Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 93.6 pts. and median of 94 pts. in 23 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Jeremy Holmes on 10/21/2023: Dense and concentrated, but open for business. No artifice, just pure blackberry fruit with violets, licorice and earth. Beautiful balance and proportion. Deep but unforced, powerful and light on its feet. A ripe wine but not overblown. Such great presence and length. Wonderful wine. (3105 views)
Tasted by acyso on 6/2/2023 & rated 90 points: Allemand Reynard survey (Chicago, IL): This was one of the whiffs tonight, though I am certain that it was a question of opening this at a very tough moment. The nose has plenty of dark fruit and comes off quite compelling, but the palate is where this really misses the mark, at least for right now. There's a hollowness there that doesn't really seem to match with the structure that this wine has. All that said, I'm not rushing to dump all my 2015 Reynard. I think this will be a fantastic wine when it finally gets around to it (as I had this on release and was quite impressed). It just might take another 15-20 years. (3744 views)
Tasted by Nanda on 6/2/2023: Reynard Dinner (Ada St.): This is in a weird spot right now. The nose was magical and wide-open for business with black fruit, florals, smoke and spice. But the palate was backwards and unintegrated. Give this 5+ years and perhaps it will enter an early peak drinking window. Mid 90s potential. (3663 views)
Tasted by fcxj on 2/3/2023 & rated 92 points: Quite refined Syrah with touch of reduction and expansive, balanced purple fruit palate. (3863 views)
Tasted by Cailles on 9/3/2022 & rated 92 points: No notes taken. Over the 3-4 hours we followed this it never fully opened up and unlocked the massive substance there is. The highlight was the structural frame with ultra fine tannins and a fine streak of acidity which kept the wine light and floating. Certainly a promising wine but it will need more time. Despite the hot vintage, the ripeness level are well in check. 92/93 today, potential is certainly there.

Decanting: At this early stage, this would need a hours of air to unfurl. (4819 views)
Tasted by sirpat00 on 9/2/2022 & rated 93 points: Tasted at Le Clarence in Paris. First impression showed a lot of depth with carbonated, coca cola-like notes, dark cherry and fig fruit. Deeply herbal with lavender and mint flavors. The palate was rather wild and not fully balanced. There was an attractive primary juiciness to it, but not overly complex and in my opinion not even close to the likes of Jamet or Gonon in this vintage. (3593 views)
Tasted by Jeremy Holmes on 6/26/2022: Very deep and dense with black fruit notes and some menthol. It has power with precision, with some light florals but has essentially shut down. Come back in 5 to 10 years. (3420 views)
Tasted by finediningnyc on 7/23/2021 & rated 94 points: Deep and dense showing dark fruit, black olive and fresh violets with massive concentration, saturating texture and a searing intensity. Tannins are pretty prevalent right now but this has all the substance and structure in this vintage to be a perfect bottle with sufficient age. After a 3 hour decant is when it really blossoms. One of many things I love about Allemand is similar to Comte Liger Belair in Burgundy, you can drink them on release in addition to holding to age. Special wines. (5143 views)
Tasted by hprphf on 6/11/2021 & rated 95 points: Thierry Allemand Tasting (Restaurant de Chine): Double decanted. Amazing elegance, minty, cherry, inky, beautiful purple fruit, woody, roasted meat, creamy vanilla. Super composed, ultra uniform tannins, great finesse. Forever finish. My personal favorite tonight. 94-95 (4477 views)
Impeccable! (4977 views)
Tasted by pbaek on 12/8/2020: Very young, of course, but I almost always find that Allemands wines can be enjoyable even when they are young. This is no exception, there is tremendous concentration and volume of fruit here, but also good lift and freshness. The fruit has som red tones, there’s a wild note underneath and one senses the rugged Cornas terroir. The tannins are marked but not hard, but they do need to mellow more. Great wine in the making, needs another 10 years in the cellar to show its true potential. (5196 views)
Tasted by Guns and Rosés on 9/25/2020 & rated 94 points: So good. Classic Northern Rhone. Very clean and pure. (4976 views)
Tasted by davidb18 on 5/24/2020 & rated 94 points: A precise wine. Seems well crafted, balanced and clean. No element is too dominant. The earthy characteristics of Rhone wine are present in a soft and subtle way. The tannins are noticeably present, but softened by fruit, minerals, spice and fragrance. A nice long finish ties it together with a hint of oak. I decanted the wine for over 2 hours. Many years of aging to go. Excellent. (4553 views)
Tasted by nadecesse on 1/5/2020 & rated 90 points: Sans note. 90-91+? (5601 views)
Tasted by dbkitc on 9/19/2019 & rated 98 points: (at Bistrot Paul Bert - Paris). Brilliant wine. One of the best of the year. Rich black raspberry fruit mixed with earth and hot rocks. The palate is enveloping and is coated with a fine tannin layer that suggests many years of evolution. Perfect balance but an infant. A future monument. (98+) (6100 views)
Tasted by clayfu on 7/29/2019: has all the fruit the 2015 Xavier Gerard LaLa has but in a brighter red fruit set. The wine is vibrant and clean. It’s absolutely shimmering with that bright red fruit. It has a beautiful tactile minerality and intensity of fruit. While the Gerard showed more of the tannic grip, the allemand was absolutely seamless as it flows into a long persistent finish. (6328 views)
Tasted by LWI on 6/9/2019 & rated 93 points: 60-års dag og blinsmaking: Blind. Blåbær, potet, røyk, krekling. Nærmest en tyggbar vin, eksplosjon av konsentrasjon som balanserer fint av syre og en del tannin, varer og varer. Kjempepotensiale. Tippet en Cote Rotie 2015 pga elegansen. (5445 views)
Tasted by acyso on 10/27/2018 & rated 95 points: Most of the 2015 Northern Rhones worth a damn, blind (Chicago, IL): Served single blind. How coincidental that the two Allemands ended up next to each other. Black fruit, with a bit of a black cherry ice cream note on the nose that implies delicious sweet fruit. The palate is really structured, with heaps of tannin and lots and lots of fruit. It's a svelte wine at the same time, with a silky texture and really lovely concentration. I had this pegged as the Balthazar Chaillot. Perhaps I didn't expect this wine to be quite so backward. (5634 views)
Tasted by Nanda on 10/27/2018 & rated 95 points: 2015 Northern Rhones Blind: Single blind. Randomly back-to-back with the Chaillot. Again a towering and intense nose that is boldly aromatic with classic Northern Rhone notes. The palate is simply stunning in its combination of power and grace. Hedonistically delicious now, but will be a real stunner in 10 years. Upside from here. (6150 views)
Tasted by Jeremy Holmes on 6/8/2018: All purple and black like a fresh bruise. It is super-concentrated and very tight. Fruits are black and you get some licorice, tar, liniment and earth too. For its sheer size it is not heavy, with substantial tannins being buried underneath the flesh. It is far too young but should unfurl into something special in a decade or two. (4556 views)
Tasted by clayfu on 5/20/2018: 15 Allemand Reynard is an absolute bruiser. All that purple violet minerally intensity that allemand is known for is hiding underneath a thick mass of structure and tannin. You can shake loose some of that exotic blue and purple fruit on the palate, you can feel the intensity lurking under the waves. Hold off for now or decant for a long long time. (4821 views)

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

Guide to the wines and appellations of the Northern Rhone Valley -

The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)

Regional History:
Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.
