Tasted by Francophile1 on 3/5/2024: Tuesday Night Blind Tasting (Bin 75): Starter wine served blind. I thought it was a N. Rhone due to the peppery & meaty finish but it did have a touch or orange rind that threw me off. Never thought we would be drinking Tempranillo from Spain. (462 views)
Tasted by ProfByron on 2/9/2024 & rated 89 points: Opulence. So soft and rich.

So much American oak but not quite to the coconut stage. Soft, even no oak tannins now.

A bit ridiculous. But then I guess it’s about being in the right mood, or general taste. Some people will love this.

Made for the US market?

14%, cork. (416 views)
Tasted by americanstorm on 8/10/2023 & rated 94 points: Needs about an hour to sing. Consistent with my last bottle. Cinnamon sugar and sweet spices on the nose, cranberry, spice, red fruits. Still somewhat tannic but in a good way. Great mouthfeel and long finish. 94--95
Would definitely buy again. No sign of age, you would never guess this is 19 years old. (892 views)
Tasted by Halfeel on 3/11/2023 & rated 94 points: Really nice here in 2023. No sediment, clean smooth and excellent with grilled lamb. One more bottle of the 2004 in the cellar. Will drink with something special and Spanish like a Paella Mixta. (1234 views)
Tasted by malbrecht on 11/17/2021 & rated 91 points: Dark fruit (blackberry, stewed plum, dark cherries) on the open, before transitioning to notes of vanilla, leather, fig, and chocolate. Nice balance with the tannins. Oak is still readily apparent. This still comes across as slightly fruit forward, though that is slowly fading. Nice acid on back end. 14% ABV. (2077 views)
Tasted by I10driver on 4/18/2021 & rated 94 points: Old world aroma with earth and oak and dark cherry. Flavor is good tannins, dry with dark fruit (dark cherry, blackberry,) light vanilla. Long nice finish. Still drinking well at 17 years. (2488 views)
Tasted by Schiffy on 3/13/2021 & rated 91 points: Despite a two hour decant, very tight black cherry fruit with hints of menthol, licorice and vanilla. Super structured and likely has another ten plus years of life. (2503 views)
Tasted by americanstorm on 5/30/2020 & rated 94 points: Beautiful nose of cranberry and cherry. Needed about 2.5 hours to really show well. Went from just being ok to outstanding. I would say this is just entering its prime drinking window. Smooth, complex with good fruit and nice finish. I would buy again and am happy I have another bottle. (3085 views)
Tasted by bobbylion on 5/13/2020 & rated 92 points: Just love it. Very similar to the 2010 904 I reviewed earlier. Has at least another 5 years. Reading the reviews here, there seems to be significant bottle variation. I too had a bottle rated 88 last year. This is absolutely to notch here. As Cali Cab this would be north of 100$...  Tasted by Thief on 4/25/2020 & rated 94 points: Luscious aromas of black cherry, vanilla, and subtle oak. Full bodied but with superfine tannins and incredible balance 16 years later. A real treat. (2112 views)
Tasted by Verb on 4/21/2020 & rated 92 points: dark red, ruby rim - restrained nose of black fruit (blackberries, cassis) with some undertones of chocolate and mocha - big body with fairly high but ripe tannins and acids predominating over fruit - 15-20 sec clean finish - a very good well-structured Ribera that nicely complements food - it will last many more years, but residual fruit may not be sufficient to outlast the substantial tannins (1814 views)
Tasted by streethawk on 12/26/2019 & rated 95 points: Showing very well right now but this has at least 10 more years of life in it. Solid effort! (2093 views)
Tasted by bobbylion on 8/27/2019 & rated 88 points: Disappointment. Not really an off bottle, boring. Just very regular rioja for my taste. Not worth the commotion here. May be slo oxing it for 6 hours destroyed the wine? Anyway I hope my other 2004-5 bottles are better. I have rarely been so far away from the last rating, but it is what it is... (2115 views)
Tasted by sdonahue on 8/21/2019 & rated 94 points: opened up beautifully after about 45 minutes but started quite tight (2081 views)
Tasted by vincemcd61 on 7/9/2019 & rated 94 points: Delicious wine!! Paired wonderfully with Spanish spaghetti with olives (2167 views)
Tasted by GaryHOhio on 3/24/2019 & rated 95 points: Used CORAVIN with aerator, excellent 100% Tempranillo, well balanced with great fruit, drinking very well right now but has more years left too (2637 views)
Tasted by vincemcd61 on 1/29/2019 & rated 94 points: Delicious wine had with arroz con pollo with risotto. Great pairing. Give at least 90 minutes to decant opened wonderfully (2114 views)
Tasted by 3daywinereview.com on 9/30/2018 & rated 87 points: Wine Dinner featuring Paella (Margaux's Table, White Bear Lake): Excited to try this but didn't show well tonight. Bright fruits and wood. Not the acidity the 2005 904 had. Maybe revisit this down the road. (2695 views)
Tasted by galewskj on 9/30/2018 & rated 88 points: Paella (Margaux's Table): 1 hour decant, was that a mistake. This just seemed alcoholic and kind of syrupy tonight. The nose had fresh berry and some vanilla. (2289 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 9/29/2018 & rated 88 points: Paella Night and the Aftermath (Margaux's Table, White Bear Lake, MN): Agree with the others. The nose is ok, black fruited, some vanilla, wood and peppery spice. The palate brings the same elements but the alcohol rears up here and clouds things. (2488 views)
Tasted by bobbylion on 9/6/2018 & rated 93 points: Everything is right about this - sweet, chocolaty wine. Very smooth and slight caramel/menthol notes. I will have it with grilled lamb and I think it is a perfect fit. Had it open vor less than 1 hr, so with lamb later it might even push 94... (1946 views)
Tasted by Mossrose on 7/8/2018 & rated 93 points: My wine of the night, served blind at a tasting of 12 wines with 10 experienced wine lovers, in an impressive flight of Tempranillo wines from the great 2004 vintage in Spain, one each from Ribero del Duero, Toro, and Rioja Alta. Superb balance of acid, tannin, and fruit. Beautifully aged, deliciously forward, open, smooth, and rich, with no astringency and a buoyant undertow of tannin. (180 views)
Tasted by Danielgbm on 6/15/2018 & rated 94 points: Decant 1hr. Wonderful aromas, oaky, elegant, silky tannins, round structure, cassis and vainilla hints, lasting long,, a great example of Ribera del Duero at its best (2145 views)
Tasted by danielbleier on 1/2/2018 & rated 93 points: This drank very well right out of the bottle, full and lush with blackberry, black currant, mocha, and coffee notes. Well worth the discounted price from WTSO a few years ago (3567 views)
Tasted by jeffclavier on 12/31/2017 & rated 88 points: Not bad, no structure and a strong alcoholic aftertaste. No way this bottle is a 92-pointer. Wishing other bottles will be better. (3460 views)

Tempranillo

Varietal character (Appellation America) | TAPAS: Tempranillo Advocates, Producers and Amigos Society

Tempranillo is the premium red wine grape variety from the Rioja and Ribera del Duero region in Spain. Tempranillo's aromas and flavors often combine elements of berryish fruit, herbaceousness, and an earthy-leathery minerality. Being low in acidity and sugar content, it is commonly blended with Carignan (Mazuela), Grenache (Garnacha), Graciano, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The varietal is at its best in top Riojas, where oak aging is employed to generate increased complexity and harmony. From the best sites, these wines can be remarkably concentrated with great aging potential. New wines from this region are darker, and more robust, with more dynamic primary fruit flavors than traditionally styled examples. These wines seem to reflect the influence of Spain's other key region for Tempranillo, Ribera del Duero. Regardless of style, Riojas tend to be medium bodied wines, with more acid than tannins. These wines generally feature Tempranillo blended with Garancha, Mazuelo, and Graciano. For these wines, there are three quality levels, which will appear on the label. Everyday drinking wines fall under the category of "Crianza", "Reserva" denotes more complex and concentrated wines, and "Gran Reserva" refers to the most intense wines, made only in the best years.

The same labeling scheme applies to wines from Ribera del Duero, which, like Rioja, is dominated by Tempranillo and shares similar blending grapes. Again, Ribera del Duero wines are generally darker and more powerful than the most traditional Riojas. These wines also generally see less oak treatment than Riojas. From Rioja, we like wines from Allende, Marqués de Cáceres, Montecillo, and Cune. In Ribera del Duero, consider Dominio de Pingus, Emilio Moro, Convento San Francisco, and Pesquera.
Pair older-style Rioja with simple meats like chicken, leg of lamb, and pork loin. However, the newer style of Rioja and Ribera del Duero works especially well with bolder meat dishes or an aged Spanish cheese like Manchego or Idiazabal.

Spain

Vinos de España - Wines of Spain (Instituto Español de Comercio Exterior) | Wikipedia
Wine Map on weinlagen-info

Spain is the third largest wine producing nation in the world, occupying the majority of the Iberian Peninsula with vast diversity in climate, culture, and of course, wine. From inky, dark reds of the [Priorat] to dry, white Finos from Andalusia, Spain can easily boast of elaborating a wide variety of notable styles. Within Spain there are currently 62 demarcated wine regions, of which a handful have gained international recognition: [Rioja], Priorat and [Ribera del Duero]. Yet these regions are only a small sample of the high quality wines Spain produces. Regions such as Cava, Penedes, Somontano, Galicia, Rueda and Jerez are only a few of the numerous regions worthy of exploration throughout Spain. Spain can also lay claim to having the most land under vine in the world, growing up to, by some accounts, 600 indigenous varietals of which Tempranillo is their most well known. Other popular varietals include [Garnacha], Bobal and Monastrell for reds and for whites; the infamous [sic] Palomino Fino grape which is used in the production of sherry wine, Pedro Ximenez in Montilla Morilles, Albarino used in the creation of the bright, effervescent wines of Galicia, and Verdejo in Rueda. - Source: - Catavino.net

Spain is not in the forefront of winemaking for its dessert wines, other than for its sweet wines from Sherry country including the highly revered Olorosos (when sweetened). But apart from Sherry Spain has a range of styles of dessert wines, ranging from the those made from the Pedro Ximenez grape primarily in Jerez and Montilla-Moriles) to luscious, red dessert wines made in the Mediterranean from the Garnacha (Grenache) grape. Some good Moscatels are made in Mallorca, Alicante and Navarre. The northwest corner of Spain, Galicia, with its bitter Atlantic climate, is even making dessert wines, called “Tostadillos” in the village of Ribadivia (similar to France’s “Vin de Paille”). The Canary Islands have made interesting dessert wines for centuries (they are mentioned by Shakespeare, for example) and in recent years the quality of winemaking has been improved and the Canary Islands wines are being better marketed now. The winemaking styles for “Vinos Dulces” are also diverse, from “Late Harvest” (Vendimia Tardía) to “Fortified Wines” (Fermentación Parcial). Based on in-spain.info.
