views)
Tasted by Neras on 3/10/2019 & rated 100 points: Such an outstanding wine. Drank it right out of the bottle over 3 hours. Dark red with an explosive nose. Dark berries. Just inhale. Smooth on the palate with perfect balance. Nothing is out of place. I would say it is in its early drinking window now, but with plenty of years left. (3761 views)
Tasted by pakabear on 12/14/2018 & rated 97 points: Intense, cherry, strawberry, loads of chocolate and cocoa, roasted steak, white pepper, cinnamon, vanilla, amazing purity and silky profile. I love this wine! (3852 views)
Tasted by joraesque on 12/24/2017 & rated 96 points: A great crunchy and savory bouquet during the first hour which morphed into smoky dry meats thereafter as the palate impression became increasingly drier. Turned out to be an excellent pairing with jalapeno-duck hearts, and a flop with a chili pepper-tuna belly dish. Hold till 2019.

Tasted by Philly NQ King on 6/17/2017 & rated 98 points: The greatest young wine I've ever tasted. Was worried it wouldn't live up to the hype, but was absolutely singing after a quick 1 hour decant. Violets, perfume, Cuban cigar and asphalt...and a finish that sailed on for a full minute. Wow! (6793 views)
Tasted by Kim Gerner on 6/9/2017 & rated 98 points: WA 100 points US wines (14 wines) - Wine tasting dinner (Søllerød Kro): Medium Purple. Northern Rhone blend 92% Syrah and 8% Viognier. Too young. Dried fruit, smoky, herbal, cedar, vanilla. Long finish. Too young, not in balance yet but I see it as a coming extraordinary wine. This tasting's winner! (2352 views)
Tasted by pakabear on 5/3/2017 & rated 98 points: As usual this is a rock star, amazing balance, dark red and black fruits, vanilla, clove, chocolate, great concentration and purity, the length is 50+ seconds. This is great stuff. Drinks well now with 1-2 hours of air. (4793 views)
Tasted by pakabear on 2/19/2017 & rated 99 points: Still needs an hour or two to open up, but when it does, wow. Dark blue and black fruits, steak, dark chocolate milk, chocolate covered cherries, some background minerality and just perfect balance a velvety texture and well integrated tannins and acidity. This is truly and amazing wine. Morgan and the gang made something special here, and is better than wines 2X and 3X the price. Of course this is sold out and good luck trying to find it for 2X the original release. It's a shame this is the last year for these Exposition wines, all three years were special wines. Morgan said he'd make them again if he could but it's just not in the cards. Hopefully he will find other vineyard sources fore more experiment wines. (4963 views)
Tasted by Dave Mosko on 10/29/2016: Opened last night, enjoyed most of it. A little less open tonight. This wine is a behemoth. A little lighter in color than I expected. A grand aroma of a dark fruits, meat and herbs. Very earthy and old world in nature. Young and bright. It's very viscous on the palate almost like there is fruit pulp in the bottle. I want to say that it reminds me of a very young Chapoutier single vineyard hermitage. The density is remarkable and the acids carry the awesome dark berry and wood smoked grilled rare meat flavors on a long finish that lasts almost a minute. Not your typical Bedrock Syrah. I realize it's an experiment in "vinology". But I wish Morgan would continue producing this unique bottling as I find it extremely pleasurable. Selfish as that may sound. (5361 views)
Tasted by pakabear on 10/26/2016 & rated 98 points: Dark Cherry, Cocoa, Coffee, Silky Smooth, bright acidity on the finish, loads of black raspberry and beef bload. This has AMAZING balance, an incredible freshness and mouth-coating flavor and structure but drinks extremely well right now. This is better than last years example, it's incredible and I wish I had more. (4462 views)

2013 Bedrock Wine Co. Syrah Exposition Two Weill a Way Vineyard

2013 Weill Vineyard Syrah, Expositions 3-pack ($180)

Our third and final year of this experiment, as Syrah decline is unfortunately starting to ravage this wonderful vineyard. All sourced from the various aspects, clones, and blocks of Weill a Way Vineyard located at the mouth of Sonoma Valley, these wines are a love-letter to the LaLa wines (La Landonne, La Turque and La Mouline) of Guigal in Cote Rotie. Exposition One comes from clone 470 on a steep west facing hill, saw 100% whole-cluster, and is free of the perfumed shadings of Viognier. Exposition Two comes from clone 877 and was 50% destemmed and cofermented with 8% Viognier. Exposition Three saw scant whole-cluster inclusion, 16% Viognier, and is the most rounded and headily scented of the wines. Only 125 cases were made of each of these wines, and if last year was any indication, these will certainly be among the highest-demand wines we have released.

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson

Sonoma County

Mendocino County

Sonoma Valley

Sonoma County, California, is one of the most important winegrowing regions in the whole of the United States. Vines have been planted here since the 1850s and, apart from the inevitable hiatus brought about by Prohibition, the county's relationship with wine has been prolific and unbroken.

Viticulturally speaking, Sonoma County is divided into three distinct sections: Sonoma Valley, Northern Sonoma and Sonoma Coast. Each of these has its own AVA title and encompasses several sub-AVAs within its boundaries.
