Loiserberg

Facing south to southeast, this site boasts a crystalline rock soil (Gföhl Gneiss) with a very thin layer of humus that provides the vines with a poor substratum; this forces the roots to infiltrate deeply into the craggy subsoil in order to get the nutrients they need. The ingestion of nutrients leads to wines with a very distinctive and multilayered character and a deep fruitiness.
Loiserberg is the westernmost elevation in the direction of the Waldviertel, therefore it has a very special microclimate: While its sun-exposed terraces are pounded with extreme heat, the vines are also flooded with cold air from the harsher Waldviertel. This mixture of cold and hot air contributes strongly to the development of exotic aromas.
With such special soil conditions and microclimate, the varieties thriving here are: Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, Muskateller and Weißburgunder (Pinot Blanc). Source=www.jurtschitsch.com jht

Lower Austria Wine Region

Lower Austria isn't "southern" Austria, but rather northeastern. It derives its name from its downriver location on the Danube River, which flows from west to east.
