Community Tasting Notes (average 89 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 14 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by prasm on 6/10/2021 & rated 90 points: Consumed over 2 days (vacuvined and refrigerated), note from day 2. Appearance: Clear, medium lemon. Nose: Clean, medium+ intensity, aromas of canned pears, apple, butterscotch, and white flowers - acacia, with hints of ginger. Palate: Dry, medium+ acid, medium body, 14.3% abv, medium+ intensity with flavors of pears, red apple, and grapefruit with steel notes and a medium finish.

Overall a very good wine with excellent balance and intensity and good complexity and length. Still feels quite youthful as it continues its slow development - drink now or over next 3 years. (501 views)
Tasted by prasm on 8/1/2020 & rated 91 points: My previous note from 3/30/20 applies to this bottle - surprisingly delicious wine from Virginia. (576 views)
Tasted by prasm on 3/30/2020 & rated 91 points: Pop and pour, consumed over 3 hours. Nose: Medium-plus intensity, florals - white flowers, honeydew, lemon, and vanilla notes. Palate: Medium bodied, slightly creamy mouth-feel, tart lemon and ripe melon attack, good balance, canned pear notes appear in the back-end. Finish: Lengthy 45-60 seconds dominated by ripe melon, tart lemon, and fresh canned pears. This Shaps Petite Manseng is uniquely tasty, I highly recommend it if your looking for an alternative, but delicious, white. (614 views)
Tasted by Benj on 7/7/2019 & rated 91 points: Note is from memory since I drank this at least 2 or 3 months ago, but I recall this as having excellent concentration and balance, with good dried pineapple, lovely acidity and weight, and handling its alcohol very well. The best of the Virginia Petit Mansengs I have tried. (852 views)
Tasted by prasm on 2/20/2019 & rated 93 points: Consumed over 2 days (vacuvined), note from day 2. Nose: Medium-plus expressiveness, meyer lemon, pear, green apple, polished steel, almonds and subtle hints of licorice - complex and interesting. Palate: Medium-bodied, pear, honeydew melon and apple attack, slightly creamy mouth-feel, great balance - acid driven mid-palate lift melds with perfectly ripe pear, melon and green apple up-front flavors, minerals appear in the back-end adding to the flavor party and lingering through a 45-60 second finish.

This is unlike any white wine I've ever tasted. A mix between a Cote de Beaune Chardonnay and a Sancerre Sauvignon Blanc, absolutely wonderful - oh and it's from Virginia! (916 views)
Tasted by Dubbadevan on 12/1/2018 & rated 92 points: Extremely intriguing. Like a dry Sauternes meets a Carneros Chardonnay. Tangy concentrated pineapple and tropical flavors with nice sweetness balanced by incredible acidity resulting in a clean finish that leaves your mouth watering and wanting more. Relatively high alcohol (14.3) gives this wine a silky body. Elegant and refined this wine was perfect with roasted butternut squash soup followed by roasted chicken with herbs. One of the most interesting wines I’ve had in some time. (577 views)
Tasted by Kahnru12 on 1/3/2018 & rated 92 points: Sweet pear and apple on entry. Hint of creamy citrus, smooth mouth-feel, viscous without sweetness. Dry but not bitter. Finish is creamy & very long. Goes well with crab cakes; even holds up with some spicy food. (1010 views)
Tasted by KPB on 11/4/2017 & rated 91 points: I enjoyed this wine... an unusual varietal. Medium yellow, with a nose of plums and raspberry, waxy tones, hints of tropical fruit. Dry with ripe fruit and just hint of bitterness that works quite well here, good acidity, has a nicely structured palate, long finish. I would be happy to have this in my cellar. (1345 views)
Tasted by Tsliwinski on 9/4/2017 & rated 94 points: Floral but rich, oaked just correct amount. Sliky finish, great at end of a holiday weekend!!! (1061 views)
Tasted by MichaelTLauer on 6/11/2017 & rated 94 points: Unusual for a Petit Manseng this wine is not as sweet due to oaking (French Oak). I find it very refreshing and somewhat unusual with a clean and moderately dry finish. (1085 views)
Tasted by prasm on 5/4/2017 & rated 93 points: Purchased at the winery in October, 2016, popped and poured, consumed over 3 hours. Nose: Medium-plus expressiveness - very dynamic and ever changing showing green apple, pear, fresh cut grass, florals - gardenias, with hints of vanilla and licorice. Palate: Medium-full bodied, superb balance - sweet pear and green apple attack with a big acidic mid-palate kick, the fruit has great persistence balancing the big acid and persisting through the back-end. The finish is lengthy dominated by green apple, pear, minerals, and hints of licorice. By any standard this is a remarkably delicious wine. This is from Virginia? If you can get your hands on a bottle of this - DO IT. (988 views)

Michael Shaps

Producer website

Known for his innovation and winemaking expertise, Michael Shaps has established himself at the forefront of the modern Virginia wine industry. Producing wines under the Michael Shaps label and for several prestigious wineries throughout the state--one winning the Governor's Cup in 2017--his accolades and national recognition are beyond compare.
Unlike his peers, he also owns and manages a successful winery in Burgundy, France, where he studied and trained to be a winemaker in the early '90s. These wines, under the Maison Shaps label, are produced and bottled at Michael's winery in Meursault, and imported to the United States.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.
